I don't think it would have made a huge difference. Anakin would have told Palpatine, and Palpatine would have planned accordingly. I think Palpatine knew that Anakin wouldn't be going.

Yeah, Sids still would have seduced Anakin to the Dark side. It just would have taken a little longer, but not enough to make a huge difference.

    I?m not so sure.

I think Sidious was counting on the Jedi sending someone other than Anakin to get GG.

Because the Jedi did this, it did allow Sidious the further means and opportunity to manipulate Anakin about the Jedi not trusting him, especially with Obi away.

But had the Jedi sent Anakin to do it, or even perhaps with Obi, Sidious wouldn?t have had that opportunity and GG would have most likely been killed or captured anyway, which would have ?ended? Sidious? war. Order 66 would have been hard to implement, while trying to portray the Jedi as traitors to the Republic.

The war was going to be over soon and Sidious? hand was about to be forced. He would have had no further reason to hold on to his seat as Supreme Chancellor. If Anakin had gone, I think this would have thrown a wrench in his plans.

Sidious would have sent Grievous a message telling him to get the ... out of there, then carried out plan B. It would have been a tad slower, but it would still happen.

    Perhaps DT,

    Just for fun:

Even if the Jedi had sent Anakin to destroy Grievous, I expect Sids would have implemented Order 66 shortly after his destruction. He would have found a way to tell the Senate that the Jedi had been sabotaging Republic assets in an attempt to gain power for themselves and take over, and therefore needed to be neutralized.

He could have spared Anakin, i.e., allowing him to leave Utapau, before instituting Order 66, noting that he had been left out of the plot against the Republic.
Which, of course, Anakin would have believed.

PALPATINE: You must sense what I have come to suspect . . . the Jedi Council want control of the Republic . . . they're planning to betray me.

I think things would have been very differnt, mostly because of the timing. Had Annie gone to kill Grevious with Obi then palps wouldnt have instituted order 66, not because he would have wanted to spare annie, but because at that point annie wouldn't have been 'on his side' yet. Grevious would have been killed Mace would have went to arrest palps, who would have either killed Mace or lost pwr. Now we all know palps would not have stepped down. So most likely he would have killed mace thus exposing himself. Annie adn all of the other jedi would have seen him for who he really is a sith and annie woudl not have joined him. especialy because palps has not yet told him that he could save Padme. Then the last thing would have been that by the time annie got back and delt with this somewhat padme would be going into labor. personaly i belive that he would have set all else aside for her, got her the best medical care possiable and they would have had the twins. And once the birth is over their is nothing left to drive him into palps trap.
    But thats just me.

In the film, Obi is on Utapau and Ani hears things in his head. He goes to Palpy's office.
If he had gone with Obi, after they beat GG, Ani could have told Obi about the messages in his head and Sids would have found it much harder to turn him. If Mace did overpower Sids (which I disagree with but am starting to have second thoughts on) then Sids would be dead, the Sith would be destroyed and the galaxy would be in peace. I think I just have a habit of underestimating Mace.

No, if it wasn't for the Padme thing, Anakin would never have bought that "Jedi taking over the Republic" crap. If he saw Order 66 going on around him before he made his choice I don't think he would've joined Palps at all.

Things would've turned out a lot differently. Palpatine needed to separate Anakin and Obi-Wan. Once Obi-Wan was gone, Palpatine was able to seduce him more freely. Once Obi-Wan defeated Grievous, the Jedi decided to arrest Palatine. Anakin gives in to his lust for power and fear of losing Padme and stops Mace from killing Palatine. Mace dies.

Had they switched places, Anakin would've defeated Grievous. Obi-Wan would've gone with Mace to arrest Palpatine. Anakin would've have been able to intervene. Then Mace and Obi-Wan would've destroyed Palpatine. Order 66 would've never happened. Anakin would've come home a hero. The Sith would be no more, so Anakin wouldn't have been tricked to the Dark Side.

Over time, who knows if Anakin would've converted, but it definitely was THE defining moment of his turn.

The thing is you have to look at what Obi-Wan going to Utapau does, it gets him away from Coruscant leaving Palpatine free-rein with Anakin.

If for some reason Anakin with him would have gone Sidious would have gone to Plan B. And he usually has a Plan B along with a Plan C, D, E, F and G.

Sidious was on no real time frame. If Anakin had been sent to Utapau, Palpatine could have told Greivous to leave made up a new location he was spotted and start sending Jedi all over the kriffing galaxy looking for him. It just so happened that the Council sent Obi-Wan (Anakin's leveraging system) and Yoda was off planet. It's highly doubtful that things would have gone as they did had the Posse been Mace, Yoda, Obi-Wan and Fisto.

I guess you are right, Palpatine is too smart to let Anakin do anything that woudl change the out come of things. We all know palps has been working on this plan for decades, can we all give him credit enough to acknowlege that he is enough of a genious not to let his plan hang on a single decision like who goes to Utapau? Palps it perhapse teh smartest man in Star Wars we must give him that. He saw Anakin, he wanted Anakin, he is going to get Anakin. Palps it too well palpatine to fail.

The result would have been the same. Anakin's choice to save Padme would have outweighted any other choices.

I think this is right on. Plan B might have been to make Anakin look bad by having Grievous get away or even repel the Clone Trooper attack since he would have known it was coming. The Jedi would have even less trust in Anakin and he finds himself in the same situation headed down the same path.

Wouldn't have made a difference IMO.
His fear of losing Padme would not have changed.
Also, he had already emotionally separated himself from Obi anyway
[not confiding in him etc] so the physical separation or not would
    have had no effect IMO.

I think it could have changed things. What if Obi-Wan had been at the fight? From both a beating Palpatine perspective and turning Anakin. Theoretically, by the time Obi-Wan and Anakin had returned, Yoda could have been there too.

I'm just jumping into the thread, so I apologize in advance for any points already covered.

If Anakin had been sent to Utapau with Ben, things would have turned out differently, in my opinion.

One possibility would be that Palpatine would have been killed by Mace in his office. This leads to a different problem. With the Chancellor dead, the Jedi could have been branded as assassins by the Senate, and I doubt the claim he was a Sith lord would stand up since he would not have been brought in to stand trial and SHOW to the Senate to indeed be a Sith. It would be the Jedi's word and the Senate would have probably reacted unkindly to the Jedi's actions to maintain order. They might have been seen as tyrants in the making, in that they would probably have to either dissolve the Senate or assume control of it, thus putting them in even further control of the Republic's army and resources. It would look seriously bad for them. Kill the leader, take the army, and go around the legislative branch in doing so? That's what dictators do, and surely many in the Senate would object to that, from the idealists who want free democracy to those who were complacent and supportive of the Chancellor's extended and somewhat suspicious terms in power. The Jedi might have been forced to make the Republic into an empire so as to maintain control and maybe even have a rebellion of their own rise up against them. This notion in mind, what would Anakin have done? He probably be angry at the idea of the one man whom he believed could save Padme was killed by the Jedi and turn against them, either going solo and turning to the Dark Side, effectively becoming a vigilante-form of Darth Vader, or taking up sides with those who oppose a new regime and becoming a leader, feeding his ego, making him a hero in the vein of Luke Skywalker, but with darker tendencies.

He'd probably end up fighting Ben in the end anyway as Kenobi would undoubtedly support the measures taken by the Jedi. He'd remain good, but Anakin's personal loss would contribute to the fight and he'd be on the verge of crossing to the Dark Side, if not already. Basically, it'd be a reversal of what we'd see in ANH, where Obi-wan would be fighting on behalf of an Empire, but good at heart, while a rebel with selfish intentions fights to take him down. The only difference here would be Kenobi ultimately killing Anakin since the Mustafar incident probably wouldn't happen, it'd be on a different planet (or even Coruscant) where Kenobi would have to get a clean kill on Anakin to ensure he's dead.

In this case, Padme would have given birth without any complications.

This leads to yet another fork in the road. Seeing this, one of two things might happen. Anakin would see the light of his ways, and stay true to the Force, working to a happy medium and ridding corruption in the Senate knowing his family is safe. But that probably wouldn't be the case since there'd probably be Palpatine sympathizers out there going after his wife and children, keeping him in doubt, thus he is in limbo, keeping him between light and dark. He would still be volatile, and if anything were to happen to his wife and/or children, he would cross the Dark Side, and thus making the Jedi Empire more like the Empire we know. That is if the Jedi let him, thus another divergence.

If he were to turn to the Dark Side and lash out at the people who wronged him, the Council would probably send a group of Jedi to take him down, undoubtedly Kenobi leading the entourage. They'd probably outnumber him since they'd have more Jedi to spare and a garrison of clones to go along for safe measure. Thus things would remain as they are, the Jedi keeping a totalitarian state until the threat subsides. The downside, as long as there is a totalitarian state, there will be a sect opposing it to institute change, so thus they'd be one for a LONG time, if not forever.

Then there's the OTHER side of the token, and a 'what if' Palpatine had survived the attack, killing the Jedi and Mace.

    At this

No! Anakin is who he is. It wouldn't matter where he was he made poor choices and couldn't control his emotions. Lucas could have put him anywhere and it wouldn't have stopped squat.

So, if Anakin were hunted down by Palpatine's forces, with Palps not knowing where Anakin was at the time, and Ani knowing that only the Chancellor, the man he thought he trusted, could be the only one to institute such an order, would still trust Palpatine enough to join him?
