This was in the novelization of ROTS and the screenplay too, Dooku says that Palpatine promised him amnesty and Palpatine says "I lied." in the screenplay, in the book Dooku says the same thing and Palpatine just says "A deal only if you agreed to let me go, not if you used me as bait to kill my friends." basically making Count Dooku look like a murderer by setting up Palpatine as bait to kill Anakin and Obi-Wan, Dooku was totally played for a fool by Palpatine and it is sad, the man was told that the Dark Lords of the Sith could bring balance to the force by using the dark side to bring about a positive chnage in the galaxy and then by creating an Empire to enforce the peace and maintain order, Dooku belived that Anakin would join the Sith and help establish order in the new Empire of man.

Its almost sad in the movie when Dooku is killed, although it isnt, however reading the book makes it sad because Dooku was doing what he thought was right and could probably have been reformed, the book makes him look like a helpless old man that had been outsmarted and played for a fool, an idealist not a bad person, its almost sad when Dooku dies but if he had begged then it would have been sad for me, but the fact that he gives up and accepts his fate makes Dooku seem dignified like he understands his role and place in the grand scheme of things, he doesnt like it but doesnt whine or complain about it, It does make Anakin look like a worthless ass though for not being a true jedi and murderering Dooku, that ruins Anakin IMHO, he should have been better than that pettyness.

No, I wouldn't feel sorry for him. He made his choice to reject the Jedi and join the Sith, he bears the responsibility of his own fate. He made his bed, let him lay in it.

Its explained the EU that Palpatine contacted Dooku after he left the Jedi Order and then revealed himself as Darth Sidious after a long and lengthy discussion about the galaxy and the jedi order and the senate and how corrupt everything had become, Palpatine told Dooku that the force could be brought into balance if the two of worked together to use the dark side of the force to bring about the correct changes, this where the Separitist Movement and the Clone Wars springs from, a plot to bring the Republic under the control of the Sith Lords who would control the galaxy and bring peace by force and keep it,safety and security as well as peace and justice, if Dooku joined Palpatine for noble reasons then he is a tragic character then and not a villian.

Dooku had a vision and tried to bring it about and it worked...until Palpatine screwed him over, Palpatine and Dooku being to very intelligent men that talked about the galaxy and its probelms might have even belived that they were doing the galaxy a favor anyway, even the ROTS Visual Dictionary says that "Palpatine does not consider himself to be evil but rather a savior, after the destruction of the jedi order he has no need to reveal his sith identity for he is now the beloved Emperor Palpatine who has restored peace to the galaxy.

Basically they thought that they were correct which is why they wanted to destroy the Jedi so badly, being their chief opponents of that goal.

I wouldn't have felt sorry for him, not because he was a Sith Lord, but because he was responsible for so much death on a galactic scale. It would have made his character more interesting though, showing that Sith were capable of being sniveling and cowardly, as well as just being "badasses" that fight multiple Jedi without hesitation. It would have been a nice scene, but I think the look on his face in the film says it all. It would have also made Anakin more dastardly, killing a pleading old man who was on his knees, with no hands.

    Mercy...

Former Jedi or not, a Sith Lord would never ask for it.
Lee was right to tell Lucas that Dooku needed to be silent.

If the Count had begged for mercy, Maul fans would have had a field-day with that.

I felt Anakin was wrong to execute him even without begging, so I probably would.

I didn't feel the least bit sorry for him. He was a monster - even during his death battle he had no qualms about killing Obi-Wan to please Sidious, just like what Anakin later became, only Dooku never went for redemption, so he had to go. Anakins anger as a Jedi was the kickest thing about him - made him different, so I didn't mind that he got angry and did away with the dude. The downfall was necessary so we would have hero-monster-hero in the chosen one, and Dooku was just a vehicle to help Anakin along that road. I did love Dooku's acting though, he did a great job of going from arrogant to desperate to frightened and disbeliving.

    Sure . . . why not?

Actually, I did feel sorry for him . . . especially at that moment when he realized how much Palpatine had used him.

I would have liked to have seen him make a final attack at Sidious like he did in the novel.

It would fit so nicely to the Count's graceful appearance - "Die from my farts you backstabbing, no good, double-crossing PUNK!"

In a sense I did feel sorry for him, for how pathetic and small he had become. We had always seen Dooku in control, powerful, and yet at his end we see he has no control over anything and that all he has worked towards will end in total failure; we see it was all a sham, Dooku was never in the loop, sidious had his plans and they were incompatable with Dooku. He finally realizes how completely used he was by sidious, as nothing more than a tool to turn Anakin and further his (sidious') own power. (as RamRed mentioned)

That should have played out. It was one of my favorite parts in the book. It show 2 things.

    1. Dooku wasn't all powerful and was basically on a leash.

    2. Sidious would stop and nothing to get what he wanted including getting rid of his own guys.

I think it would have been a great sceen to include.

If he begged, I'd still swing with the lightsaber, miss, then swing again and break his jaw with the hilt. Everybody's happy. Then I'd wonder if I was too soft.

Well if you were there to capture Dooku, and he begged, you're a jedi and supposed to feel compassion. Jedi's are not to attack unarmed foes, and Dooku was litterally unarmed. Palpataine says he's too dangerous to be kept alive, but thats obviously a lie. Dooku may have made his bed, but he realized he used the wrong sheets just before lieing in it. Everyone deserves a second chance, and if taken back Dooku could've been a strong ally for the jedi when they needed him most.

I would've followed the mandate, I would've showed compassion and taken him captive.

That "WTH?" look he gives Palp says it all. That instead of being the grand poobah reformer he thought himself to be, he's been nothing but a puppet for his boss.

First off Dooku had way too much pride to beg. Next nobody in their right mind feels to bad when a bad guy falls. Why? Well, I guess it's because people don't know if he's being honest or just trying to get out of a situation.

How could you have any sympathy for the guy after the 'Arena' incident on Geonosis? He couldn't have just blasted Padme and company, he wanted to see them eaten...which in my mind seems very sadistic.

    I can't answer this question.
When Vader raised his hand in protection after his pwnage by Luke - I genuinely felt sorry for him.
If Dooku did the same, then I might have felt sorry for him too.
He is just a man following orders.
I'm not trying to defend Dooku - he chose his own path, I get that - but he was ordered to kill Anakin, but failed.
And we also have to consider what might have happened if Anakin did spare Dooku's life.
Would Anakin's compassion rub off on himself?
Hm, most probably not - but the possibility is there, IMO.
So, I think this is an unanswerable question, simply because the situation wasn't arisen by Dooku, but by Palpatine...
