Imagine that Darth Maul simply Force Choked Obi-Wan Kenobi after pushing him into the pit and that Obi-Wan Kenobi fell down the pit to his death and Qui-Gon Jin had been stabbed in the chest again by Darth Maul as punishment, What would have happened next? We know that Anakin Skywalker still helped the Nabo Pilots to destroy the Trade Federations blockade ship and that the Galactic Republic quickly sent a ship to Naboo and arrested Nute Gungray who was in Padme's custody.

So would Darth Maul have just figured out that the Trade Federation had screwed everything up and contacted Darth Sidious and then been ordered to leave the planet because everything had happened the way that Darth Sidious/Senator Palpatine had wanted it to happen? Basically mission acomplished and Palpatine is now the Chancellor and still has Darth Maul as his apprentice and the Jedi Council would likely send Anakin back to Tatooine to re-enter his mothers custody, so then Palpatine would start training Darth Maul in the arts of Politics and Diplomacy and have Maul lead the Separitist Movement in secret? If Palpatine trained Darth Maul in leadership skills and politics then he could easily lead the Separitists and after 10 more years of Sith training Darth Maul would have been awesome in combat and probably a match for Mace Windu and Yoda, Maul and Sidious then proceed to lead the new Empire together though with obvious changes as opposed to Vader and Palpatine.

I think Maul with ten years of additional training would have destroyed any jedi knights he came across easily and been second only to Yoda and Palpatine, would have totally dominated the Separitists as well just by using fear.

I don't think Darth Maul would be too good at politics, that is, not in the way Palpatine is. I think Palpatine would teach him how to be manipulative and clever. But Maul would be a differant part of the plan, and trained accordingly. Palpatine's job was to bring the Sith into ruling power, Maul's purpose might have been to rule as Dark Lord after the Sith were firmly established and after Palpatine was dead. His tattoos were probably meant to intimidate, a perfect way to give him a psychological edge over one's future enemies. But yes, the Saga would have gone differant.

Maybe Luke and Leia would have never been born, or maybe in a weird twist, Maul might have taken an interest in Padme and taken her for a wife. Who knows?

Without Obi-Wan, Anakin would not have been trained, Padme would have probably been killed because of her opposition to the military creation act in AOTC, and the entire fate of the galaxy would have been changed. Sidious would have still become Emperor, but probably in a very different way. Maul would have remained his apprentice, unless someone else came along that was more promising.

Sidious could have still used Count Dooku to lead the Seperatists, but not train him as a Sith Lord; the fact that he was a former Jedi, had political connections, and was wealthy would have been enough. Nute Gunray worked directly under Sidious without ever becoming a Sith Lord, so Dooku could have done the same.

Sidious would have still become Chancellor in TPM, and would have orchestrated the Clone Wars one way or another. Order 66 would have gone down pretty much as planned. A Sith didn't necessarily have to lead the Temple attack. Luke and Leia would never have been born, the Rebellion would have most likely failed, and the galaxy would have been under the thumb of the Empire for a very long time.

Do we really know this? The TPM novel seems to imply otherwise.

I think Anakin would not have been trained as the Council deemed him too old. Plus he needed to have Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon convince the Council that he was special, and without their covincing, they would never accept him because of the fear and his attatchment to his mother.

The Council changed its mind after the Battle of Naboo.

    If Maul kills Obiwan:

-Anakin is still trained. Yoda and Mace can talk all they want about how don't want to bend Jedi rules, but when you get your hands on a boy dripping with over 20,000 midis per cell, you seriously can't refuse that.
-Anakin is trained by Mace Windu or Yoda. Recognizing that Anakin has serious issues, Mace or Yoda take over his apprenticeship.
-Darth Maul is Sidious's apprentice, but Sidious sets up Maul vs. Dooku when Dooku comes looking for him. Dooku destroys Maul and becomes Tyranus.

The above from me, imho, is fairly certain.
This is where the path goes either way:

Anakin becomes a model Jedi and the Republic lasts forever:

Under the guidence of either Mace Windu or Yoda, Anakin becomes the ulimate Jedi, overcoming his fear of loss and untapped hate and anger, and even though he cares for Padme, he understands a relationship isn't possible. He discover's Sidious's plot and reveals it to the Council. He assists in the arrest of Palpatine. (some how) Palpatine is removed from the picture, elections are held, the Republic gets a new Chancellor (Bail, I would hope) and a new golden age is ushered in. Meanwhile, Anakin gains the rank of Master, becomes a respected leader of the Order, sits on the Council, and when Mace and Yoda die, Anakin becomes GrandMaster of the Jedi Order. Anakin takes his time learning the ways of the Force and becomes as equally wise as powerful.

Anakin was going dark the minute he left Tatoonie:

Mace or Yoda simply become another Obiwan is watching over Anakin. They are unable or unaware of his dark tendencies. He marries Padme, though has to work harder to keep it a secret from Mace and Yoda. The clone wars continue the opportunity for Anakin to tap into his hate and anger. Palpatine's friendship allows him to manipulate him in secret, and Palpatine works twice as hard, because he knows Anakin's kicking it with some rigid Jedi. Palpatine reveals himself to Anakin and Anakin becomes Vader. While on Mustafar, Yoda and some no name Jedi decide to attack the Sith. Yoda loses to Palpatine and goes into hiding. The no name Jedi gets his ass completely handed to him and Vader takes Padme back to Coruscant. There, Padme gives birth. Sidious busts in and says the kids must go. Vader completely dicapitates his ass and takes control of the galaxy. Padme doesn't die and at first she is quite depressed on Coruscant. However, without the influence of Palpatine, Vader sinks in and out of the dark side, with Padme's influence, becoming a bit of a gray user of the Force. He raises the kids in such a manner. Vader's a more enlighted Emperor than Palpatine and does more good then bad, there is no death star. Eventually, Vader unlocks every secret of the Force and does stuff I can't even image. The Jedi Order as well as the Sith Order (in all but name) is finished. Vader and Padme rule the galaxy for a very long time.

If Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan had both been killed on Naboo, Anakin would not have been trained. The Council didn't want anything to do with him. Qui-Gon's dying wish and Obi-Wan's love for his master were the only things that got Anakin in the door. Yoda and Mace thought he might be the Chosen One, but he had been identified too late, was too old, and was filled with fear and anger. They wrote him off. It isn't until AOTC, ten year later, that Mace and Yoda start to come around. But even then, they have reservations about him.

    ^ I have to agree.

The other Jedi did not want Anakin to be trained at all. It was Qui-gon's wish for Anakin to be trained and because Obi-wan cared about Qui-gon he wanted to train Anakin and Obi-wan even told Yoda "I will train Anakin even without the approval of the council if I must" So Yoda knew that no matter what the council said he will train Anakin no matter what, but if Obi-wan was killed who would want to train Anakin? Every other Jedi knew that it was dangerous to train Anakin at the his age. Obi-wan was the reason Anakin was trained, so if there was no Obi-wan Anakin would never had been trained.

It was dangerous to assign him to a relatively inexperienced Jedi, in any event. The novel implies that Anakin's actions during the battle helped to change the Council's position.

Yoda did say that the council did agree that Obi-wan should train Anakin as a jedi, but at first Yoda did not agree but then when he knew that Obi-wan would train Anakin to a jedi no matter what he let Obi-wan train him.

    Yes. I concur.
With Jinn and Kenobi dead at the hands of a Sith Lord, 'Mr. Twenty-thousand' in their lap and an old prophecy lingering in the back of their minds... the boy gets a Master. No way they let the prodigy who wrecked the TF's control ship run around the galaxy unchecked, unmentored and undisciplined... they have a responsibility to the Republic, and the boy posed an entirely different threat if he were to be found by the Sith.

Had Anakin been raised like Maul, the galaxy wouldn't have stood a chance.

I may be mistaken but I seem to remember Yoda saying that the boy would be trained, but he didn't agree with Obi Wan taling him as his apprentice?

I figure that means if Obi was skewered by Maul, Anakin would have been trained anyway.

Yoda say's that the council agreed that Obi-wan could train Anakin but Yoda did not want him trained because he said he "feels grave danger in his training", So I think that Yoda did not want him trained at all.

I have to agree with everyone that says Anakin would have been trained anyway.

At the end of TPM, Yoda says "Agree with you, the Council does" implying that they met and had were willing to bend the rules. The only mistake was handing Anakin over to some one with one expierence.

Darth Maul's death was the will of the force. Kenobi needed to live to train Anakin as a Jedi so that one day the Chosen One could kill the Sith Master. Maul had to die

Since, IMO, Palpatine prettymuch created Anakin, even if the jedi didn't train him, Palpatine would have snatched up Anakin from whereever he was and trained him himself. He wouldn't give up on his creation.

Darth Maul's death was foreseen by the chancellor. Had Darth Maul been victorious, he would have been able to provide assistance to capture Padme.

There is also the possibility that if Darth Maul succeeds fast enough, the cloud of the dark side grows and Anakin does not get off the lucky shot which destroys the mother ship. Padme would also be captured by Darth Maul and the invasion would be a success. So if it was the will of the force that was helping Anakin, then Anakin may not even survive the battle (As I am typing this I am wondering if Qui-gon assisted Anakin just as Obi-Wan assisted Luke in ANH)

Palpatine needed the trade federation to lose, to delay their plans to allow time for the clone army to be created, to bring in more armies against the republic

Palpatine achieved his goals: elected chancellor and got Anakin off of Tattoine and under his personal guidance

Qui-Gon would have trained the Boy. He would obviously be a better teacher, and Anakin would probably NOT fall on the Dark side.
