Author's note: this is based on the song "I'm Not in Love" by 10 cc. Yes, it is an older song but it reminded me very much of Luke and Mara.

    I?m Not in Love

I'm not in love so don't forget it
It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because I call you up.
    Don't get me wrong
don't think you've got it made
    I'm not in love

Mara stared at the message with annoyance, a fierce scowl marring her attractive face. ?What can he want?? she said to herself.

She really wasn?t in the mood to deal with the earnest and sincere farmboy type right now. In fact, if given a choice, she would have preferred the company of a smuggler type, someone like her boss. Even Han Solo would have been less annoying than the man who tried to haunt her thoughts. He didn?t haunt her thoughts, of course, he only tried to.

She sighed as she considered that Luke Skywalker probably didn?t even know the way his blue eyes made her feel just a trifle breathless. It was also likely he had no clue that his smile made her stomach lurch within her. And he most definitely did not realize that she found herself wondering what his hands would feel like if he used them to bring her face closer to his so that their lips- She stopped herself and groaned.

She closed her eyes and tried very hard to bury the image of Luke Skywalker under mundane thoughts of shipping manifests, important memos, and even a list of holovids she has seen in the past year (a distressingly short list and thus of little distractive value). Luke, however, was apparently not in a cooperative mood and his boyishly handsome face would push its way to the surface of her thoughts yet again.

She finally gave up trying to hide from the farmboy by concentrating on the minutiae of her very dull and lonely life. If he had been here in her quarters, instead of present just in the electronic message that currently blinked on her console, she would have relieved some of her tension by blistering his ears with a few well chosen and pointed remarks. Either that or she?d kiss him until neither of them could breathe and see if his lips really lived up to the promises they seemed to offer.

She should just ignore his message. Perhaps if she did so long enough he would forget or would get annoyed enough to stop sending her messages. Yes, if she was smart she would ignore it. Obviously she wasn?t as smart as she hoped.

I like to see you but then again
That doesn't mean you mean that much to me
So if I call you don't make a fuss
Don't tell your friends about the two of us
    I'm not in love.

As soon as he punched the ?send? key he felt an almost irresistible urge to kick himself very hard. What had he been thinking? That was the problem, of course, he hadn?t been thinking. Once more he had let his feelings dictate his actions and yet again had put himself into a place he didn?t want to be.

He had come home tonight, restless after yet another feeble attempt to enjoy an evening out. But as had happened so many times before, he found himself looking across a small table at a woman who didn?t really see him. She saw Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master and hero of the New Republic. She saw the mysterious figure who had gained fame by defeating the evil Emperor and his henchman, Darth Vader.

She didn?t see a man who sometimes still woke up at night in a cold sweat, having dreamed he was being pursued by a shadow accompanied by the harsh sound of a respirator and heavy treading footsteps. What she was blind to was the man who still deeply felt his failure to protect his sister?s children. The one who endured the burden of recreating the Jedi Order and had found it to be almost unbearably heavy and lonely; that man was invisible.

That man she didn?t see, nor did she want to see him.

She saw who she wanted to see as she memorized every word he said, every gesture he made, so that she could share every moment of their time together with her very curious and envious friends the next morning. An hour into thei

LOL. that's our Mara! One extreme or the other, never in between. How I love her! This is great characterization. You've done Mara wonderfully!

He didn?t want to face the fact that Mara was the only person, outside of his family or those he had fought beside during the Rebellion, who still looked at him like he was just Luke. To her he was Luke, not some interesting phenomenon of nature who had bizarre powers. And the best part of it all was that she knew the truth, the horrible damning truth, and could look him in the eyes anyway.

And Luke, too! I love that side of him, and I love the way you worded it, and I just love this whole paragraph! Beautifully done, perfectly in how you've shown Luke. *bright smile*

She had agreed to meet him; surely only out of curiosity. That?s all it could possibly be, right? And it was only for caf, innocent and platonic enough. For Force sake, they were more acquaintances than friends; more reconciled enemies than anything else.

But as she fell asleep she dreamed of a rich blue sky that was exactly the color of Luke?s eyes.

She had said yes! He wasn?t sure whether to be thrilled or make sure his lightsaber was in prime working condition. One could never predict Mara. His heart vacillated between a desperate, uncertain hope and a biting dread.

He fell asleep and dreamed of sitting in front of a fire that kissed at his cheeks, the silken touch of it remarkably like Mara?s hair.

I love it! This whole story is wonderful! I hope to see more Luke and Mara from you, because this is just gorgeous!

Me likes...how each of them are thinking of the other...how Mara's annoyed at how Luke makes her feel, and how Luke is refreshed by how Mara makes him feel.

Oh nicely done! I love Luke and Mara stuff, especially before they admit their feelings for each other. They're so cute as they deny, deny, deny!

She didn?t see a man who sometimes still woke up at night in a cold sweat, having dreamed he was being pursued by a shadow accompanied by the harsh sound of a respirator and heavy treading footsteps. Loved that, although it was sad in a way, too. Luke really wants someone that loves him for who he is, not what he's done. Great work! I've seen two song fics by you, good work on both. Are song fics your speciality? :D

I have to say I'm not a HUGE fan of songfics but this one was really good. It was more of a vignette with a tie in to a song, and well written. Good work.

I really, really like! You made a fascinating play of tension between how unique Mara and Luke are and the sometimes mundane details of their life (shipping manifests! dates!) And they were so cute - trying to deny their feelings.

EmilieDarklighter Thanks so much! I'm glad you think I did a good job with them. They are one of my favorite SW couples!

Abby Thank you! I wanted to show two people thinking about each other with a little bit different reaction in each one. :D

Suzuki_Akira Thank you so much! I wanted to get the characterization right and I'm glad to know it worked. Plus, I've always liked getting A's!

VaderLVR64 I've always thought there was a core of sadness in Luke, how could there not be? Thanks so much for your kind words.

Jedi-2B Wow! Thanks so much! It means a lot to me as I admire your work so much.

CapNJaxWench Well I'm glad you stopped in to give this one a shot! Thanks so much!

isola Thanks! And life is more about the mundane stuff anyway, so I wanted to bring that out. Thanks so much for reading!

Starfighter5 Yeah, I heard the song on an oldies station and I thought it fit them too! Thanks!

Jedi_Trace Wow! So glad I could make your day a little better!

Good Luke & Mara interaction! As smart as these two are you'd think they would figure it out a lot sooner, wouldn't you? Great viggie showing their emotions, as varied as they are.

She had said yes! He wasn?t sure whether to be thrilled or make sure his lightsaber was in prime working condition. One could never predict Mara. His heart vacillated between a desperate, uncertain hope and a biting dread.

Great ending. Mara keeps Luke on his toes, doesn't she?

He didn?t want to remember the comfortable ease of just talking to her. He chose to forget how the sound of her laughter made him smile simply because it was so beautiful and so rare, and thus to be treasured.

Liked this one, it was good. You did a great job with Luke and Mara.

That was a wonderful portrayal of Luke and Mara, at the stage where they still don't want to admit that there's anything between them.

I really did feel sorry for Luke. It would be tough for him to feel so isolated, and of course he would long for someone who would love him for himself.

Really liked this! I liked the contrast between the emotions being felt by Luke and Mara. Great work, I hope I see more from you around here.

Wonderrful songfic! I love anything pertaining to Luke and Mara, and you characterized the two of them perfectly.

She sighed as she considered that Luke Skywalker probably didn?t even know the way his blue eyes made her feel just a trifle breathless. It was also likely he had no clue that his smile made her stomach lurch within her. And he most definitely did not realize that she found herself wondering what his hands would feel like if he used them to bring her face closer to his so that their lips-. She stopped herself and groaned. AWW!!! [face_love] It's so sweet, the way she decieves herself into thinking that she doesn't love Luke at all, but constantly thinks about him.

And the best part of it all was that she knew the truth, the horrible damning truth, and could look him in the eyes anyway. Beautiful line. It shows his slight desperation, and yet his love for her. (Even if he doesn't quite know it yet.)

Are you going to continue this or make a sequel? Please? I'd love to see what happens on their little date. [face_love]

I felt sorry for Luke. To be so well known and not known at all.

    Will there be more?
