This story takes place about 25,000 years before TPM, and is not long after the founding of the Jedi Order. The story covers about 100 years or so. It contains mostly original characters, a few I pulled from various history readings I researched that seemed would work in this story. I'm Posting a short beginning to get the story started. Hopefully it will take shape and be what I envisioned.

Imbalance: The Beginning of the Sith

The Force. It wasn't that long ago that this mystical energy field was virtually unknown. Now there were about 150 Jedi studying the ways of the Force and the number would grow as they became Masters and started teaching more.

The founder of the Jedi Order, Kaja Sinis, had just been killed by a bounty hunter leaving his former student, now Jedi Master Shintor Beerus, in charge of the new order. Only Beerus knew of a secret the Sinus had told him. A secret of the future. It would remain safe in his Lekuu. Beerus was a Twi'lek. The Lekuu held the deepest memories of the Twi'lek. It would be safe there from anyone.

Beerus sat in chair in the meditation chamber and contemplated all that happened over the past 100 years. He started training as Sinis's first apprentice only 75 years before. Now he was a Jedi Master. The Force was still somewhat new to him, but he had grown comfortable listening to it's guidance and trusting it in the few combat situations he had been in.

He was there when Sinis created the first lightsaber, though it was an awkward weapon with the power pack that had to be carried around to power it. The premise of the weapon was remarkable. A beam of light that could penetrate anything except another lightsaber. If only there was a way to power it from within, it would be a much better weapon. His hand reached down and touched the hilt of his own lightsaber. He thumbed it on and the green blade extended with a Snap-Hiss. The hum of the blade reminding him of the power this weapon held. A smile crossed his face as he deactivated the blade. How wise his Master was to come up with this idea!

His thoughts dwelled on his Master for a few minutes longer as they turned to his death. As he dwelt on the death of his Master, he felt something he hadn't felt before. There was a strange prompting of the Force that seemed to feed off of the anger and regret he felt. It wasn't a pleasant feeling and he shook himself from his thoughts. There was a darkness to the feeling. He would have to come back and explore this later. There was a meeting of the brand new Jedi Council he had to get to.

As the number of Jedi grew, it became too much for him to handle on his own. He decided to pick 11 other Jedi that were wise and powerful to help him govern the new order and bring it guidance. He wondered if he should tell them of the darkenss he had just encountered, but decided he knew too little yet. He would wait until he discovered more.

Thanks. I am new to the fan fic writing, but not to reading. I've read JW Titus' version of Episode III and currently reading his Sith Wars story.

Thank you for the comments. Here comes the next part. It is my intention that a couple of these characters are ancestors of characters we know. You'll figure them out.

The rest of the newly formed council was already in the meeting hall when Shintor arrived.

"Greetings Master Beerus." They all said.

The council was made up of a total of 12 Jedi Masters. Jedi Master Kantor was a Civian like Kaja was, though from the Civian homeworld of Civia. Civians were humanoid creatures that were about 2 feet taller than most humans, and wore their hair long. Master Hado was a weird creature. He was a Whill, a short green creature that looked like a overgrown frog. He was a very wise Master. Shintor had decided to leave him in charge of the council if anything would happen to him. Master Skoles was from Mon Calamari. She had a large head with large eyes as well as webbed hands and feet, but she was very good with a lightsaber. Master Rey'lya was a Bothan. His short, furry body barely covered the chair he sat on, but he was very skilled in the Force. There were three humans on the council, Masters Darma Jarvis, Gram Solo and Aenon Jurtis. Master Jurtis was the most powerful Jedi on the council. His great skills surprised Kaja when they met. The remaining four Masters were all Kashi Mer. Masters Zerdok, Kalfar, Zooti Frugan and Xendor. The Kashi Mer were known for their persuasiveness and charisma. They were as tall as the Civians, but were very muscular and had sharp teeth that they liked to show off when threatened.

"Greetings to you as well." Shintor replied. "I trust all is well with everyone." They all nodded.

"I believe the training of Jedi is going quite well. Current estimates are that each of the Jedi Masters have two to five apprentices." Kantor said.

"Very good." Shintor responded. "Our numbers continue to grow. Is there any news on anyone learning something new that know one knew before?"

"Hmmmmm, answer your own question I believe you can." Hado replied. "Hiding something you are. Sense it I can."

"I was hoping to meditate more and know more before I gave a report."

    "Very well then." Hado responded.

Aenon spoke up. "I discovered that the Force can be used to protect you in a new way. I was walking in a valley the other day and there was a rockfall. I thust out my hands instincively and the rocks stopped. I knew that if I let my hands down that the rocks would fall on me so I thought that if I could stop them, maybe I could move them. Sure enough, I moved my hands to the side and with the Force moved to rocks off to the side where they would fall behind me. I've tried this with other things and had the result of being able to move them."

"That could be useful in the future. You'll have to teach us this skill." Rey'lya said.

"It seems that in my mediations, the Force has been showing me more ways to block and parry with my lightsaber." Xendor said. Other members voiced their agreement.

"If there is no other business, then this meeting is adjourned." Shintor said. "Hado, could you remain behind?"

"I can." He replied as the rest of the council filed out.

"You sensed I was hiding something. I was. In the event anything happens to me, I would like you to take charge of the Jedi Council. You are much wiser than I am, or anyone else here. I would turn it over to you now, but Kaja's wish was that I would lead the Jedi."

"Honored I would be, to lead the Jedi. But, this you were not hiding. Something else it is."

"Yes. I was thinking about Kaja before the meeting, about his death. I felt anger and sadness. Then I felt something else. The Force was almost feeding off of my anger. It felt dark and uncomfortable."

"Hmmmmm. New this is. Right you were to keep this from the others until more about this you know. Meditate on this I will as well."

"Agreed. I will see you later." Shintor replied.

"May the Force be with you." Hado said.

"And with you." Shintor responded as he went back to his home. He hope

    Here comes the next part.

Each of the other council members felt the disturbance in the Force and each rushed to their personal meditation spot to find answers. Strange how it started with the darkness then went to pain, and the abruptly ended.

As Xendor searched for answers, he got the feeling that this meant someone with some Force ability was in pain and then died. But what about the darkness. As he dwelt on his brother in the Force being killed, he realized the darkness did it. How could that be though? The Jedi were only beginning to understand their power and didn't know of any power to kill. Frustration grew within him and anger that someone could kill this brother in the Force. Suddenly he felt strength surging through him and a beckoning for more anger. He gave more and the strength grew and he felt a darkness coming around him, but all he could think about was the power he felt, and the desire for more. The darkness promised unlimited power if he would give him all of his anger, fear, and frustration. As Xendor continued to fuel this new power, he sensed other Jedi were exploring this power.

Master Beerus was stunned at the power that the darkness held, but at a price. He saw what this power would do to a person. It would rob them of all compassion and love. They would become a power hungry monster continually wanting more and more power. This could be very dangerous.

Master Hado likewise found the same danger in giving in to the darkness.

One by one the council members pulled back from the darkness and it's power except for 5. Xendor, Kalfar, Zerdok, Zooti, and Kantor. They wanted to learn more about this power.

Master Hado sent a hologram to everyone to gather at the meeting hall for an emergency meeting at 7 that night. As they each made their way back, they all felt the presence of darkness that was there to stay. Danger was at hand unless the darkness could be dispelled.

As they gathered, concern was noted on many faces. None had greater concern than Masters Hado and Beerus. They saw what would happen if this darkness were allowed. They saw the havoc that would be wrought, the suffering and pain of many.

Master Hado started the meeting. "Sensed we have, a great power and darkness of the Force."

Everyone nodded to indicate he was right.

Master Zooti spoke up, "It is my opinion that we should study this darkness and see what it has to offer. We are, after all, studying to learn all about the Force and this is something new that we didn't know before."

"I agree with Master Zooti." Master Xendor replied. "We cannot really be fully aware of the Force if we do not study this darkness." Masters Kantor, Zerdok, and Kalfar nodded their agreement.

"In grave danger I feel we will be, if allowed this study is." Hado said.

"The price is too high." Master Beerus added. "The more you give in to this darkness, the more it wants, until it owns you. Pain and suffering will be the result as more and more power is sought after."

"The wisdom of these Masters is right." Rey'lya said. "I too sensed danger from the darkness." Masters Jarvis, Jurtis, Solo, and Skoles nodded.

    "Vote we must." Hado said.

One by one they cast their vote on the matter, and it came out 5-7 in opposition of studying the darkness.

"This is proposterous!" Xendor said. "How can we truly know the Force if we do not explore all aspects of it?" Frustration rose in him. The darkness began to beckon.

"A correlation I see beginning to form." Hado said. "With anger and aggression, the darkness comes. Calm we must be if this darkness we want gone."

Xendor reigned in his feelings. There would be another time to study the darkness, but he could not let anyone know, except those who were with him in his vote.

"The study of the darkness is hereby banned." Master Beerus said. "Anyone found practicing this darkness will be banned from the Jedi Order." Those who voted to ban the study nodded in agreement. The rest just bowed their heads in respect.

Xendor resolved that he and the other 4 would study this darkness and incorporate it with the knowledge of the light. Then they would use it to overthrow the current council and set up a new council that would really be after the full knowledge of the Force. He decided that after this meeting he would gather with the others and start planning how to go about this secret study.

It became clear as the rest of the council filed out of the meeting hall that the other 4 had the same idea. Xendor signaled them to come closer.

"It is clear to me that the council does not wish to gain the full knowledge of the Force. Banning the study of this darkness is outrageous. I want to start studying this in secret with you and begin to pass this on to others. We can then overthrow the council and set ourselves up and show everyone the true nature of the Force." He said in his gravely, whisper of a voice.

"I agree," said Zooti. "But how will we do this without the rest of the council finding out about it?"

"I'm sure the darkness will provide a way if we start gradually. Once we find a way to shield our thoughts and feelings, then we can fully study it without the risk of discovery."

Zerdok, Kalfar, and Kantor nodded in agreement.

"If we fail at overthrowing them, you know they will ban us from the Jedi order and send us away," Kantor said.

"That is a risk I am willing to take. At least we can then start spreading the teachings we know to others outside of the order. There must be others sensitive to the Force that we haven't discovered that are beyond our territory now. The Jedi need to continue to grow in number and gain the confidence of the Republic if we wish to become a part of it." Xendor was quiet for a moment and then added, "I will let nothing and no one stop me from gaining the power that I felt with this darkness. If I must kill to keep it I will."

The others showed the same resolve on their faces. They were quickly snapped back to reality when Shintor came back in.

"I sense some frustration in here. What is going on?"

Kalfar spoke, "We mean no disrespect Master, but why does the council not wish to fully understand the Force. Wasn't that what Master Kaja set out to do in the first place? What would he think if he were here now and saw what is going on?"

Anger flared in Shintor. "Don't you think I've considered what he would think?" He yelled out. "Nobody cares more for his legacy than I do. Don't you EVER disrespect him again." As he bit out the last sentance he pictured in his mind shoving Kalfar. As he did so, Kalfar went flying back about 10 feet.

Shock was on everyone's face as they saw what had just happened. Shintor fell to his knees.

"Please forgive me Master Kalfar. That was out of line and I honestly don't know how that happened, but I do know that this darkness was involved. This is why we do not wish to study the darkness. It takes control of you. It will continue to take control and want more and more of you. Master Hado has seen this as well. Ruin will come to you if you follow after it. Kaja wanted to study the Force yes, but when he started to discover what could be done, he wanted it to be used for the common good. I don't believe he would have approved of this. That being said, the council voted against it."

Kalfar rejoined the group and bowed his head to Shintor. "I understand that you weren't in control. Thank you for your wisdom." He bowed. The others followed suit, sensing vaguely through the darkness that he was deceiving Shintor to get rid of him.

Shintor returned their bows and left.

"Did you feel the raw power of that push?" They all said at once.

"Everyone meet me in the forest tomorrow morning and we will begin our quest for this darkness. Now more than before I want this power." The others agreed to meet and set off for their dwellings, the darkness had found a home in their souls now and began already to show them things to come, and new abilities.

Morning came and the group of Xendor, Zerdok, Kalfar, Zooti, and Kantor met in the forest as planned. Over the course of the evening before the darkness had shown them how to mask their feelings and power. It didn't want the others to know of their secret and keep the darkness from spreading and growing in power.

They each sat down on the forest floor in a circle and began to meditate and search for the darkness, but it eluded them. Frustration began to rise after a period of time and then the darkness appeared. It beckoned for more frustration. The thought about the rest of the council and the ban on the study of this darkness. Their thoughts turned into more frustration and eventually to anger. The council was holding them back from all that they could be. The darkness had a power to it and made the Force complete. Yet they wanted to keep this from everyone.

Their anger grew more and more as they dwelt on this. The darkness liked this and fed their emotions more and more, consuming every fiber of their thoughts and feelings. Then it showed them new techniques of lightsaber battle, how to attack fast and furiously, how to push something or someone with little effort. It also showed them a future. In that future, the darkness reigned supreme and its power would be virtually unlimited.

The thought of this made them all desire more and more of the darkness, but it witheld. It promised more, but not today. Today they could not handle all that it had to offer. The thought of this sent Kalfar into a rage and a booming Force push slammed into the tree next to him knocking it over. Rage consumed him so much that his eyes turned yellow with a red around it.

This sent the others a distance away in fear. As Kalfar's rage settled, the darkness within him seemed proud. It revealed to each of them that this was only a taste of the power they could tap into. It showed them a quick scene of the peak power of one who was controlled by the darkness, lightning from one's hands, a tornado formed from the Force, and a bomb that would kill all in the vicinity of the user, including the user.

Then the darkness receded with the promise of more revelation in time.

They all marveled at what they had seen and felt. As they headed back to their homes, they heard the voice of Shintor through the Force. There was a meeting of the Council to be held that evening.

Had they felt what had happened through the Force? The darkness had shown them how to mask it, but did Kalfar's rage go too far and overshadow the cover they had? They each feared what would happen the rest of that day, but as the time of the meeting approached, meditated and tried the best they could, to use what the darkness taught them to cover their fear, anger, and frustration.
