I think this may have been asked & answered so sorry if its been. Couldn't find the tread. I was wondering if anyone might have some ideas how how R2 knew where to go on Tattooine? I know he was trying to get 3PO to go his way. But he seemed to know where to go, even after his clever escape from Luke.[face_thinking]

    GPS?

Actually, who knows what happened in the years between ROTS and ANH? Bail Organa may have had secret contacts or surveillance on Kenobi during those years and then programmed it into R2.

    Obi-Wan probably told him.

Don't know if it counts but, in the radio dramas Leia gives him coordinates while she's giving him the plans and recording her message to Obi Wan. R2 then pilots the escape pod in orbit to put them near those coordinates before entering the atmosphere.

That's the most logical explanation. Obi-Wan has some outside contact during the years between (EU), and it is likely that Bail would be included in that at some point. Obi-Wan could tell Bail his approximate location in case of emergency, and he could tell Leia, then Leia could tell R2.

    You guys basically have it.

Obi Wan was more than likely in concact with Bail Organa at some point to tell him of his location e.g. (Obi Wan to Bail - "I will let you know of my whereabouts so that, if needed, in your most desperate hour, you may contact me")

Then Leia simply gave R2 the co-ordinates. Simple.

Luke did talk about Ben Kenobi, this strange old hermit that lived beyond the dune sea when he was cleaning the droids. Maybe R2 thought that information was enough at that point

there is no possisble way they could have been in contact because why did kanobi react to hearing the name obi-wan kanobi, saying he had not heard of it in a long time, and princess lea only called him by the name obi won so that is not a possible answer

    TLJ Edit: Don't flame

He used his wireless connection and connected to the Tattoine 411 and asked for a listing for "Kenobi".

He went to the yellow pages and looked under "Dune Sea Hermits".

    All two of them.
