Too bad I don't live in New Haven.

New Haven is also throwing a party before filming begins.

    The New Haven Register

City to celebrate filming of latest 'Indiana Jones' movie
    Ed Stannard, Register Metro Editor
    06/06/2007

NEW HAVEN ? With "Indiana Jones" coming downtown, it's going to be party time!

A free movie! Aerial acrobats! A matzo ball-eating contest! Poison darts!

Well, the poison darts will be only on the big screen set up on the Green, where "Raiders of the Lost Ark," the movie that made Indiana Jones an instant hero, will be shown.

The celebration, which will be held on the Green and along Temple Street between Chapel and George, will kick off at 5 p.m. June 26, two nights before the fourth "Indy" movie starts filming downtown.

"It's a way of the city welcoming the production crew and the production crew being excited by the city," said Barbara Lamb, director of the city's Office of Cultural Affairs.

Lamb said there will be carousel rides, the New Haven County Cutters' mascot and lots of fun family stuff. Her office also is booking the Aerial Angels, a female acrobatic act from Michigan.

Meanwhile, many of the restaurants and clubs on Temple, led by Diner 21 and Katz's II on Temple (that's where you'll find the matzo balls), will entice people with promotions, possibly including a laser show.

The business people want to show off how Temple Street has grown from a row of empty storefronts to a lively strip of eateries.

"Ten years ago, nobody wanted to come here," said Mark McKinley of Katz's. "Now everybody wants to come."

"A lot of people don't even know about the bottom part of Temple Street," said Lesley Luciana of Diner 21. "It's basically to bring people down here and try to get them into our restaurants."

Some plans will depend on whether the city can close Temple between Crown and George. The Chapel-to-Crown block can't be closed because of required access to the Omni Hotel, but the Board of Aldermen has given tentative approval to the second block, Lamb said.

The holdup is the owners of the Criterion Cinemas, who are objecting to closing the block and are unhappy about the free movie, according to a discussion Lamb and business owners held at a planning meeting Tuesday.

If the street were open to traffic, there may not be space for a band and it may be difficult to put on the laser show, she said.

Referring to Joe Masher of Bow Tie Cinemas, which owns the Criterion, McKinley said, "His main grief is showing that movie on the Green."

Lamb said she hoped Masher would come around.

Scott C.Healy, executive director of the Town Green Special Services District, sympathized with Masher. "They're not villains here," he told the gathering. "They're trying to run a business and they've done a lot for New Haven."

Masher, who is based in Ridgefield, would not discuss the issue. "We have no comment on the matter," he said. "It's an ongoing matter."

Paramount Pictures will shoot a chase scene from the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie, starring Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and Shia LeBeouf from June 28 to July 7.

That's sweet. I think I'm going to make the trip from Long Island to New Haven!

I don't suppose they're limiting the extras to certain ethnicities?

Casting details from the New Haven Register.

'Indiana Jones' casting call starts Monday
    Ed Stannard, Register Metro Editor
    06/11/2007

NEW HAVEN ? Downtown becomes the center of the "Indiana Jones" universe for area fans today as casting for extras gets under way for a chase scene that will be shot in the city just 2½ weeks from now.

Those hoping to be chosen as bit players in the fourth installment of the Harrison Ford adventure series can go to the Omni New Haven Hotel, 155 Temple St., from 1 to 9 p.m. today or Tuesday with a head and shoulders photo. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Billy Dowd Casting will be taking applications for paid extras in the Paramount Pictures film, directed by Steven Spielberg, which will involve a chase down Chapel Street and through the Yale campus. Chapel Street will be transformed to look like 1957 for the scene, which will be filmed between June 28 and July 7.

Barbara Lamb, director of the city's Office of Cultural Affairs, who has been coordinating the myriad details of a major Hollywood production taking over parts of New Haven, said she can't say for sure how many people will queue up for the casting call.

"I can only say that I have received more phone calls and e-mails than I care to respond to, so I am anticipating a huge crowd, but I really don't know."

Fans from as far as Italy have inquired about being part of the "Indiana Jones" series. The fourth film stars Ford, Cate Blanchett and Shia LeBeouf, but not, as he announced last week, Sean Connery. Members of the location crew have said Ford is likely to be on scene in New Haven. The others are uncertain.

The casting call will be held in the Omni's Whalley Room on the second floor.

It went from 1-9 today. Me and a few friends showed up around 7:45, and there was at least 1000 people there. Thankfully, its open the same time tomorrow and I'm going back to try again at 12:30. If any JCers are making the trip, send me a PM and I'll keep an eye out for you!

    Wish me luck!

    Hi Jp-30,
I wish I saw this earlier - but they were letting folks in at 8:00 am - I was in and out in 30 minutes on Monday - My friends went today to be football players in the scene and were also out in 30 minutes.

I was there and brought the Entertainment Weekly article that shows me as obssesed fan of the week and hopes that gets some extra attention and gets me in there!

Good luck to both of us --

No one lied to anyone -- I think they got the word it was 1-9 - but the folks were being accomadating to the fans/extras who slept out and were there at 8:00am (like me). I read reports that they were seeing people all day -- it was hot out - and they could have been "by the book" and opened at 1:00 -

The casting paper wanted info such as:

    Football experience
    Cheerleading experience
    Dog ownership

And details therein such as what level, breed, et cetera. Not really sure what they were looking for other than football players and cheerleaders. although the rumor was going around that they were looking for bikers. Like, hell's angel types. Which we still have an active chapter of in Hartford, actually. They were involved in a murder near me last year. A few weeks ago there was a casting call for classic 1950's era cars, but i didn't hear anything about classic motorcycles.

There had to have been upwards of 2000 people there just when I left, at 2:30. And I had showed up at noon. I'd say about 10,000 in all showed up over the course of the two days.

If I hear anything I'll let everyone know.
