Is 3P0 Dumb? "Damage doesn't look as bad out here..."

This line hit me last week,I never really payed attention to it. When R2 and 3P0 use to escape, they look back at the Star Destoryed. Now they don't see the blockade runner,just the Star Destoryer. However 3P0 says "The damage doesn't look as bad from out here"
Do he think the Blockade Runner is a Star Destoryer! Or did he thin the B.Runner had the power to damage a Star Destoryer?

 

I think he was remarking on the blockade runner still being in one piece since all Hell was breaking loose on the inside.

 

But he couldn't really see the Runner, being that it was in the Star Destoryer, right? Maybe he could see the bottom of it.

 

I've always wondered about this, and came to the conclusion that Threepio wasn't really that well acquainted/interested in starship design and actually thought the Star Destroyer was the Blockade Runner. I thought it was intended as a (sort-of) humorous moment after the intensity of the opening battle.

I agree, I think the line is meant to show that C-3PO is clueless about technical stuff.

 

It seems you're all assuming Threepio has eyesight as poor as a human. Not really likely if you think about it.

 

No, I'm not saying Threepio's eyesight is poor, simply that he doesn't realise that the Star Destroyer is a separate ship to the one he was on. My argument is that this is because he has no knowledge of starships - he is built for protocol after all.

 

Well he would have boarded the Tantive IV at some point, unless he was switched off and taken aboard unwittingly of course he'd know what ship he was on.

 

Sure, I just assumed he would have paid no attention to the ship's design - this would have been an area of little interest to him. Of course I could be wrong!

 

He's talking about the blockade runner, from which he had just ejected. As he was hurtling away from the blockade runner, he saw the exterior of the ship and remarked that the damage didn't look as bad from the outside as it sounded from the inside. He certainly knows the difference between the ship he was on and a Star Destroyer. He probably doesn't have technical knowledge, but the difference in size alone is a dead give away.

C3PO must have seen the Rebel ship outside of the Star Destroyer since they were able to use an escape pod from the Rebel ship. C3PO just waited until they were safe to say anything to R2.

 

But Go-Mer-Tonic, we see a POV shot of the Star Destroyer as the pod hurtles away from it, and if I remember correctly the Star Destroyer itself is pretty small. So how could Threepio assess the damage to the Blockade Runner from that distance?

 

^^^Because he can see better than you or i could. Do you really think he sees like a human being?

 

He started out much closer to the ship. They jumped ahead a bit and didn't show everything.

 

Yeah, the more I think about it... 3PO must have some basic starship knowledge, if only to function as a protocol droid. He sure knows what a stardestroyer is in ESB.

I still think that my interpretation was funnier... thank you anonymous internet person for destroying another SW illusion.

 

I'm more curious as to what R2's reponse was. He blabbered something and 3P0 says, "Oh," as if everything had been explained.

 

I think he was saying, in his on way, "Dumb ass, that's not our ship"

 

What makes you think that 3P0 couldn't see the Tantive?

 

Just a guess, if he did it wouldn't be much of it. The under-belly maybe
also I thought right before the line, it shows a view of the Star Destory, from were the POD is.

 

Threepio has some knowledge of starships...or otherwise...Chewie wouldn't have plugged "The Professor" into the hyperdrive.

That's exactly what I was about to say. 3PO does have basic knowledge of starships.

Actually, 3PO is not entirely useless. Besides translation, he's capable of driving speeders, programming and presumably doing mathematics.

 

Also, keep in mind that the explosion we saw on Tantive IV during the opening chase was on the top. In the escape pod, the droids were seeing the ship from the bottom. And I'm pretty sure that I didn't see any explosions there.

He's a droid. I'm sure he'll have better vision than normal humans do and would be able to focus in on the Blockade Runner.
