A mysterious object that washed up onto a beach in Wellington, New Zealand is now thought to be whale vomit.

Locals were initially convinced that the large creamy looking mass was a big lump of cheese, but it has now been revealed that it could be ambergris, the fancy term for whale excretion.

The ambergris - roughly the size of a 44-gallon drum and weighs anything up to 500kg - is one of the valuable ingredients used to make perfume. The mass is produced by whales when they have an allergic reaction to squid and is considered valuable because of its rarity and the uncertainty of supply.

Locals believe the block to be worth $500,000.
