I did a quick search and could not find anything. Does anyone know if it is legal to have a Vader/Jedi style funeral where you are burned in the open?

I often thought of that myself , Like Vader and Qui-Gon ....I don't know
I'd be kinda strange though in this generation.

Why would a cremation NOT be legal?

Cremations are generally held in a covered area, not in a full view Viking-style setting. However, I suspect that if you live in an area where trash disposal via combustion is legal...:p

Googling "funeral pyre" brings up results that is definitely illegal in the UK. But nothing really definitive about the US. A couple of points about environmental laws and whatnot. I think the government frowns on letting people do whatever they want with corpses. Unfortunately, I'd have to assume it is illegal.

On the other hand, you could always go to India! [face_dancing]

Thanks for the info. I've often thought about having this done for myself, but I do not want to burden my family with a lot of extra hassle when I die. I definetly want to be cremated, but it would be cooler if I could do it Jedi style.

It would be pretty awesome, but yeah. Sounds like a lot of legal issues to leave your family with. :(

There might be some sort of thing about desecrating a corpse.

I sort of thought that too, but I wasn't entirely sure about it since cremating is legal. And really, a funeral pyre is more or less cremating outside. :p

I have no idea what is even considered desecration. Burning a corpse isn't desecration per se, but this is. (It's a news artical - no graphic images.)However, it might be different if it's requested. But I would say that it doesn't matter because of all of the environmental laws and whatnot. Especially since I bet it's considered a biohazard.

Do I look like a lawyer to you? :) As far as I know somehting like that would be called "mutilation of a corpse" under US Law, which is a misdemenour. But I am basing all this by a John Grisham novel, so what would I know. You do need licenses I think to dispose of human bodies.

However, you're not going to be completely gone from a Jedi funeral. A look at this article shows that you're not going to be ashes after death, but bones. And I doubt a fire would produce a fire as strong or hot as a crematoria.
