On Anakin's canon Wookieepedia page it states: "Anakin Skywalker was born to the slave Shmi Skywalker. Skywalker and his mother were originally owned by Gardulla the Hutt until she lost them to the Toydarian Watto in a podracing bet when Skywalker was age 3. The two then moved to the desert world of Tatooine."

And on Gardulla's canon Wookieepedia page it states that her homeworld is Nal Hutta. So, we obviously know that Anakin wasn't born on Tatooine, so it is possible that he was born on Nal Hutta and lived there for the first three years of his life?

Backstories: Darth Vader makes a point of mentioning that it's not exactly clear where Anakin was born - whether it was Tatooine, or off-planet.

So, Gardulla may have been residing on Tatooine during Anakin's early life, before losing him and Shmi to Watto.

Sure, why not? Although if Palpatine created Anakin like so many people believe (and is a pretty believable theory) than it could be that he was born on Naboo.

It's possible, but we probably won't find out unless it comes out in some publication. :)

Who knows, unless the Story Group feels the need to define his birth location in canon.

yes, In fact it's possible. But for the moment, no official source talk about it. :)

That seems incredibly unlikely, Naboo is in the Republic, thus covered by anti-slavery laws. It just doesn't seem the place for a slave trade. It's too rich for someone of Shmi's standing to ever visit.

True, but are we sure that Shmi was a slave when Anakin was born?

    1. Wookieepedia is not a source.
    2. Anakin was sold to Gardulla before she lost him and her mother to Watto, so Gardulla was not Anakin's first owner.

Gardulla might come from Nal Hutta - but she resided on Tatooine. Anakin came to Tatooine when he was a baby - or was born on Tatooine - records apparently are not clear.

    Star Wars Backstories: Darth Vader:

It is uncertain where Anakin was born. Some records say Anakin was born on Tatooine; other sources say Anakin and his mother, Shmi Skywalker, arrived on the remote planet of Tatooine when Anakin was very young.
Even though the Republic had outlawed slavery, Tatooine was in the galaxy's Outer Rim. On the distant planets, laws were difficult to enforce. The idea that "might makes right" was the law in these lands.
Anakin and Shmi were slaves owned by Gardulla the Hutt. They had no freedom. Anakin grew up with a transmitter implanted in his body. The transmitter allowed his master to track hims whereabouts at all times. Slaves did not have any rights, and their owners could trade or sell them.
Anakin grew up without a father. Most on Tatooine assumed Anakin's father had died or been sold to some other master, breaking up their family. But the truth was much stranger.
There was no father. Shmi didn't know how she became pregnant. When she gave birth she was frightened, but was relieved when Anakin turned out to be a typical happy baby boy. Shmi kept the truth about her son's birth secret. She knew that people either wouldn't believe her or would be afraid.
Shmi tried to give Anakin the best life she could. She worked hard for her master Gardulla to ensure her son had enough to eat and a place to sleep. She almost never imagined escaping slavery, but she dreamed Anakin would be free one day. Shmi did everything she could to make sure the boy's time as a slave would have as little effect on him as possible.
When Anakin was only three, Gardulla the Hutt's habit of betting on Tatooine's podraces led to a new owner for Anakin and his mother. Gardulla lost a podracing bet to a pudgy, winged Toydarian named Watto. The bet was for two slaves.

So - chances are, even if he wasn't born on Tatooine, most of his first three years of life were spent there with Gardulla. It's unclear whether Shmi was already Gardulla's slave when she had Anakin, or not.

Anakin stated that he and his mother were sold to Gardulla, so he was already born when he was sold to her. He also said that he's been there (Tatooine) since he was around 3 years old. Everything else is EU speculation.

    Fair enough.

I would suggest that "Have you been here long" might apply to Watto's shop, rather than to Tatooine in general - so Anakin was lost to Watto when he was 3, and was sold to Gardulla an unknown amount of time before that.

That's not what the conversation implies. They are talking about the planet (see bolded parts below), not the spaceport or Watto's shop.

Anakin: "I'm a pilot, you know. And someday, I'm going to fly away from this place."

    Padmé: "You're a pilot?"

Anakin: "Hmm, hmm. All my life."

Padmé: "How long have you been here?"

Anakin: "Since I was very little. 3, I think. My mom and I were sold to Gardulla the Hutt, but she lost us betting on the podraces."

    Padmé: "You're a slave?"

Anakin: "I'm a person and my name is Anakin."

Padmé: "I'm sorry, I don't fully understand. This is a strange place to me."

It's also not established at what age he was sold to Gardulla or to Watto. All we know is that he's been on Tatooine since he was 3.

Its defiantly possible. The only things we know from cannon, as far as I'm aware, is that Shmi and Anakin have lived on Tatooine since they were won by Watto, when he was three. Though according to her Wookipedia page she is in attendance at the Boonta Eve Classic, so its also possible that she was living on Tatooine while owning the Skywalkers.

Certainly we know Shmi and Anakin were original the property of Gardulla the Hutt-so a birth in the centre of Hutt Space is very likely.

We don't know at what time Gardulla lost them to Watto nor where they were when they were sold to and owned by Gardulla.

Anakin was sold to Gardulla (thus she was not his first owner), so he was already born when she got him and Shmi.

Correction, it is Plagueis who is theorized to be the creator of Anakin, not Palpatine.

No, it's a pretty wide opinion that Palpatine created him with the knowledge he got from Plagueis. Anakin was 9 years old in TPM, by all cannon sources, Palpatine had had Darth Maul as an apprentice since he was a kid. Plagueis had to die for Palaptine to take an apprentice.

You're gonna have to give me some sources on that (I don't know what your second two sentences have to do with this). I'm basing my views on what is presented in the movie. In the Opera scene Palpatine clearly states that Plagueis had the power to create life, and simultaneously he gives Anakin the kind of meaningful gaze that can only be interpreted at a subtle hint of his origins. Yes, he also says that Plagueis taught his apprentice everything he knew, but later on we find out that Palpatine either didn't have the power to save lives or that he kept it secret from Anakin.

Plus I think it's undisputable that Palpatine didn't know about Anakin before TPM, so I don't know how he could have created him.

The point of the second sentence is to show that it would be impossible for Plagus to have created him since he would have been dead for years.

Yes, I believe Plagueis was the one who actually physically performed the Force act that created Anakin, but Palpatine was definitely present when it happened.

Are you not aware of the Plagueis book? He was alive well into the happenings of the first half of TPM. Yes, it's no longer canon, but without any new canon info, it's a good indicator of what might have been going on behind the scenes.

And I suppose you're trying to imply that because Palpatine had an apprentice, then Plagueis couldn't possibly have been alive anymore? The rule of two doesn't mean that it's physically impossible to have more than two Sith at any one moment, it's just a guideline/philosophy that Palpatine (in the context of the now legends Plagueis book) simply didn't follow when he started teaching Maul. But if I remember correctly he disposed of his master pretty soon after, so it didn't make that much of difference with regards to the Rule of the two.

Ok. Honestly, I really don't care. I'm not going to endlessly debate theoretical scenarios that will probably never get an explanation. But have fun with it.
