See if you can find a new japanese font.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you need to have a japanese keyboard and computer set up to type japanese, alas it isn't as simple as finding a japanase font, since the entire thing is laid out differently. A western computer/keyboard probably won't be able to view/create japanese text at all. :(

I had to do a multi-language brochure once and the japanse and chine text was supplied by the translators as illustrator .eps file where the type was set to outlines. It was a real pain to create, all becuase my western keyboard couldn't display the stuff any other way...

All you have to do is download a Japanese font. The hard part is figuring out which keys type which characters, but I do it all the time with my Western keyboard.

It's still not that simple. Some symbols mean letters. Some symbols mean entire words.

A font is not going to solve your problems. Finding someone to help you who knows how to read and write the language is a good starting point.

You can download seperate hiragana, katakana, and kanji fonts. I speak Japanese, I know these things.

Katakana is the writing style for words from foreign languages. For example, konputaa, the Japanese word for computer, is derived from English, so it's written in katakana. Hiragana and kanji are for native Japanese words.

Just filling out Joe's reply a little bit: Kanji are ideograms of Chinese derivation that represent words (roughly 2,000 are used in normal Japanese usage, a newspaper, for instance). Katakana and hiragana are sillabaries wherein each character represents a phonetic sound -- a syllable -- but have no meaning on their own.

Depending on what type of character you want, there are Kanji "fonts" that you can purchase via the web (vintagetype.com for instance) that work quite well in Photoshop. They may not contain the specific character you're looking for, though.

i can speak and write japanese. Windows alows me to type documents in japanese just fine.

The problem i am having is in the title programs that i have and in photoshop, is that i type a japanese charecter just fine but the end product just is a bunch of question marks ????

You dont need a keyboard or fonts or anything like that, i am quite sure.

Why would word read japanese but photoshop not?

i don't know how to speak/spell/write in japanese but arn't there more characters in the Japanese language than in English (26 letters). So then wouldn't you need a special keyboard unless of course there is something like character map where you can hold alt and press in the number pad code of the character you want.

If i am just speaking nonsense then i am sorry, i know nothing about the language.

No, the way we type japanese is to type how the words sounds using the roman alphabit. it then translate to the charecters.

But thats not the point!! Typing the charecters isnt the problem its getting photoshop to recognize them.
