I wanted to make a thread saying it is and people need to figure it out, but maybe I'm just crazy.

Isn't it kind of rude when you're paying for stuff to put the money down? Just hand it to me!

    yes YOU!

I'd rather not touch your hands which you most likely don't wash after taking a slash

I think they're supposed to hand the money to your pimp.

I could really care less whether customers hand me the money or put it on the counter. I don't see why it matters.

    a) slash? like... slash? or some british thing? besides, you don't actually touch my hands. Unless you're handing me change, sometimes.

    b) no, they're supposed to give it to me. I give all the money to my pimp at the end of my shift.

    c) I'm not sure what's wrong with it, but it definitely irks me, so there must be a reason.

I try, as a habit, to hand the money to the cashier. The only time I put the money on the counter is if I have already pulled it out and the barista or whoever may be serving me is still running around completing my & others' orders. My mentality has been that the cash is there at their convenience and they can now ring up my order at their own pace whenever they get back to the register.

I have no particular memory of making a point of either, which means I've almost certainly done both before.

Could you guys expand on the perspective that would classify it as rude? Why?

That is the exact exception to the rule, Myke.

breaks are also given to a) children, because the don't know any better and/or their parents aren't/haven't teaching/taught them any better and b) foreigners, because I don't know what they hey kind of customs they have or how they hey long they've been here for.

Still, in both a and b, it is still annoying and facesmacks have to be holstered.

As long as they pay you, who cares if it's handed directly to you or put on the counter/bar.

Pretty much, what Myke said. If the cashier is busy, I'll put the money on the counter. If the cashier is standing right in front of me, I'll hand it to him / her. I think it's definitely rude to place the money on the counter if the person is standing right there.

wocky- As I said, I'm unsure exactly why it comes off as rude, (though often it's clear that's not intentional), but let me give it a shot:

-It's extra work for me to pick it up. Small gripe, I know, though, good lord... with coins? A lot of coins? It can be pretty ridiculous.

-It's less personal. I'm a human. You can hand it to me. which sort of contributes to

-We're on the same level. Some people treat service industry workers like they're servants. We serve, but we're not your servants. Something about putting the money on the counter strikes me as having an air [sp] of superiority to it. Like, "pick it up."

This is not necessarily the exact reason/s, but it's a shot.

DG- I'm disappointed in you. You're normally so respectable!!

It's just common courtesy. The fact that you're the person handing over the money, doesn't give you a license to be rude to the person taking it.

What degree of rudeness is it to actually physically move the cashier's undesirable hand in order to put the money on the counter below it? [face_dancing]

They reach out to recieve the money and you shove it aside with your wrist to put the money on the counter. Now, there's a statement.

I agree with DD about the "less personal" aspect of it. I kinda pursue seeing the dignity in every person I come into contact with, so I tend to go above and beyond in my interaction with people who work in service of any kind. My wife appreciates that about me, but it still drives her batty when she wants to discuss something at dinner and I'm the guy who invites the busboys to sit down at our booth and hang out with us for a minute.

people who don't hand money over directly to the cashier obviously think too highly of themselves. not a plesant character trait.

I was in Whole Foods last week and the poor cashier was having a rather merciless day. I always talk to cashiers, and she really broke down about how vicious her customers had been that day, and she was stressing because the line at her register was long. I told her I was gonna act like an a-hole and clog up her line til they left. She laughed, and I actually did it. I got loud and obnoxious about prices and how if I had known this item was going to cost this much I wouldn't have picked it up. I went off on their selection. I tried to sound like every self-entitled, better-than-you **** I have ever been near in a store or restaraunt and when the girl behind the register was trying not to laugh, but also trying to apologize and appease my insane ranting, the line emptied to other registers in like 45 seconds. I told her to have an awesome rest of her day and hang in there, and she said her day was better already. And, one more time, my poor wife had to be caught up in my insane approach to altruism. She is a strong woman.

I don't mind people putting money on the counter if they're trying to count it out or if I'm busy doing something. However, if I'm standing there waiting for payment and even have my hand out, yes, it was one of my biggest pet peeve.

myke that is really awesome. luckily i don't have to handle money at my job, but it's one of my pet peeves when people put their library card on the counter instead of just handing it to me. i think it's mostly not even done on purpose, but it still bugs me.

If I have the money ready to give to the cashier, and he/ she is not ready to take it, I put the money down. I'm not going to stand there holding money.

Anyway, what about when cashiers put the coins ON TOP of the bills when they are giving change? WTF is that about? Are they just stupid?

Your OP implied that you are the cashier and don't like it when people put money on the counter instead of to you. My response was to suggest that should there be change owed to the purveyor, that you reciprocate their lack of manners.
