Certainlly possible. The ships we saw being used by the Republic in ROTS were clearly the forerunners of the X-Wing.

    (taken from EU)

The X-wing was designed by the Incom corporation (hence the Incom T-65 designation) and was originally intended for the Empire. However, partially due to the Emperor not wanting to pay for fighters with shielding, hyperdrive, and warheads, and partially due to some other political reasons, a number of Incom scientists fled to the rebellion, taking the X-wing design with them. And of course, the rebellion was more than willing to use the design.

Incom designed the ARC-170 (X-Wing forerunner) and Sienar Systems would develop the TIE Fighter. Once the Empire went totally evil however, Incom gave their designs to the Rebellion while Sienar stayed with the Empire.

NO! The Rebels would never steal. Come on, dude! They're good guys.

Good guys have morals. I mean Han Solo, for example, would never shoot someone from underneath a table in pre-emptive attack. What a ridiculous notion. Han Solo is a good guy (future Rebel) and good guys always wait until they are shot at first before they strike back!

The same goes for stealing. Whoever heard of a good thief...besides Robin Hood that is...and he dosn't exist in the GFFA.

Nothing was stolen by the Rebels. It is as the above poster says: When Palpatine became Emperor he attempted to remove all possible social, political and military threats to his rule. As a result, many companies suspected of Rebel sympathies found themseleves forcibly taken over by the Empire. The Incom Corporation was one such company. Imperial agents were aware that several high ranking Incom Executives and the majority of the design team were sympathetic to the burgeoining Rebellion. Imperial Security Bureau Operatives detained and question these people and that only lead to them leaning more towards the Rebels. Hence, when they were released they defected to the Alliance taking the top secret plans of the X-Wing with them.
