I have been reading EU and some of my friends say to read the Jedi Academy Trilogy which is one the good ones( the best being Thrawn) and I just wanted some expert opinions of the Jedi on TFN.

Hey General_Calrissian! Welcome to TFN! Personally, the Jedi Academy trilogy has to be one of my all time favourites. I would thoroughly recommend it,

It may not be the best writing style, but it sets up many major events that most of the later EU is heavily based on.

I found it to be a very cool series, and KJA's writing style has a pace and feel that best matches that of the OT films.

When your done reading the series, you may want to read "I, Jedi", which retells some of the events of the trilogy from another character's POV.

Also, "Darksaber" is something of a sequel to the trilogy by KJA and is also quite good.

It's a fun read, sets up major events for the rest of the novels, and certainly gives birth to one of the most controversial EU characters out there. :) *cough*KypDurron*cough* ;)

After you've read that, read I,Jedi by Michael Stackpole, since it ties right in along with it. Another fantastic book; the best piece of SW lit in my opinion.

One thing to note also is that some major events happen between the end of the Thrawn series and the start of the JAT in the comic series Dark Empire. So you might want to either read that first or at least find an online summary (try the Time Tales link at the top of this page in the forum header) so that your briefly aware of the events in that series, otherwise two or three references in the series might seem a little confusing.

....well, JAT is required reading, as it DOES set up the basis upon which
many of the stories that proceed it are based..

However, beware of Kevin "Worst writer in the Known Universe" Anderson...

Guy has a constant habit of coming up with interesting ideas/possiblities and then completely blowing the payoff...

I honestly don't understand why he continues to get work...(He's currently in the process of ruining the mythos of Frank Herbert's "DUNE"!)

EDIT: Oh, and "Darksaber" is one of the three books that caused me to refuse to purchase a STAR WARS EU novel for over 5 years (only when it seemed as if KJA was no longer even in the running to write a Star Wars novel did i cautiously rejoin the fold...)Steer clear at all costs!

There's nothing wrong with Darksaber. It's a good novel.

I thought the novels were pretty good, aside from the way KJA completely mishandled the Daala stuff.

There's nothing wrong with Darksaber. It's a good novel.

    *gag*
I actually performed a Zaphod Breeblebox on my brain so i don't even have to THINK about that book, ever again...

Though, to it's credit, it is marginally better then "The Courtship of someone who might look like but sure doesn't act like Princess Leia"..

EDIT (Bib! It's obvious that KJA is using a Jedi mindtrick on you, much the same way that Luke did in ROTJ! ;) )

You'll find that Darksaber is actually pretty well liked overall- although there are still some people who hate it, but thats true for almost any SW book.

The only good thing about Darksaber was *Coughs a spoiler* and the worst part was *coughs another spoiler*

It was extremely boring. I'd judge for yourself, though. Go to your library and check the books out - don't waste your $$ unless you really enjoyed the book (as in from the library)

I enjoyed Jedi Academy series but can't read it again. We do get more on Wedge and and the all important first crop of Lukes students.

Actually the first Star Wars book I ever read was The Dark Apprentice (the 2nd book in th JAT trilogy). For the longest time, it was my favorite book ever. But then I realized I should probably read the 1st and 3rd books. :p So I did, and I was left with just as good of a taste in my mouth as when I read The Dark Apprentice.

I highly recomend these books. :D

Absolutley! These were some of the first SW books I read and they are probably responcible for me reading every other one after that.

I haven't read them more than once but I can still vividly remember many scenes in the trilogy. You should definitly check them out if you want to learn more about Kyp Durron. Exar Kun has a few appearences if your into that. One of my favorite parts in Book 1 I think are the scenes with Gantoris. It desbribes what he is going through, and how he is close to the darkside but still unwilling to give in to darkness.

Very good books. Don't delay! :)

I had fun reading the JAT. It has a "wild and wahoo!" sort of feel to it.

I recommend the JAT. While not the best written books in SW EU, in my opinion they are a very fun read, and have the Star Wars feel to them.

Plus, whether you love or hate him, this is where Kyp Durron, controversial Jedi Master first appears.

"Best written" is kinda subjective. I read JAT after I read TTT, and while I kinda got the jist of TTT it almost bored me to the point where I didn't want to read any more SW. If not for my views that "if it's Star Wars then I must read it" then I probably never would have read another one. Then Dark Empire (a comic) and the JAT saved me from my boredom. See, I started into Star Wars over ten years ago. When I was ELEVEN. I found KJA's writing style to be compatible with my reading level and attention span at the time. I'm guessing that some might have found them boring because they were a little too juvenille, but they were great as a springboard to better things. Kinda glad they stopped Bantam SW books though, or else I probably wouldn't be here today. :p

I highly recommend them. Anderson does a great job of blending adventure and humor. He does have an annoying tendency to re-use lines verbatim from the original trilogy, but it's tolerable.
