Is Lucas obsesed with incest? (Luke and Leia)

I've always wondered,why did Lucas have Luke kinda have a crush on Leia before he relized that she was his sister? Is it something to do with a disturbed childhood? a strange fantasy? Tell me what you all think. Thanks.

 

We can get very Freudian, but the use of a sister/brother archetype is popular in fantasy/sci-fiction mythos...King Arthur, Dune...

Incest is a very common theme in world mythology - though it must also be remembered that at the stage of writing ESB, Lucas hadn't decided to make them brother and sister.

 

I'm a fan of the Children of Dune mini-series that played on Sci-fi channel and in that series Leto and Ghanima seemed very "friendly" with one another. Was there anything going on between those two in the books?

Since I don't believe Luke and Leia had sexual relations, it wasn't incest. Furthermore, Leia was not originally intended to be Luke's sister, she was to be introduced as a new character.

 

They romantically kissed. Once. The other times they were pecks on the cheek or face that are the same as siblings share. So nothing they really did could be considered "incest."

But the bigger part of it, really, was that Lucas didn't decide to make them twins until ROTJ. I've heard (and don't take this verbatim, it's been awhile) that the original plot of ESB had Luke turning to the dark side, and his sister would be introduced in movie 3 to help bring him back. Hence why having a love triangles with Han/Leia/Luke wasn't a big deal until he reworked the idea.

I personally like the way he did it. Much better than trying to introduce a pivotal character in the last movie and reworking a plot around it. Luke and Leia's chemistry was more friendship/sibling anyway, so it came to head when it turned out they really were sister and brother. (No, really, watch ROTJ sometime and compare how they interact then to the other movies. Lucas did a great job of directing their mannerisms to mirror each others.)

It had to be a beautiful moment for Lucas, to realize that his created characters worked right into his hands. If nothing else, he sure had a good laugh at his fans' expense.

 

That is the only scene I wouldnt mind removing, where Luke and Leia kiss.

 

It'll definitely be a weird scene now...before it was meant to be humourous.

Leia didn't kiss Luke because she was in love with him, she kissed Luke because she was in love with Han. That's why the scene works.

 

Oh yes, she's doing it just to wind up Han.

Still, couldn't she have kissed Chewie instead? It wouldn't be her brother for a start, and he could use a good kiss...

 

I'm surprise it hasn't been made into an icon titled "Forbidden Love" (that title would definately make more sense for it then Anakin & Padme...)

 

I agree, it was obviously to aggravate Han. I really don't think I'd go as far as to call Luke and Leia's relationship incestuous..

 

Lucas isn't, but it seems that some fans are.

 

Well, you know what Kershner says about kissing in Star Wars. LOL! But no, I agree that Leia only kissed Luke in ESB to make Han jealous. This is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Also, it's certain that Lucas didn't intend for Luke and Leia to be siblings from the beginning so I don't think Lucas intended for incest to be a theme.

 

It doesnt really bother me because there twins. Its almost like kissing your arm. Twins are weird...

 

For one, any farm boy that goes off the rescure a princess and fight the evil Empire is going to have a crush on that saved princess. I mean he didn't see many women like her.
So its normal.
also he didn't know it was his sister. If anything its even better that Lucas added this in the film. It makes it seem real. If he didn't we would be saying "How come Luke never thought Liea was hot, etc"

Also this is the only "incest" thing in the film. 1 case doesn't make Lucas "obsessed" with it.

Also having a crush on your siter, sick maybe, but incest it is not.

 

A single kiss doesn't make Lucas obsessed.

I dunno. Wasn't Cammie (Fixer's girlfriend) supposed to be some sort of beauty? I know Luke had a crush on her...

...But, eh, he might have lost out on the Leia thing due to blood, but he seems to be doing fine otherwise. He's currently married to a really hot former assassination chic in the EU.

Yeah, Luke got around pretty well, and he sure is a forgiving guy. First forgiving his daddy for the hand cutoff, and then Mara for her attempts to assassinate him. And didn't he witness her actually cutting down the clone Luuke? That would've freaked me out for sure. I haven't read the EU novels with their marriage and so on...just the facts brought to my by sw.com.

 

Luke and Leia were definitely sleeping together. It is perfectly safe to assume this because if any of you have read The Cestus Deception, You would know that if anybody kisses somebody, they had sex. Jangotat had kissed that black chick so many times, but it never says they had sex. but at the end of the book the black chick is el prego. Leia has also shown Luke her boobs on many an occasion. BOOBS

 

If you look at the original one sheet of ANH, Leia's touching Luke's leg. If there was no flirtation between Luke and Leia even though they didn't know they were brother and sister, it'd make Luke look like gay and couldn't have a real friendly rivalry between Luke and Han in ANH.

 

I don't know for sure, but maybe Lucas grew up knowing of an experience such as the issue at hand. Or, he could be obsessed. What's nice to watch might not necessarily be what one wants to do.
