Its almost overwhelming when it comes to the number of Star Wars EU books out there. I've read over 30 of them and I'm still to afraid to venture into the threads because it seems everbody has read the books and the threads are full of spoilers. Have you guys read all of them? I find myself almost making it to the New Jedi Order which has dozens more to its name. Should I venture into this or do you have any other material that you enjoyed the most?

Totally Skippable, read NEC, and you should be fine for LoTF

    EDIT:

    Why?

Bad Writing, Lame Plot, Un-Star Wars Villans, and contradiction of G-canon.

Not really, there is some good stuff. You can skip quite a few, but I'd suggest readin at least Vector Prime, Star by Star, Traitor and The Unifying Force.

Get a case of something caffinated and spend three hours on Wookiepedia. You'll be good to go.

I had a lot of Eu catching up to do, and I plowed through the NJO series at a record pace.....I was basically low on cash (High on Barnes and Noble gift cards) with no consulting gigs to do for a period of time so I just sat around and read. There are a few boring books in the series, but I think they are great. If you are unspoiled completely (As I was) and you can tear through them quickly, I think they are well worth the read.

These are the NJO books I read and the Lit forums helped me with the rest (Wookiepedia wasn't around then).

    Vector Prime
Edge of Victory I and II
    Star by Star
Dark Journey (but this is skipable, I read it as I had it in e-book)
Enemy Lines I and II (I highly recommend these as Allston does them)
    Traitor
    Destiny's Way
The Unifying Force (but you'll only understand it without the Force Heretic series if you've read Rogue planet)

I say it's not skipable as there's A LOT that happens in it that's covered in DN esp with Jacen. Though I am of that small group of people who support Vergere's view of the Force.

Read 'em. The New Jedi Order was the best thing to happen to Star Wars in years. I can honestly say that it's the only group of EU novels that felt and delivered the epicness that the saga is all about.

I'll say. NJO brought me into reading Star Wars novels in the first place.

There's good bits and there's bad bits, some of the political stuff in Enemy Lines is a bit, well..underhanded for someone like Leia but my favourite villain in the EU appears in every single novel virtually.

The one, the only, Nom Anor!

If by 'epic' you mean a bunch of whiney philosophy, then yes, it was freakin' spectacular.

Don't give it just your opinion for someone who is actually looking for advice. It's a good series in of itself and important for the future stories. Even if I didn't love it I would recommend reading it.

Yes, Epic as in unresolved plot, horrible writing at parts, the philosophy contradicting the Movies, spectacular, I dont think they could ruin the EU even if Hambly wrote it ALL, THANKFULLY DN and LotF is "taking out the trash" the NJO created.

    EDIT:
the best part is that the pages of the softbacks are recycled paper so I didnt feel bad caning them. almost made a movie purist outta me

[face_shame_on_you] It's important to read certain books, because they set up a lot of conflicts and characteristics that will play an important role.

NEC covers all that.. or the Power of the Jedi Sourcebook.. tells you all you need about it.

Most of it yes, but there are things you have to experience, otherwise you'll have mistaken views in the future, even if know the story, you have to hear it sometimes to be sure.

Technically there is only 1 major book you really have to read, but if I tell you which I'll spoil future things.

Well before you read a certain character's extremely incorrect POV, you must atleast read the out of universe facts in the PoTJ sourcebook, I have a scan for easy reference.. otherwise you may have mistaken views as well.

    EDIT:

Anyways, as you can see the NJO either inspires some sort of love (or atleast affection) as the series that got people into the EU.. or gut-wrenching hatred for it destroying the previously established EU (and attempting to rewrite the movies).. it seems to me that Del Rey tried to think up ways to destroy Bantam and DH's already established work.

i suggest just reading them all. yes there are a few that arnt that wonderful, but if your a purist like me then they are definetly worth the time. plus most of the books are like 300 pages max usually (cept for the hardcovers) and a quick reader could get through one of those in a little under a week if necessary.

I wasnt gonna name names but yes. :D (I dont wanna get into LOTF spoilers now do I? [face_devil] )

    EDIT:

Mini, you wouldnt be a purist you would be a completist.. Purist = movies only, Completist = read everything.

i personally dont like vergere's view on the force. while it was a good idea at the time and helped in stopping the war, im really glad that luke disbanned the idea.

The NJO is pretty enjoyable, so I would recommend it. I was most excited seeing all of Luke's new Jedi and how his new Order was evolving with it's increased numbers.

Either read all the books or don't read it at all. You can't get away with only reading a fraction. Yeah, you'll "understand" if you supplement with wookieepedia and NEC, but in the same way you'd understand the movies if you skipped AotC and ESB.

19*6.99 = $132.81.. save your money, read the NEC, if you like what read enough to lay out that kinda cash, go for it.
