Google has been providing me with answers both in the positive and the negative...

    EDIT:

I had a teacher who once told me that the pieces of cereal that look "burned" are actually tainted by feces.

No, I don't eat raisin bran.

I suppose my question is whether or not it's true that the pieces of cereal that look burned are indeed tainted and not burned at all.

I haven't found anything skimming the FDA guidelines, but given that they seem to be concerned about dust contaminating packaged food, I think it's safe to say that if you find "feces" in your cereal, you can get someone in trouble for it.

In other words, your teacher was full of **** (not your cereal).

The burnt looking pieces being rat feces sounds like an urban myth but I found a few different websites referencing the acceptable limit of rat hairs and insect parts in food (including cereal). Yum

Yes, but it's not like it's in such great quantities that the cereal needs to be renamed Poopios or Honey Clusters of Poo. The FDA has established acceptable levels of feces in food as a practical measure, since complete sterility of food plants is essentially impossible, but they have set the bar much lower than food producers would prefer (since more stringent standards are more expensive than lax standards).

Quix: So are the "burned" pieces really tainted pieces?

No, they're not. Why wouldn't some of the cereal be accidentally overcooked? That's a far more reasonable explanation.

Forget cereal and have some bread for breakfast instead.
