CT It's always bothered me of how mean Han always was to C3P0.

OK, granted, C3PO was really annoying. Super annoying, even. No one can deny that.

But the fact that Han Solo was always so hard on him always left a bad taste in my mouth. Don't get me wrong, I love Han! He was a great a character who, despite being a shady scoundrel, had a heart of gold. But damn, why did Han always have to treat him so harshly? Goldenrod didn't deserve that. He always meant well. I liked how in the Star Wars radio dramas of the OT, Han was much nicer to him in those! And in The Force Awakens, well, at least Han was nice enough to not verbally chastise him when they ran into each other.

Has this bothered you? Or is it just me?

It hasn't bothered me. In ANH Han isn't really "nice" to anybody. That's just what his character is supposed to be like. He's a rough and rude kind of guy, a smuggler after all. He shoots first and asks questions later. That's just the way he is. He isn't that good with words and diplomacy has no place in his line of work. Look at how he treats Luke and Ben, or Leia. He doesn't take them seriously and looks down on them. "Old fossil" isn't exactly a respectful way to talk about an elderly gentleman, is it? And 3PO after all is just a machine. Is it so strange that someone who doesn't treat living creatures well to be polite to a machine? He only changes at the very end of the first movie. Even in ESB he isn't exactly a gentlemen towards Leia, on the contrary. Think about it. The best he could do emotionally is "I know". He doesn't really pick on 3PO in ROTJ, but is understandably angry with him for not going along with his "playing god" plan. That's why he is "getting back" at him during that translation scene. Otherwise he treats him OK the rest of the movie.

Isn't it the case in Star Wars that droids are not generally thought of as much more than automotons with programming allowing them to perform tasks? That's how they have come across specially from my viewing of battle droids and other droids in the prequels and the way they are represented as in Star Wars comics also.

Suppose also as a sumggler Han Solo is not actually a touchy feely type of person in the first place.

I think the OP has a point, but besides the fact that Han isn't respectful towards anyone much until ROTJ, he shouldn't be singled out for treating Threepio that way. Luke and Leia are seen verbally abusing Threepio as well, albeit not as bad as Han.

The droids in general got the shaft in Star Wars. They're pretty much slaves.

3PO is fully sentient and highly against following these crazy nuts on their improbable adventures and yet he has no say in the matter.

In ANH, Han didn't care for anyone except himself and Chewie. He calls Luke "boy" and "kid" and refers to Obi-Wan as "that old fossil".

In TESB, while Han is NICER, it must be remembered that he (as well as Leia, Chewie, and C-3PO are fleeing the Empire who are literally tailing them). C-3PO is complaining non-stop, even suggesting SURRENDER at one point. It's no wonder Han was pissed. They're running for their lives and the droid is being of absolutely no help at all.

In ROTJ, well, C-3PO did kind of fail to get them out of the situation they were in involving the Ewoks.

Never bothered me a bit. C-3PO is a droid, he doesn't have feelings. And he's damn annoying.

Indeed, he was about to throttle him after Threepio said it wouldn't be proper to pretend to be a deity. He really isn't much nicer to him in ROTJ. He just isn't spending much time insulting him.

3PO clearly has feelings. He expresses joy, fear... pretty much the full range of emotions all throughout the movies.

I didn't think about it, but perhaps that's just because I took it as comic relief in many instances.

That's just because he's programed to. It's not real. It's like your laptop responding to vocal prompts. It does what it's programmed to do.

The same could be said of humans - we're extremely squishy, and our method of programming is a little different - but our brains are still computers of a kind - just biological.

When 3P0 was babbling about not impersonating a deity, Luke raised his voice momentarily before he managed to reassert his Jedi calm.

3PO got his revenge when he babysat Kylo and kept whispering "You hate your father. Your father is a jerk. Your father doesn't love you. You will kill your father. You will kill them all. Your grandfather, my maker, told me his plan. You must finish it." into his ear.

Gotta watch out for that R2 mixing your drinks. He definitely doesn't follow our "wieghts and measures" guidelines here in the UK.

One more and I'd have been under the host.

I remember Luke asking if 3PO could understand the ewoks, but not aggressively. Then after 3PO mentioned he believes the ewoks to think him "some sort of God" Luke didn't say much of anything, and was simply amused by the whole thing.

I'm thinking of a later moment, when Luke told him to threaten to use his magic and 3P0 wanted to refuse. I think Luke was on the edge of losing his patience when he told 3P0, "Just tell them!"
