It's Baaaack - The Return of the Blue Ant Farm :D

Well, a lot of you remember the disaster that was last year's Blue Gel Ant Farm...

Really cool looking, but..due to me not realizing that "when the ants die, their little buddies will carry the bodies to the top of the gel and leave them there;" (quote from instrution book) THAT the instructions neglected to say that I had to REMOVE the "little dead bodies" otherwise they would rot and contaminate the farm.

Welll, it was a distaster of 6" by 8" by 1" porportions...and just ..."EWWWWW"


However, I decided to try it again and now, said new Blue Gel Ant Farm (minus the cool lighting thingy) is a part of my classroom and sits proudly on my desk. I waited a week before posting as I wanted to make sure that I didn't mess it up this time.

So, original count..28 ants..survival count todate 27 ants as one did not survive the initial shipping. There is also one completely torked off ant, as I thought he was dead, but no..sleeping and really upset that he got woke up.

Oh the one hand that is totally and completely cool looking.
On the other hand...I have a complete and total irrational hatred of ants and it only takes like one to get on me before I completely loose it and think I am covered with them and that they are crawling all over me and start scratching and clawing at myself trying to get them all off. Childhood trauma
But I might....just might....be able to handle looking at them in something so cool looking. So long as they belong to someone else

 

I've taken care of a lot of critters in my life...I even had an ant farm many many years ago (most of them died in shipping...note to self: do not order ants in So Cal in August).
Though I'd rather take care of the mice and rats than insects any day. Good luck Master..may your ants live long and prosper....or..something like that.

What's the word on the ants, Master K? Are they still alive? Have they begun tending to their deceased? Is the teaspoon of removal at hand?

 

So far... everyone is still alive and the Holy Teaspoon of Removal has not had to be untilized!!!

Are all the girls still alive? Hopefully they will last till the end of the school year. What do you feed them?

I have no idea how long ants usually live though. I know bees usually live about 2 weeks, till their wings wear out.

 

The little Ant Harem is still alive and doing well. So far..everyone is happy and staying on the BOTTOM of the gel where they have constructed this huge assembly hall type of thing. LOL. Lori, the blue gel is actually food and water as well as habitat. Right now... I think we have a record going. YEA!!!

Good, gooood....And we shall have them all wear little white helmets and armor and march around like good little cannon fodder. *evil grin*
