And from their news page for March 6, 2006:

    Travolta To Play Housewife
Movie star John Travolta is set to display his versatility by playing a housewife in the screen version of Hairspray - his first musical since 1978 film Grease. The 52-year-old actor is preparing to take on the role of Edna Turnblad, alongside Queen Latifah, who will reportedly play Motormouth Maybelle. Producer Michael Lynne says, "This is our dream cast for the film. Bringing Travolta back into a musical is so gratifying. They were our genuine first choices for the film."

    Why?

I'd doubt this unless it's publicized somewhere other than imdb.

A quick google search found another source for the news. I doubt I'd trust this source either though.

    edit:curse you misguided_angel!!

The search also pulled up, of all links, a Yahoo news Singapore story.

    edited again:

Unfortunately, I think this is real, it was in Variety last week.

I guess he'll have a buttload of make-up on. I saw the show on Broadway this past summer and I thought it was fantastic.

Wow. Of all the remakes to do, why in the blue blazes would they do Hairspray?

    What? [face_plain]

    You can't "remake" Hairspray! That's just . . . wrong! It's wrong.

What in the name of Divine are they thinking. NOBODY can play Divine much less Vinny Barbarino . . . or is he Vinny Barbarina now.

    edit

And who would play Debbie Harry's role? Give me a break!

    Idiots!

John Travolta playing a woman? Why do I get the feeling that this will be film whose badness will be exceeded only by Battlefield Earth and Waterworld?

Wow. You'd think Harvey Fierstein, Bruce Vilanch, or even John Goodman would be asked to do the part. Guess not. John Travolta was probably the first person that came to their mind and they thought it was a good idea. This is going to be hilariously bad.

I thought this was a joke at first. Divine and John Travolta are about as 180° from one another as any two people can be.

Hollywood needs to stop making movies for like five years. Then the studios can sit writers in a room somewhere so they can write some original stuff.

Amen, Rox. Didn't need King Kong. Don't need Bewitched, CHIPs, Starsky and Hutch, and countless other remakes. An original thought would be nice. I'm starting to believe Lucas was right in that the budget for movies will trend towards a few million and will garner the greatest success. And those won't be from major studios.

What's John Travolta got to do with The Living End?
