Alrighty, I know Mav's already dished a bit in another thread, but let's get one started for discussion directly related to the new 4-issue series Jango Fett - Open Seasons.

Issue #1 hit the stands today and I picked mine up. While I'm no expert on the whole Mandalorians from Marvel and such, I get the feeling an absolutely HUGE attempt to salvage as much of Boba Fett's previous EU history is being made in this series.

    1) The Mandalorian Jaster Mereel is described as "a reformed murderer" to whom the "true Mandalorians" are "still loyal".

    B) Jaster is "alleged"ly from Concord Dawn.

¾) Jango Fett's father is the current Journeyman Protector, and claims to have not seen Mereel "since he was exiled".

§) Mereel leads a group of Mandalorians against a splinter group called "The Death Watch", which is lead by "a barbarian called Vizsla".

The Death Watch kill all the Fetts (well, maybe a sister got away, but it's implied no one does) except Jango, who escapes with Mereel (who wears the armor Boba Fett eventually wears) and his group. They set up an ambush in a town centre, in which Jango plants a bomb on The Death Watch vehicle and kills Vizsla. Jango is then welcomed to the Mandalorians.

Questions for those more in the know:

    Is Vizsla from another source?

How does all this work with the existing Marvel Mandalorian stuff?

    "Is Vizsla from another source?"

No, I don't think so. However, the Death Watch ARE mentioned in the WEG Imperial Sourcebook. They're from the Mandalore System, and its rumored that the Imperial Royal Guard uniform is based in part on their armor.

"How does all this work with the existing Marvel Mandalorian stuff?"

It doesn't. At least, not yet. The Mandalorians in the Marvel series are basically a police force, as opposed to mercenaries. They're called Mandalorian Protectors, and they fought on Palpatine's side during the Clone Wars, and eventually got wiped out (save for three of 'em) in a post-Clone War battle. The Empire then used their planet, Mandalore, as a slave world.

Which side was Palpatine's side, really?

Good question, Wedge. The comic shows a picture of a guy in a robe (cant really see his face...could be Sate Pestage...Sidious/Palpatine...anyone you want, really) holding a picture of Leia as an "enemy of the empire." Though...it probably isn't Leia, and Fenn Shysa doesnt call her Leia....it could be Padme too, to fit into modern continuity.

All it says is that they went into battle on "the Emperor's side"

Ahh, cool. "Enemy of the empire" probably being the Empire/Republic side then.

No no no. Padme (Its supposed to be Leia, but she isnt named...only a picture is shown) is deemed an enemy of the empire (not the comic) by Palpatine.

    Read carefully you must, Trias.

Then again, I thought you meant someone else when you mentioned "Bona," not Boba.

Hmm.. one thing I didn't like at first was the inside cover, where it says "36 years prior to AotC". At first, I thought it was a mis-print.
The first pages, when Dooku talks to Sidious... he speaks of a vision. That vision takes place well after the events in this issue, I presume? I guess this series shows where Jango got his armor?

I liked the first issue a lot, though. Jango's cool. :D

Here is a picture of a "Vizsla." Its the type of dog I have. Its kind of funny that they would use it as the name of the guy in the comic. Hehehehe.

I picked Open Seasons up yesterday. Having enjoyed the art in Jedi vs Sith, I liked it here as well. I loved the way it fit in with Boba's existing continuity. Apparently Boba takes the armor of Jaster Mareel in a full circle by assuming his name and killing his superior and getting banished. Was the Death Watch referenced anywhere besides the WEG source material? In the beginning, Tyranus mentions a battle where the Jedi wiped out the Mandalorians, all except Jango. Was this referencing the Marvel series?

Jango Fett bio and sources (I don't have Open Seasons yet so please correct me if I made a mistake):
A simple farm boy whose parents have settled on the Outer Rim world of Concord Dawn, Jango?s father is the current Journeyman Protector. The previous Journeyman Protector, Jaster Mereel, is a reformed murderer who was exiled for the deed, but to whom the Mandalorians are still loyal. Jango Fett is orphaned when his family is killed in an uprising by the criminal mercenary band called the Death Watch (a splinter group of the Mandalorians?) which is led by a barbarian named Vizsla. Jaster Mereel leads a group of Mandalorians against the Death Watch; Jango joins the Mandalore Warriors (Mandalorian peacekeepers?), kills Vizsla, and travels with the Mandalorians for a few years. They will continue to be hounded by the Death Watch for a time to come. Jango comes to lead the Mandalorians when Jaster Mereel is killed by ruthless bounty hunter Montross, who mounts the man?s armor in his home.

On the wasteland world Galidraan, the Mandalorians find themselves on the wrong side of a battle when they are employed by a corrupt governor and then implicated in a heinous killing spree. The Republic sends the Jedi to stop the Mandalorians, and the Jedi Knights nearly eliminate their outnumbered opponents. Having no way to prove his innocence, Jango slips away, following an encounter with Jedi Master Count Dooku, and goes into business for himself as a hunter-for-hire.

Jango receives spectacular payoffs for his successes and earns a reputation as the best in the business. He flies a run-down Mandalorian jalopy called the Jaster?s Legacy. Calling himself "just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe," Jango followed no ideologies and accepted jobs from anyone with money. But one private vendetta tortures him--his hatred for his fellow hunter Montross.

Shortly after the Battle of Naboo, Darth Sidious charges Tyranus with dismantling a cult, the Bando Gora, that is interfering with his plan for domination of the galaxy. Tyranus? solution is to hire a number of the galaxy?s most tenacious bounty hunters to dispose of the cult?s leader. Jango and Montross are both hired. During the hunt for this bounty, Jango will confront Montross several times, and eventually walks away victorious. Also during this time, Fett obtains the modified Firespray-class F-31 named Slave I. After dispatching the cult, Tyranus contacts Fett about Clones, and Fett moves to Kamino.

Then, five years later, we?ve got the Jango and Zam GNs, and five years after that AotC.

i loved Open Seasons. interesting that Jaster was he leader of the group. having Boba later don the outfit of Jaster provides a nice link to how he is claimed to be him in Tales of the Bounty Hunters.
    NICE.

obviously Montross is a traitor within the group considering he is currently fighting alongside Jaster's group.

so another question develops...how does boba get the armor of Jaster....does jango hold on to it....or is its location pointed out to Boba by Jango's recorded messages in the Boba Fett series of scholastic books....???

I think this story is great, even though I've accidently spoiled(?) myself on some Episode II material by reading it.

I have to admit I really was lost with this plot, especially the appearance of the real Jaster Mereel, but I knew I'd find answers here. I never saw the parallel with the Mandalorians and the royal guardsmen before, that worked out great. So far this story looks good, and I think I'm even beginning to like the artwork somewhat.
