    Hi,

I've only recently got round to replacing my old VHS copy of The Phantom Menace with the DVD, I'm a bit behind I know but there you go!

Anyway, I was watching it a day or two ago and was excited to finally get to see the 'Air Taxi' scene that's been re-encoperated into the main movie. The scene works well I think but what the hell is Jar Jar Binks saying to Anakin just before the taxi pulls away from the landing platform?

Does anybody know? I must have re-watched that scene about 10 times and I still can't figure out what he's going on about? I've never had much trouble understanding Jar Jar in the past but this scene has got me stumped.

OK, so he's saying that the Queen's being nice but what about the "Pitty Hot" bit? Is he saying that the Queen looks pretty hot? As in very attractive.

I mean, I wouldn't dispute the fact but it seems an odd thing for Jar Jar to be saying doesn't it?

Who knows what he means when he says "pity hot". Maybe he meant it was a little hot on Coruscant (which would be weird because Anakin thinks the opposite, but hey!)

I don't understand half the things Jar-Jar says, so I put the subtitles on.:D

I think "pitty hot" means basically the same thing as "bombad" to the Gungans. I definitely picked up on the possible double meaning that has been mentioned, though. That goofy smile he cracks after he says it can lead one to multiple conclusions.

Or that could be an example of extreme over-analysis on my part.

I thought he said "pretty hot" in his goofy way.

Jar Jar was commenting about the humid conditions on Coruscant. Anakin on the other hand was said it was cold in space not on Coruscant. Although growing up on a desert planet I'm sure Coruscant would be a little chilly to Anakin.

I think he was only commenting about the weather, not the queen.

Hmmmm...no, I'm not buying the 'it's hot and humid on Coruscant' thing. I don't think that's what Jar Jar meant.

I mean, he's talking to Anakin about the Queen being very nice and civil, why would he all of a sudden say 'Pretty hot" in relation to the climate. Besides, the inflection in his voice is all wrong for it to mean this. It doesn't sound like he's moved on to talking about another subject, it sounds connected in meaning to the previous sentence.

Tatooine was too hot for Jar Jar's liking and he said so in fairly understandable (for him) terms as he was leaving the Queen's cruiser with Qui-Gon, R2 and Padme on the way to Mos Espa. If Coruscant was too hot as well surely he'd have said so in a much more understandable way.

Besides, according to most sources Coruscant's climate is 'Tempetate'. Of course, this would vary across the planet's surface (it has frozen poles for instance) but the description of the climate as temperate is certainly consistant with the areas of the planet we've seen in the prequal trilogy.

So, the question still stands. What the heck is Jar Jar going on about?

JAR JAR and ANAKIN start to follow, then stop, noticing that OBI-WAN and
QUI-GON are staying with the SUPREME CHANCELLOR. QUEEN AMIDALA waves to the
duo to follow her. ANAKIN looks back to QUI-GON, and he nods to go ahead.
ANAKIN and JAR JAR join the QUEEN, PALPATINE, PADME, RABE and EIRTAE in the
taxi. PALPATINE gives the Gungan and the boy in the back of the taxi a
skeptical look. JAR JAR leans over to ANAKIN.

JAR JAR : Da Queens- a bein grossly nice, mesa tinks. (he looks around)
    Pitty hot!

VALORUM and the JEDI watch the taxi move off into the city.

QUI-GON : I must speak with the Jei Council immediately, Your Honor. The
    situation has become more complicate

Pitty Hot may be a Gungan expression for pretty cool. :D

    Paris Hilton: That's hot.

Jar Jar: The Queen's being very cool. Pretty hot!

    Not overly difficult, this.

Wow! Comparing Jar Jar to Paris Hilton is just......wrong! Even though Jar Jar is a Gungan, and a animated character at that he still is more human than Paris Hilton.

Seriously, Jar Jar has a heart and soul.

Strictly following the script, Jar Jar thinks Palps is a Queen and thinks thats hot. :p :p

Hot and humid on Coruscant? How can Coruscant be humid when there is no water to be found on the planet?

Well I was thinking more along the lines of slang ;)

    "Ex-squeeze me"
    "How rude!"
"Bombad" (= Bad! as in Cool!)

So, I'm not surprised 'That's hot' (Pretty cool! Pretty awesome! Pretty agreeable! Fairly not-unwell!) is said.
I'm actually surprised people had a hard time with this o_O

The 'pitty bad' is slang for "awesome"

"The Queen is being really gracious, going out of her way to make things nice. Thats awesome" - rough translation as to the general meaning of the sentence Jar Jar speaks.

Fortunately, English is my primary language, therefore I understood and still understand everything Jar Jar said and continues to say in Episodes I, II and III.

I saw something on TV once concerning hearing loss, and I recall it was about the kind of music played in clubs and the volume of the music and how it can damage hearing. One of the things that was said about that is how you will actually lose the ability to discern some syllables, and I cant help but feel this may be happening for some people when listening to Jar Jar.

I'm not saying Jar Jar's strange way of talking is a poor influence on childrens (or adults) vocalisation, but what I am saying is that some people may have some hearing damage that they are unaware of and that is affecting their ability to hear what Jar Jar is saying.

Are you suggesting that I'm losing my hearing?

When I said I put subtitles on, I meant I just use it to help *see* the words he is actually saying. Some people are better visual learners, that is me.

It helps me to see things rather than hear them. I put subtitles on for EVERYTHING I watch, not because I'm going deaf, and can't hear the syllables properly, it's because I like to see the dialouge as well as listen to it.

Mesa thinks its pretty obvious Jar-jar is refering to the
Queen. Imagine if Jar-jar spoke like a regular person:

"I think the Queen is being very nice to you... Its hot out today."
    It doesn't make sense.
Jar-jar was calling the Queen "Pretty Hot".
