Given that Obi Wan wears the flowing brown rustic robes in the original trilogy when he is on tatooine, living off the land and in hiding from the empire, should we not assume that his clothing was not what the Jedi typically wear? And if that is the case, shouldn't we have had jedi knights in some other kinds of clothing?

i read somewhere that some Jedi wore Robes and Tunics designed after the clothes that their Species wore back on their homeworlds, like Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee, Tarr Sier, Etc...

???? He and other Jedi wore brown robes in various shades in the PT. Looks like typical Jedi clothing to me. On the other hand, non Jedi also wore brown robes, so its just fairly typical clothing for everyone.

I read that they wore clothes designed after what the commoners in the galaxy wear. If you'll notice Owen also wears things that are basically Jedi robes. Though originally it seems as if Lucas would have agreed with you as before the Prequels, I remember something about what Luke wears in ROTJ being the Jedi uniform.

The Jedi wear robes designed to look like common clothing items.
Notice than a great many people in the background, in the PT and OT are wearing similar clothes.

It's supposed to make them look humble I guess.

No dirt, no rips, finely tailored humble. Like Armani coveralls.

Yeah, brown robes are like the blue jeans of the GFFA. :D On Tatoonine, they are especially practical.

If thats the case, then how come TC-14 from the Phantom Menace easily identifies Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan as "Jedi Knights"?

I'd assume because of their demeaner, the fact that they were dressed like commoners not diplomats, and the lightsabers hanging on their belts.

Maybe those long cloaks they wear also give it away. And like the above poster said, TC-14 probably noticed the lightsabers.

Originally, Ben's clothing in ANH are supposed to be the typical garments of the natives of tattooine, but the fans kinda decided they were traditional Jedi clothes and it stuck. That's why Yoda's wearing similar clothes in ESB.

If you watch TPM documentaries you'll see they tried to come up with different clothing for the Jedi but unlce George finally figured he should go with the flow about it.

    Hope i helped

Well to call out a Jedi is to see the saber hilt. Other than that, they all look the same.

Obi Wan's clothes in ANH were not meant to be jedi garb, they were the dusty rags of a hermit living in the desert. Notice that Uncle Owen wears the exact same costume! And practically every inhabitant of Tatooine is dressed in something similar, like the Jawas and Tusken Raiders. Yoda also was in a similar situation--he was a hermit, stranded on a bog planet and forced to fashion his own things, like the homespun rags he wears. They were not jedi garb either.

The first flub may have been when Anakin's ghost appears, wearing the same costume as Obi Wan--i dont know if its because Anakin is from Tatooine like Obi Wan or if Lucas just plain forgot.

When designing the PT, the jedi were to wear samurai like body armor--you can even see production paintings depicting Obi Wan in a black uniform that looks nothing like the desert garb seen in the OT.

This was done away with, according to the Art of Episode I book, one of the production designers explains, because it was felt that the audience had to immediately identify that the characters were jedi, and so the artists studied the designs from the OT. Because of course all an audience had seen of Jedi in the OT were Yoda and Obi Wan, everyone kinda forgot that they werent wearing jedi uniform. The jedi were supposed to be more police-like, but i guess Lucas liked the more passifist, religious look the robes gave them.

Zombie, it's a coincidence, but tonight I was watching ROTS, and behind Anakin/Vader as he kneels before Sidious as he is declaring his loyalty to his "teachings", there is a statue that resembles a Samurai warrior directly behind Anakin/Vader. In AOTC and, to some degree, in ROTS, we saw the Sith-looking statues in Palpatine's office. We also clearly saw the freize in the passage to Palpatine's ante-office which appeared to show a battle between Jedi and Sith. Perhaps, as Lucas' vision evolved, the Samurai garb evolved into an archaic version of the uniform of the Sith rather than the Jedi?

farmers on tatooine wear similar clothing. obi-wan blended in so long as no one noticed his lightsaber. also, vader and much of the empire had no business on tatooine, so no one was really looking for jedi there.

The inner robes are common, not the outer robes, which they were wearing at that point.

    i AGREE WITH JediMasterKenobi07

Jedi clothing is cool no matter what. Humble, yet dignified just like the person wearing them.

Except Mace... all he did was bitch about Anakin.

I dunno Mace was dignified, just rather blunt especially where Anakin is concerned.

Mace was dignified, but due to his form 7 Vaapad fighting style that put him close to the dark side, he did tend to be easily angered (for a jedi)

as for the jedi clothes, i guess they have a basic rule for modestness, and it does seem like they base what they wear on their home-world culture, but i have noticed they mostly seem to wear 2 shirt/tunics, then a vestish thing, then they tie it up with some cloth around the waste and then put the belt on. Also, some jedi have been known to wear armor in times of great battle (clone wars, Ulic/Cay Qel Droma, etc.)

In some ways, Luke's ROTJ costume is similar to Jedi robes, especially in the beginning when he wears the wraparound vest over his tunic. He just substituted a cloak for the robe and had it in black.

    Darn snazzy costume, though.

I think it's cool that the Skywalkers seem to be the only Jedi who wear black outfits. You could say Quinlan Vos wears black, but that's when he goes darkside, but other than that he wears brown.

Actually, now that I think of it, Bariss Offee wears black, or is it blue, I can't remember?

Aayla Secura also wears black leather, the jedi don't seem to have a real set uniform that spans to all members of the order, Human Jedi seem to wear the style of outfit Mace, Anakin, Obiwan, and Qui-gon wear with varations of color and texture(i.e. Anakin wearing leather) but non human jedi wear significantly different outfits, Aayla wears a tight leather outfit, Ki-adi-Mundis outer robe is traditional for his people, Adi Gallia and Stass Allie who are human but from corellia wear that headress thing. The interesting thing is that the Zabrak master Agen Kolar wears a outfit very similar to what the elderly Obiwan wears in A New Hope.(the robe witht the longer part that looks almost like a dress)
