Okay,so how exactly can Jedi prevent themselves from having nightmares?Aren't nightmares, and good dreams for that matter, products of our subconscious minds? Is it even possible to control them?

Or was Anakin just a little embarrassed about Padme having heard him and maybe he was just trying to downplay the situation?

Regardless, nightmares are one of the more obvious themes in AOTC.In fact, some of the lesser themes can even be related back to nightmares.Falling from great heights, and being deluged with water are both common nightmare phobias, not to mention monsters, especially ones with exaggerated features, like the Nexu.

We also see no less than 4 characters who get startled awake: Padme,Anakin,Threepio, and Yoda(okay,Threepio only said he had a bad dream, not that he was asleep, and Yoda seemed more like he was in some kind of meditative state, but you get the picture). There's also the Tusken who was awakened when Anakin emerged from the hut. Then there was that creepy scene where the Geonosians emerged from the walls and attacked Anakin and Padme, that seemed pretty nightmare-ish.

Even the wedding scene at the end had a bit of a nightmare-like quality to it.Here you have this beautiful scene, and all of a sudden there's this one hideous thing which appears(Anakin's arm).I think that scene still creeps a few people out when they see it.

    Sorry for rambling.Any thoughts?

Oh, I really like the analysis of the nightmare theme throughout the movie, Idgie! Makes a lot of sense to me. I think somewhere in the back of my mind I've always had an unsettled feeling while viewing this movie. That seems to truly hit on why. You continue to amaze, my friend!

My take on Anakin's comment was that he was indeed embarassed that Padme brought up such a personal thing. Whether OTHER Jedi have nightmares or not we could debate, but it seems pretty obvious that Anakin did.

    Regards,
    M.

A taste of things to come maybe? Let's not forget about Luke's dream sequence in empire. A family trait?

Well, really, what is a dream? There is a very fine line between meditaion, and dream state. Zen masters would drink a lot of tea, to keep them from slipping over into dreams (keeps them awake). When Luke is on Hoth, after the Wompa, and after seeing Ben... he's rambling on about having to go to Dagobah. Is that a dream, or some other kind of thing?
Here's what the dictionary says about dreams:
1.A series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.
    2.A daydream; a reverie.
3.A state of abstraction; a trance.
    4.A wild fancy or hope.
5.A condition or achievement that is longed for; an aspiration: a dream of owning their own business.
6.One that is exceptionally gratifying, excellent, or beautiful: Our new car runs like a dream.

There are people that can cross over between the concious and unconcious states of mind, and can control parts, or all of their dreams.

Yeah, there was definitely a good amount of nightmare/dream imagery in ESB as well.Luke babbling about Dagobah,Luke falling at Bespin, and also when he wakes up in the bacta tank(which goes back to finding oneself submerged in water as a nightmare motif).

There are some who are able to slip back and forth between the conscious and unconscious mindset, but that would imply an act of will on the dreamer's part.Anakin admitted(to Obi-Wan) that he had no idea why he kept dreaming of his mother,so it would seem to me that he was not in control of that part of his brain.

I think in the case of Anakin dreaming about his mother.. they were probably vision of the future to come. One wonders if Anakin had left when he first started to see them if his mother would have lived. I wonder if in the future he will blame Obi-Wan for this. Obi did say that this will pass in time.

As for Anakin's dream about his mom... I figured it was because he was so strong in the force, that it was just a repitition of things to be. Or maybe it was the midiclorians playing a trick on him. :)

    Lava,

I think Anakin already does blame Obi-Wan. Remember the scene in the garage? He says: "It's all Obi-Wan's fault." Yes, he's talking about his growth as a Jedi to some extent, but from the first viewing, I always took that to mean he was angry for not following his own dreams earlier for the exact reason you mention. Perhaps Shmi would have lived if he'd gotten to her earlier.

    Just my take. :)

    M.

LOL Lava I think Mirax got confused by our symbol being the same. I didn't think anyone else took the Falcon. I'm thinking of changing it to Han.

jedi dont have nightmares simply strikes me as - " a force sensitive doesnt have nightmares or dreams...they have visions, some offer advice while others grant omens"

i also agree with anakins placing blame on obi wan...i believe the nightmares began the moment his mom was taken by the tuskens. the more you grow in the force the more you become aware to ripples in the living force.
