    Jedi Shadows

Jedi Secret Police responsible for finding and defeating the dark side being part of the Jedi order from before the Exar Kun Wars all the way until the Purge.

Why haven't we heard more about these Shadows?

I wasn't aware of them until I read the KOTOR Handbook

A KOTOR trilogy about a Knight being trained as a Jedi Shadow has lept on to my top 5 stories that need to be told list.

The first time i heard of a jedi shadow was when i read the unofficial kotor d20 sourcebook. I'm not sure i like the concept or not. It seems a little big brother like for star wars.

I love the Jedi Shadow concept. I'd be interested in seeing more specialized Jedi of all stripes.

Imagine a Traitoresque novel in which a Jedi Knight is subjected to all kinds of dark side stuff, trips to Korriban, torture, etc. This is all controlled Jedi training so the Jedi will know the dark side and be able to resist it.

You have an easy set up for a rampaging Jedi, as well as all kinds of Dark and Sith opponents set in almost any era.

What would the Jedi Master's in charge of this progam be like. Yoda must have been somehow involved given his tenure with the Jedi order and the fact that Maw was a Jedi Shadow...

    I want it now...

It'd be cool if the Covenant was revealed to be Jedi Shadows.

For some reason I think it'd be cool if Kota ended up being a Jedi Shadow.

I always assumed they were largely synonymous with the Sentinels.

A Jedi Secret Police tasked to seek out and destroy any sign of the dark side?

    Er...

Am I the only one very bothered by this idea?

    Bothered or intrigued...[face_thinking]

Done right the Shadows could be really cool. They would need some explanation.

I find it really out of character for the Jedi Order for sure because the idea seems so extreme.

Fools, the lot of them. If they spent less time with that Dantooinian husband droid and actually immolating manufacturing plants like Korriban and cousins there'd be no phantoms to flirt with you. [face_shame_on_you]

You mean more than a group of magicians with swords delivering summary justice according to the precepts of their religion alone?

I agree with the Wookiepedia. If there have ever been Jedi Shadows in the EU, it would be the Jedi Covenant. Unfortunately, theirs is a case of taking their job too seriously, too passionately, and way too far.

Well, they're not exactly secret police. They're just a unit of Jedi assigned to keep on watch against the dark side. It's no worse than police having anti-drug task forces or anti-organized crime task forces.

The secret police part being wrong does make it far less objectionable.

It's the secret part that borrows me, I'm thinking of the mage slayers in Diablo II.

Well, to be frank, I'm not sure how secret they're supposed to be.

Are we going to find out that they're Normal Jedi by Day...Batman by night?

    I doubt it.

I think they're more public about what they are but operate in secrecy as to say "HEY! Dooku, I understand you're dabbling in evil!"

I'd love to see the story of one of these guys going after some real Dark Side sickos. Not your average Dark Jedi, mind you, but something like a Joruus C'boath with more freedom, or Palpatine with less patience, or the Joker.

There we go. Characters that, if not for the Force, would fit right in at Arkham Asylum. Sic our Jedi Shadow on these types. Have them delve into the seamy undercities of Coruscant and Nar Shadaa, the dank tombs of Korriban and Dantooine. Show us the side of the Dark Side that Lucas doesn't want us to see in his polished little Universe.

We already have darksiders like Kaan going insane and Bane killing innocents for maximum dark side points... I don't think that it would be a really big step for the "polished little Universe".

While I agree that such stories (TOTJ/KOTOR Jedi hunting down darksiders) could be really great, I'd like to point out that it doesn't seem to be rather a novel idea, either. In Shatterpoint, Mace is going after Depa/Vastor. In Enemy Lines, Luke and posse go into dangerous Vong territory to eliminate a darksider (as if that were the only trouble...). So the idea of light Jedi cleaning out the closet of the Force is there all along. Also, notice how the Jedi are sometimes the first to ignite their lightsabers in the movies - they know what to do when encountering the dark side.

BTW, I think that EU has brought up lots of moral issues with Jedi, good and bad that don't really appear in the movies. The movie Jedi seem to be more about fun and adventure than your typical warrior monks would be. See Kit smile. EU is approaching the issue more strictly, asking the question for right and wrong more often. (Then again, EU is a bit more lax when it comes to Jedi marriage...) In the end, I think Lucas started off with a moral tale and then went on to make a hell of an adventure story out of it. EU then started with that adventure and now tries to fit in the moral context...

In the KotOR handbook, the Covenant are compared with "earlier" Jedi Shadows, but also contrasted with them: rather than going after the Sith with official sanction, they're a "covert" group trying to pre-empt their return; I think that probably implies a formal difference between the two groups, but it may simply indicate a change of approach...

Would Quinlan Vos qualify as being a Jedi Shadow?

    With Tholme as his supervisor.

I Think the description fits quite well.

Maybe, but I had the impression that Quinlan prefered doing his own thing.
