Reading my Visual Dictionary and latest SW Insider, they stated the fighters we see Obi-Wan and Anakin fly in RotS are Jedi Interceptors. Is there a difference between the words 'interceptor' and 'starfighter' in this case, as are they being used to classify these ship's types or is there no difference? It's reasonable to think there may one, because we see Plo Koon flying a Jedi Starfighter in RotS. At the time, I thought why he would be flying an out-dated model, but when I saw how they were named differently, I thought, "Oh, maybe it wasn't outdated after all".

Well..I'd say the change from 'starfighter' to 'Interceptor' mostly reflects the change from basically peacekeeping operations (starfighter) to wartime missions (Interceptor, designed expressly for dogfighting & other such activities).

I was meaning the classifications. Is the Jedi Starfighter the official term for both of them or is it just meant for the one in AotC.

The official in-universe designations are Delta7-Aethersprite for the fighter introduced in AOTC, the designation for the new fighter in ROTS is Eta-2Actis-Interceptor.

The Aethersprite has larger, has shields, is lightly armed (two twin-laser-cannons) and a much higher acceleration (10,000 G).

The Eta-2Actis is much smaller, has no shields or heavy sensor-equipment, is more heavily armed (two larger laser-cannons, two ion-cannons and - according to some sources - torpedos), but the acceleration is lower (5,600 G), but still superior to that of Tri-Droids or Vulture-Droids.

As DarthBoba said, the first is better suited for scouting-missions and peace-time-activities, while the second is better suited for fighter-combat.

It seems kinda odd that they would take the shields away from a fighter designed for dogfighting.

In the real world, Interceptors are generally faster, smaller and more manuevrable craft. The F-16 Falcon, for instance, is supposed to be an interceptor, as are F-5s. F-14s & F-15s, on the other hand, are more of fighters.

A Galactic Civil War parallel would be x-wings (fighters) versus a-wings (interceptors) or TIE interceptors (...).

Not, if you consider how small the fighter introduced in ROTS is.

Some people still refer to the Interceptors as Jedi Strafighters though. Is it just a common habit?

    Yeah, probably.

Anyone else think the Interceptor is the coolest-looking ship ever?

Definitely; they look even cooler because of the brilliant cinematography at the beginning of Sith. Best. "Star Wars." Opening. Ever.

Oh, actually...'coolest ship' for me also goes to Venator-class Star Destroyers.

I still strongly voice the opinion that the Interceptors are among the goofiest looking ship designs in all of sci-fi. If only they hadn't gone with the oversized Hasbro cockpit it might have looked pretty cool.

As it is, I've yet to see the fighters at any angle that makes them look remotely cool. The Clone Wars cartoon is probably the only source to even approach making them look less fugly.

The toy Jedi Starfighter is pretty cool in its "attack mode." The only problem is those long guns on the sides, which look a lot worse in the Toys 'R' Us comic.

Even cooler is the Cruise-missile Trooper from the Power of the Force II line of toys. It even looks like the direct discendent of the Delta series and is probably a KDY creation.

Yeah the Attack Mode starfighter was pretty cool- a shame the interceptor wasn't, given the similarities.

I wasn't a big fan of the Eta 2's design when it first hit the net, but it's really grown on me. The toy is awesome.

Hey! My brother used to have one of those! But then we sold it in a garage sale. Was that a bad idea?

They are actually air superiority fighters, though both operate in the interceptor role.

    >>The toy is awesome.<<

I agree- the Eta-2 in toy form isn;t too shabby, because we expect the overized cockpit. The trouble is the real thing looks like that too ;)

    No shields?

By the triple teats of Doellin, as Ree-Yees said before babbling that absolute culinary garbage to Gartogg the Gamorrean, the bubble-canopy fighter that 2ndQuest dislikes has no shields?

I'm all for fallicies adding depth to things, but like the Jedi entering the Yinchorr system in unarmed ships, not idiocy. [face_not_talking]

Well, it makes sense. The cockpit is so big, there is no room for a shield generator. Same thing with TIEs later. they hae roomy cockpits, but in most cases, no shield generators.

War! as the opening scrawl exclaims. In war you don't fly shieldless toys.

But they're specifically designed that way. You expect the Rep's principle combatants to be more armed.

I almost gagged when I read Acts of War, and the dramatic danger the Consular cruisers were in. Going to fight an aggressive race in unarmed ships---especially when there are armed models of them. NEGVV says they have a few banks of turbos and torps. We saw some in Stark Hyperspace and Hunt for Aurra. And if not Consulars, there are other armed ships in both AOW and Stark.

This Jedi abhorrence to sensibility makes them exceedingly hard to empathise with as they face extinction.

I quite like the design of the Jedi Interceptor.

The opening shot of RotS sold me on it.

Depends. If you're a collector, the Cruise-missile trooper is kinda hard to find in box (I think.) The extra info on the box was interesting, but not necessary. The vehicle has only been featured in toy form and its not like its a necessity for anything; I just like it 'cause it looks cool. IIRC, it was based on a discarded Transformers design.

    Unfortunately, I don't have one. :(
