One interesting thing I noticed about the PT and OT is the extent of Jedi training. In the PT, Anakin becomes Obi Wan's Padawan, and 10 years later is still a Padawan. In the OT, Luke is trained in, relatively, a very short period of time. I wonder what kinds of things it would take more than 10 years to teach a Jedi, but which Yoda never taught Luke due to the circumstances (i.e. an extremely urgent need to make someone a Jedi to go save the galaxy). There must be enormous amounts of stuff about the Force that the PT Jedi knew which Luke never does. (Like, for example, how to block Sith lightning--which Obi Wan knew how to do and Luke would undoubtedly have found to be usefull information to have.) Luke left before Yoda wanted him to in ESB, but when he returns to finish his training in ROTJ Yoda says he's done and now all he has to do is confront Vader to become a Jedi. So how do you condense over a decade's worth of training into such an incredibly short period of time? Anyone have any input?

Well this is probably better off in SW Misc.

Anyhoo, I think there is less to teach because there is no Jedi Order. There are no rules: only the Force, a Lightsaber, and a last hope (sorta). Luke was probably tapping into the Force his entire life. He just needed Yoda to help him control it. Also, it's clear they didn't do much lightsaber training with Luke...

Like you said, I think the necessities were all rolled into one short training period due to the severity of the situation. Yoda and Obi-Wan taught Luke just what he needed to bring Anakin back from the Dark Side, enabling him to kill Palpatine.

True. I didn't think of that, but I guess all the training Luke really needed was enough to handle that particular situation. After Vader and Palpy were taken care of, there'd be more time to go into other stuff. In the PT, though, the Jedi would need lots of training to be able to handle anything that came up.

Don't forget the age difference. Anakin becomes a Padawan at a very young age, whereas Luke's Jedi training happens when he is an adult. Perhaps the young need much more attention when using the Force than adults do. Besides, there wouldn't be a 10 year old Jedi anyway.

True Luke would be able to learn faster than a kid. Yoda probably just taught him the basics he would need to beat Vader.

I always find it interesting that Luke continues to use a blaster until late in Empire. Even then, he likes to use blasters quite a bit compared to the Jedi in the PT.
His first fight with a saber is against Vader (the wampa doesn't count)! Talk about a challenge! Vader abused him quite a bit in that battle, so it was a wonder that Luke even survived. It would be interesting to see if Luke continued to carry a blaster after ROTJ.

He never carried one in ROTJ, so I doubt it. By that stage, he'd presumably advanced enough in his studies that he didn't need a blaster anymore. Note that he doesn't try to deflect the stormtrooper's and Boba Fett's bolts in TESB; this was a skill he picked up after Empire, I think.

When I look at it, it does look like Luke gets shafted. He really doesn't know much or get much experience compared to the PT Jedi. And that's right about his first lightsaber battle being against Vader--who is presumably the best there is as Palpy chose him for an apprentice and he defeated all the other Jedi who would've tried to stop him. That must've been really tough never having fought anyone before. (Though he did get beat up pretty badly and Vader did let him live.)

In the end, though, I think he turns out to be a decent Jedi and very skilled, even if not as knowledgeable as the PT Jedi.

Luke's a decent jedi. His skills will sharpen over time...

much of the stuff that the jedi learned in the PT era were probably also diplomatic behaviour and studying of different cultures and so on. To be a jedi was first and foremost to be a negotiator and a diplomat, and "keepers of the peace". None of that luke had to learn because
a, it wasnt nessessary at the time, and
b, he could learn that stuff elsewhere.

Apentize I agree with you there is probably a lot of history , languages, geography and learning of different cultures that goes on. There is also probably taining how to fly a speeder and space ship.

Another interesting point is that the little kid Liam, can manipulate things like the blinds where Luke can not push the button with the force when facing the rancor. I think a good jedi would be a cross between Luke and Leia. Leia has the political side of things which PT jedi were taught. Persoanlly I thik that Luke had a poor control of the force and was taught the basics to not turn to the darkside and turn Anakin back.
