Is anyone else a fan of Kanye West? His debut LP "College Dropout" is the best album of 2004 thus far and is probably the best pure hip-hop LP to be released in several years. While the majority of hip-hop/rap artists these days rhyme about cars, girls, and money, Kanye is a breath of fresh air on the musical scene with his unique beats and soulful lyrics, all of which have a variety of meanings behind them.

While I haven't got the CD, I have heard a few tracks off it and I have to agree. The majority of today's hip-hop is garbage, like Dash said, about girls, cars, and money; stuff most people can't relate to.

And his beats are incredible. I guess he's been producing for a while even though I haven't heard anything I know of untill recently.

    GO BUCKEYES!

I haven't seen the video for Jesus Walks, but it was such a good song, the very first time I heard it, I went straight home and downloaded it off the internet without paying him any royalties! :D

Actually its the 2nd one which is better, because he wasnt happy with the 1st. 2nd one is the one with the car chase, and KKK guy burning. Infact there is also a third video, low budget like Through The Wire was.
Kanye just did a Jesus Walks remix with Mase, and a Welcome Back remix with him. Both good mixes.

I have the Jesus Walks remix, but I had no idea there was a Welcome Back remix with Kanye floating around out there. I'm definitely going to track that one down.

Love Kayne West, his work with Dilated Peoples was pretty damn good. He's got a lot of good beats and rhymes on his own too. ;) Very cool.

When an artist this good comes along and puts out such a quality album, I make it a point to go out and buy it. The least they deserve is $15 for giving me so much, but hey that is just how I feel.

I don't like it when he says "the White Man," like everyone light-skinned denies black people their eqality in society. Other than that he's very talented, but I think Nas' style is close to his without the r&b influence, which I have never liked in Kanye's music.

On a side note, does anyone out there share my absloute disgust with J-Kwon?

From one of the few people who truly love hip hop on these boards, damn that reminds me I gotta go dig up my thread, I loved Kanye's beats off the Blueprint and Blueprint 2. He really laced Jay with some beats to make his tracks sizzle. As an upcoming rapper, I've heard him quite a bit and Jesus walks is probably my favorite song right now. My one main beef with Kanye West is that he is too played out. He is all over MTV, every commercial radio station that plays hip-hop music, commercial radio stations that play pop music and cross over and play hip-hop too, everywhere. It's sad that a man like Kanye, with so much talent and great beats and lyrics is having his music oversaturating the market. I love the guy, and I have his CD, College Dropout, which I agree is one of the better albums of 2004, although y'all better watch out for my man Esco's new joint dropping in Sept. (14th, I believe) I expect that to be a hot album. So, IMO, Kanye West would be a lot better if all the commercial radio stations/MTV didn't ride his jock like they ride Eminem's jock. Eminem is quite a talented rapper, if you've ever heard his underground battle rapping, you know what I mean. However, with MTV and every commercial radio station playing his "hits" it really makes me not be able to stand a great song, because I hear it literally every 20 minutes. The song just gets played out. And I just feel that unfortunately for Kanye, his ish is getting played out commercially way too much.

EDIT: Artists like J-Kwon represent all that is wrong with rap music. Dude comes along, gets laced with a catchy beat, and gets paid. Dude has less rap talent in his whole body than Nas' has in one cell of his body. I think some of the problems that are inherent in rap music have to do with good beats. Random artist sings song about cars/guns/sex/money/nothing/mindless drivel over an awesome beat and all of a sudden the youth of America are bopping their heads along to it and random artist is the next platinum rapper. I wish it actually took talent to be a successful artist in any genre really, but especially rap. Unfortunately for hip-hop, it gets a bad name from rap music no-talent hacks ruining a genre. Nasty Nas needs to take his throne as the King of New York and run the hacks out of town.

The thing i hate most about Kanye is using the same samples on different songs. Its lazy and the music sounds repetetive. BTW look out for New World Symphony by Pharoahe Monch, its produced by Kanye and violins by Miri Ben Ari (the violinist from Overnight Celebrity). Its dope.

Nas' double album Street's Disciple is going to be the best album this year. So far we've heard; On The Real, Star Wars, Thief's Theme, You Know My Style, Good Morning and Street's Disciple freestyle, this year. All fire, and no one is as consistant as that. SOHH.com (whos editors dislike Nas) have even admited the album is a banger. Street's Disciple, classic double album, cop it 28th September.

I respect Kanye a lot...i think if i would have been in a car crash and broke my jaw that i wouldnt have made a song right after it...i have the first version of Through The Wire and man does he sound hurt in the song...

If i had to pick any rappers to be the best of '04 it would either be him or Jay-Z
