The Making of The Empire Strikes Back (2010) reveals that Kashyyyk, then known as "Kazzoook", was in George's notes for ESB. What was his plan for Kashyyk in ESB and why did it ultimately get moved to the Holiday Special?

Interesting! I think "Kazzoook" would have made more sense as a concept for ROTJ...

I don't know. I think that it was one of the ideas for the garden planet, where Lando lived. Hoth was there from the start.

No, the "garden planet" was something else. It was where the Rebels regrouped after escaping Cloud City in the finale of the Leigh Brackett script, as well as in Lucas' early story outline that she worked from. Lucas' outline describes it as having "twin suns low on the horizon", but Brackett's script changed this to multiple moons to avoid a repeat of Tatooine.

Incidentally, the "garden planet" was called Besspin-Kaalida in Brackett's draft, while Cloud City was "Hoth" - which Han says means "cloud" in the language of the native species - and the "Ice Planet" was unnamed.

Earlier spellings of the "garden planet" name in Lucas' notes included "Bestpenkoluta" and "Bestpenkoleta", suggesting that Lucas originally intended the name as a tip of the hat to one of his favorite comic-book artists. ("And the award for Best Pen goes to... Michael Kaluta!")
