Rating: G for everyone Author: Hopefulwriter Time Frame: In the original trilogy Characters: Ben Solo.....others Ben Solo’s footfalls joined the other kids’ as they ran down the hall of the temporary Rebel Base to the makeshift school, sounding like a stampede. “Come on, Ben, the bells ringing.” His friend Gio yelled. “I’m running as fast as I can!” Ben replied breathlessly. Soon, all had entered the school room and plopped into their seat just before the teacher, Educational Tech Norda, walked through the door, closing it behind her to drown out the sounds of engines, power grids and a myriad of other noises. She was in rebel issue clothing and her dark grey hair was plaited into a long rope. Her teal-colored eyes missing nothing as the children wiggled and squirmed in their seats, as six-year olds are known to do. “Today, we will be talking about family. Norda said as she took her place behind her desk. “We will do a short essay.” Gio raised his hand, “What is a essay.” “An essay.” She corrected. “Is writing about a particular subject and today the subject is family.” Whispering began among the children. Norda clapped her hands and the kids directed their attention back to her. “I want you to write a few words about your family. I know some of you are from different planets and have different lifestyles and it will be interesting to hear about them. “I don’t know everything about my family…I’m only six years old.” Complained Igal Natum. The light green haired boy fidgeted. “That’s all right, Igal. Just write what you know up to now. Tell about your parents, your bothers and sisters, if you have them….Do you have a pet? Do you have special customs at your home? Has a special thing happened to you?. That will give you some ideas.” She finished as she sat down. “What if we can’t spell the words we want to say?” Questioned Ben Solo. Norda smiled. “Just do what you can. Now, take out your pens and papers and begin. I’ll ask some of you to read your essays after the morning break.” A room-full of little heads bowed as they began to do their school work. Quiet, except the sound of scribbling, filled the room until the break ring, from Norda’s small, desk chronometer. “Everyone finished?” She asked rising from her seat. “I still got to write one word.” Igal said urgently. Norda smiled. Igal put down his pen with a great sigh… “Enjoy your break…leave your papers on your desk, don’t anyone bother another’s paper.” Norda stood by the door, directing the children to the make-shift inside playground that many rebels created for them. Kids had a lot of energy to burn off! *** With laughter and shuffle of feet, the children reentered the schoolroom. Still not ready to settle down, some of the boys began throwing hand-formed paper X-wings across the room. “That how a JedI flies.” Ket-ket jumped from his seat, his 4 arms flailing as he ran around the room; yelling ‘Boom’ ‘Boom’. Norda entered the room…. “Now that you’ve won the battle, Ket-ket, please take your seat.” The red-faced boy walked quietly to his seat, retrieving his ‘X-Wing’ from another student. “Now,” Norda began, “Snaduu, please stand and read your essay.” The young girl rose, standing beside her desk, “I have a father, a mother and a grandmother. My sister’s name is Winnie, she is three solar years old. We have a room to ourselves. I like living here, but not when there are bombs.” Norda’s heart hurt for these children being in the middle of the conflict…a conflict that was necessary for their future freedom. “That’s fine.” Nord encouraged. “Who wants to be next?” She asked. Not one hand was raised. She smiled. “Igle, read us your story.” “I will, but it isn’t done.” He stated as he rose, his paper shaking in his hands. “I live on a rebel base. I have a mom and a dad. They are techs…mom a numbers tech and dad a work on machines tech. I have a little sister, but I haven’t seen her yet. Mom has to carry her in the pouch for a long time so she can grow. The………” Silence……. “Is that it?” Norda asked. “No.” “What is the word you want to say?” Norda questioned. “That’s the word I didn’t have time to write.” Igle answered. “What was it?” “….End.” Pursing her lips not to laugh, Norda praised; That is a good story.” Igle sat down with a sigh of relief. “Now, how about your reading your essay, Ben.” Norda directed He rose slowly, confidently (after all, he WAS a Solo.) stood for a moment then, began to read. “I live with my mom and dad…I don’t have any brothers or sisters. I want to be a JedI. I like to fly in my dad’s ship. I asked him one time about him and mom.. he told me he was Corellian and mom was a Alderrani………and he said I was inquisitive!!” * Norda rolled her eyes…this was going to be a long school year. Hi Earlybird, Thank you for taking time to read KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS. Your comments are always welcome and encouraging. Lynda V.
I teach Sunday school to young kids and my favorite theory from one was that Moses was a Jedi. This made me think fondly of brutally honest kids and laugh.
Hi DarthIshtar, appreciate you taking time to read KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS. I teach a women's Sunday School class and do they have stories of their children and grandchildren. Love the 'Moses as a Jedi." statement. Lynda V.
Lol, I used to teach that kind of class in college years and a coed class for adults as well. I sometimes have too much fun remembering such discussions. I also have nieces and nephews who have been known to ask me things like, “auntie, when I go to college, can you teach me how to put my shoes on?” (Nephew in question was 4. He’s 14 and now knows you don’t have to wait until college for such skills.). I would read Star Wars kids saying the darnedest things all day. I once wrote something like this about the Solo twins and Jaina saying her grandpa blew up her other grandpa.
Stumbled upon this while looking back through old threads and I adore the kids at school. Very precious bunch. Good assignment too.
