I thought I would start a thread to discuss our friend Doriana. I think Zahn did a great job developing him, and I figured we could get a nice discussion going about him. Here's some information:
    CUSWE: http://theforce.net/swenc/search.asp?t=kinman+doriana&EandD=EyDn&e=&s=&c=&p=&a=&no=10
    Wookieepedia: http://starwars.wikicities.com/wiki/Kinman_Doriana

Let's start off with some basics, but not be limited to these questions: Why didn't Palpy tell him? When did Palpy tell him? What is Kinman's fate? What do you think of his personality (IE his feelings during the Outbound Flight incident)? Overall an interesting character that could lead to an interesting discussion.

Well Kinman survived the Clone Wars but Mara said

"Helped Engineer Palpatine's rise to power."

It also said that he intended to replace Kinman with Darth Vader, Mara, and Thrawn

While Parck is an idiot for that statement, its clear that Kinman dies fairly quickly after the events of the Clone Wars.

Its also obvious Doriana wasnt a major part of the Sidious plot.. since the didnt know that for both his jobs we worked for the same boss.. I would say a high level agent for Sidious/Palps.. but not a particularly important or trusted one.. such as Pestage..

Parck was an idiot.. or rather was trying to suck up to Mara as part of his recruiting.. inflating some peoples importances

Actually, the statement makes a lot of sense.

Doriana = handyman/problem solver. He's the guy Palpatine/Sidious relys on to get various important jobs done, often under the table.
Jade = Emperor's Hand, between communications and training, she was meant to go after criminals, Rebels, and corrupt Imperials, outside the normal lines of Imperial Command
Vader = besides his role as a Sith Apprentice, he was tasked with hunting down Jedi, Rebels, and dealing with traitors, again, usually outside the chain of command
Thrawn = non-human admiral with a penchant for brillian tactical and strategic plans. Later sent to the unknown regions to expand the Empire, again outside the direct chain of command. The rest of the Admiralty had no clue what he was doing, and thought he was exiled.

It wasn't a statement about how important the characters in question were, but the specific role they played. All four did the same thing- preformed a specific task or set of tasks for the Emperor, reporting to him personally, outside the chain of command, and most often either under the table or above the law.

Other characters such as Dangor, Pestage, Greatus, or Aloo may have known more, but they played different roles, more advisory and governmental jobs than what Doriana did.

Doriana seemse to be Sidious's point man, his top operative in the field. He's very highly placed in the Sith organization, maybe not so much in Palpatine's administration. It's also suggested that Doriana wasn't told because he simply didn't need to know, and he enjoyed playing "the game" -- it made him better. If he isn't going to be loyal, better you have him betray you to . . . you.;)

What I really want to know is -- was he recruited by Sids and "inserted" into Palpatine's office, or was he working for Palps and approached to turn traitor for Sidious?

Hmmm... I don't know if Zahn would ever do something like this...but maybe Doriana will feature prominently in Allegiance....

Palpatine brought him with him from Naboo, so who knows how long he also worked for Sidious as well...

He didn't seem very bright, at least not in the military department, from the spoilers I've heard from Outbound Flight.

He sounded to be very much like a weasel in the bargain.

According to Wookieepedia (which I presume got its info from those publications) he has brown hair (and the picture shows him balding) and he's from Naboo.

    IIRC, his eyes are green.

He's no Sate Pestage or Ars Dangor, both of whom knew exactly who Palpatine really was.

The Wookiee pic is him during the Clone Wars.

So, I'd guess he's born around 75 or so BBY.

He's no Sate Pestage or Ars Dangor, both of whom knew exactly who Palpatine really was.

Correct. He's more on the Nute Gunray level.

He's described as "young" in Outbound Flight...he probably balded early. ;)

Yeah? Well, I guess he's in his late 20s in OF, then, making him in his thirties or so by Clone Wars...

Where is it said Ars Dangor knew that Palpatine was a Sith? As far as I know, the last time Dangor was mentioned the distinction between Sith and Dark Jedi hadn't been made yet.

Death Star Technical Companion. Dangor also dresses like Palpatine, in those happy black robes. :p

Thanks, all. I know someone who probably balded still in his teens. It was quite a surprise when he whipped that chef's hat off. All chef hats look ridiculous, but that's not the point.

I always pictued Dangor as wearing one of those Egyptian headgears the Pharoahs wore.

I wonder how Doriana died anyways? Did he do something to serious p.o. Sidious or Vader?

Or was he got in the crossfire of someone elses' dispute?

And like I said, DSTC came out before it was revealed what a Sith actually was.

The DSTC (one of my favorite reference books, BTW) doesn't say that Dangor knew Palpatine was a Sith. It does hint at something like that, though, with lines about Palpatine being two wrapped up in thoughts far above that of normal humanity. He may not have known about the whole Sith thing, but he apparently did understand that Palpatine was more than a politician, unlike Doriana.

    >Thanks, all. I know someone who probably balded still in his teens. It was quite a surprise when he whipped that chef's hat off. All chef hats look ridiculous, but that's not the point. <

Yeah, I have a friend who is balding already, and he's my age.

He was American, what did I expect?

Get a load of this, he bounces up to me, whipping off his hat. I swallowed my shock. Guess you didn't think I was bald, huh? Huh? Guess how young I am, he insists. Go on, guess. 30, I ventured. No! 23 he beams at me . . . Don't worry, he assures me. The sexiest men in Hollywood are bald.

    . . . okay.

Which could be true, you know. I've seen so many sumo women happily married to thin men, I don't know what to believe anymore. People eating buffalo excretement from the intestines because it's a delicacy in Laos and they need to appear trendy.

Doriana dies in the book doesn't he? That's what Parck said to Jade in VOTF. How did reading the book affect the tension, knowing he wasn't going to live?

    What do you mean?

Parck said Doriana dies. I know C'baoth must die in some way. I know the mages must die. I know the survivors will reach that planetoid. I know whatever harm or death Kenobi and his boy will face will be fake tension. I know Zahn copies his characters from different books with a name change. I know the writing will rigid and repetitive.

I already know the lot, it seems.

Do tell me, how am I supposed to read this? [face_batting]

Doriana dies . . . but must it be here? Reread HOT, my friend. C'Baoth dies, but how? And what is the gentleman actually like? Who actually does reach the planetoid, why, and how? Kenobi and Skywalker may not be in danger -- but others may, and their undertakings may fail. As to the last, I'd contest that statement. YOU DON'T KNOW IT ALL. It's about the journey, you psychotic southerner.:p
