Kyle Katarn's lightsaber

Okay, maybe this has been retconned somewhere, or maybe even an official explanation, but my question is the one that probably floats on everyone's mind when they think of the phrase "Kyle Katarn's Lightsaber".

In Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, Kyle is given Qu Rahn's green-bladed lightsaber, but, according to the canon LS ending, Boc destroys Rahn's lightsaber, so to combat Sariss, Kyle takes the yellor-bladed lightsaber of the fallen Dark Youth, Yun. After striking down Jerec with this lightsaber, he apparently seals away his lightsaber and tries to sever his connection to the Force. Once Desaan attacks and kidnaps Jan Ors, Kyle goes to Yavin IV to reclaim his lightsaber and re-learn the Force. The lightsaber he gets back has a blue blade.

Now, I haven't examined the hilts to verify whether or not it's even the same lightsaber, but I'd like to know why the saber changes color, aside from catering to the more casual SW fans who would be like "WTF? A yellow one? They only had red, green, and blue in the movies."

 

Yellow is.. supposed to be the colour of the lightsabers used by Jedi Sentinels I think... according to KOTOR I. Not particularly unusual. We also have Mace's purple blade.

Kyle may have made his own lightsaber since during his training under Luke, he will certainly be asked to make his own lightsaber.

 

He had an orange one in Mysteries of the Sith.

But.. it seems either he is frying his crystals often and has to replace them, because of lightsaber overuse (and someone said they last a lifetime, at last for the ancient jedi, lol). or someone has the hobby of stealing Kyles precious ls crystals. Luke? Mara? who knows! maybe he has a kaiburrcrystal splitter as ls crystal and that explains his greatness.

 

The Stuff from KOTOR doesn't factor into Kyle as he was created over ten years before that stuff was and lives in continuity 4000-5000 years later. Rahns was destroyed, he gave up Yuns, I haven't played Mysteries of the Sith so i can't help you there but sometime between Dark Forces II and Jedi Outcast Kyle had attend Lukes academy and left because he feared falling to the darkside again(he apparently fell in Mysteries of the sith). I guess he made a new lightsaber when attending and then left it there when he left.

From what i hear he something happens to Yun's saber and he builds the blue one from JO.

 

I've heard (but never got a source, I'm afraid) that the developer blokes for MotS originally wanted to give Kylie a yellow saber, but due to some palette problems or some such rubbish, they were forced to make Kylie's saber an orange one.

 

I would say he built a new one when he went to the Jedi Academy, since every one he had used since then hadn't been his.


It really bugged me in I, Jedi when Corran was saying that only he and Kam could train the others in combat and lightsaber drills. Kyle was better than Corran and close to Kam's level (maybe above, if you look at Kyle's accomplishments.)

 

The one in Jedi Outcast is completely different to the one in JK, and probably MOTS.

I think he built it, then decided he wasn't ready and left it at the Academy.

 

Out of Universe expanation: Stackpole probably didn't think Katarn was gonna be part of the original dozen.

In universe: I sense some of Kyle's sense of humor, letting the overblown ego of ol' Corsec think he was 'teh Sith' ad then giving him a proper whupping...which wouldn't be noted in the autobiographical work because Corran did want people to know he got beate like the proverbial red-headed stepchild.

 

Maybe Kyle just figured out the ancient Jedi "setsabercolor" trick.

 

You're talking blades . . . what about the hilt? Outcast's is golden. How does that compare to others?

 

The hilt in outcast isn't golden. It just has a golden glow around it as a gameplay mechanic to make it easier to find if drops somewhere.

 

I just dog whistle it back to hand.

 

The one in MOTS is the same one from JK, its supposed to be yellow not orange thats just a mistake by the game designers. Kyle then attends the academy builds his blue lightsaber and leaves after the whole "turns out our academy is in a big darkside temple thing" because for thoese of you know don't know, in MOTS Kyle goes to study an acient sith temple and is overwhelmed by the power in it, and Mara has to save him.

 

See, I knew it was a good idea to tell the artist and colorists for E&O what color to make that blasted saber. Blue . . . is good.

No, but seriously, Kyle's saber in MOTS should be the exact same color as it was in JK because we were using the exact same parameters as JK. It's not like we had to remake the blade or something. It's the same saber (Yun's... because we had to assume a light-side ending to make the MOTS story work.)

If it looks different, it may because of higher-rez screens or better color.

 

I'm not sure if anyone's answered this already, but the novella Dark Forces: Rebel Agent explains how Kyle ended up with Rahn's lightsaber, even though Rahn lost his. The explanation is that Rahn had two. The one he left for Kyle, the other had been a gift from Master Yoda and that was the one he lost just prior to his death. As for the Orange vs Yellow Saber, there is a background character in the comic book Jedi Academy: Leviathan, who looks an awful lot like Kyle weilding an yellow lightsaber. The did however use the dark Kyle Katarn model from the Multiplayer of JK for the MOTS so if may have simplly been an over site in that the coulor was supposed to be Yellow but it looks orange with the new got skin job.

But it is still Yuns saber thats what i was getting at.
