Comics Kylo Ren Returns in Marvel’s Star Wars: Legacy of Vader

Kylo Ren is ready to finish what his grandfather started. Soon, the Supreme Leader of the First Order will follow in the footsteps of Darth Vader with the new Marvel comic series Star Wars: Legacy of Vader.

Written by Charles Soule, who previously penned Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren and Star Wars: Darth Vader - Dark Lord of the Sith among others, the story begins with a journey to Mustafar, where Ren will descend into Vader’s castle. Later issues will take Kylo to the familiar sands of Tatooine as he tries to unlock the secrets of his family’s past.

Soule, who first teased the series at New York Comic-Con 2024, is excited to return to the Knight of Ren for a story that bookends his previous miniseries, which explored Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side. “When fans talk to me about my Star Wars work, two of my Marvel comic runs come up more than almost anything else: my 2017 run on Darth Vader with Giuseppe Camuncoli and my 2019 series The Rise of Kylo Ren with Will Sliney,” Soule tells StarWars.com. “I think both of those worked so well in part because they were set in parts of the Star Wars timeline full of unanswered questions about characters the audience really loves. This new series is not just a combination of those two books, but also a chance to explore an extremely rich section of the timeline that's almost entirely open: Kylo Ren's time as Supreme Leader of the First Order.” Set between the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Legacy of Vader revisits Kylo’s enduring connection to his maternal grandfather, the Empire’s enforcer Darth Vader, and further explores how the events of Vader’s past guide Kylo’s choices as he leads the First Order.

“Kylo is truly lost at this particular moment. In a very short span of time, he's faced two of his most significant mentors in combat (one of whom is his uncle), killed his own father, almost killed his mother, stolen control of a galaxy-level military that he has no idea how he'll use, and of course, found a deep connection with another Force-user named Rey,” Soule continues. “All of that is swirling around in his emotional matrix, making him deeply unstable, angry, frustrated... dangerous. He's looking for any form of guidance he can get — even if he won't admit it — and so he turns to just about the only thing he's got left, the legacy of his grandfather, the Sith Lord Darth Vader.”

We have a year between Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker to cover, which as we know gives us plenty of time for Kylo Ren to fight Cthulu, unleash a galaxy wide zombie apocalypse, build a robot copy of Darth Vader that goes rogue and creates a new faction called The Second Order that rides an army of genetically engineered elephants into battle, etc

It's been a while since we got an ongoing set during the ST. Even better, as it's centered on one of the main characters. Out of all the main characters, I'll say Kylo is the one who has the least amount of information in the movies themselves, mostly due to LFL's overreliance on secrecy. So, I believe that's a good thing. It's never too late to explore the era, even if the movies were controversial to some segments of the fandom. It would be cool if it had some connection to the Rey movie (probably not, though).

 

Cool. Finally some sequel era stuff. Unfortunately Rey will still probably be off limits due to her movie coming out (sometime(hopefully)).

 

Be interesting to see how long this lasts and how much they try to fit into the year

 

My very nerdy brain instantly went to potentially showing how Ren remakes his mask so that he can wear it during the Galaxys Edge and Rise of Resistance stuff, only to have it break again so it needs fixing in TRoS!

 

This was definitely one of the best moves they could have made right now. Looking forward to more Kylo.

Will be interesting to see how much Rey, Finn, and Poe end up being in this series.

 

With all the background they got from Qi'ra's trilogy, including starting to work for Palps at 3 ABY, looking forward to Knights appearing in this series.

 

There are already a bunch of Kylo stories in this timeframe, thanks to Galaxy's Edge and the old Star Wars Adventures comic series. It might make for some careful stepping continuity-wise, though of course Soule is more than up to that task.

Speaking of Galaxy's Edge, I suspect Rey actually will show up at some point - the Battle of Batuu (and surrounding stuff like the Halcyon story) happens during that year, which is important as it is (I think?) the only time we know Rey and Kylo encounter each other outside of the films. I don't think this series is going to ignore that.

We also know, from the Resistance series, that Kylo is using First Order Raiders to search for Sith relics during this time period. I'm guessing this series will add some additional shading to that subplot, which was somewhat underdeveloped in the animated series.

Good to see canon stepping back into the ST era! I'm looking forward to this one.
