Just got done reading Luceno's Labyrinth of Evil and I was totally blown away by his version of the events that occurred before ROTS. That battle with Mace and Grievious on top of the train would have been epic on film. This went completely against the continuity in the micro series which I quite enjoy but the book was way better. Also the hot pursuit of Sideous was suspenseful and gave a good reason for Grievious' invasion unlike the micro series. What do you guys prefer?

I don't care about continuity. I just like a good story.

I like the notion that both are true. And certainly EU novels written after them have used both. ROTS novel uses mostly Labyrinth of Evil - but The Rise & Fall of Darth Vader uses mostly microseries - saying that Anakin & Obi-Wan were at Nelvaan when they got the message. The tricky part is finding a place in Labyrinth of Evil to fit their Nelvaan mission into.

I like both but Labyrinth of Evil was better IMO. I was not a huge fan of the micro series until the last few episodes

I enjoy both, but like the idea the micro-series was propaganda videos, as you just can't mesh the two together.

You'll get stuff like: Well, if Mace Windu can Force-push away thousands of battle-droids in one hit, how can he possibly lose? Short of invoking Power of the Plot, there's no good answer.

It's at points like this there is no response save:

    **** continuity!

Labyrinth of Evil was easily (and remains) one of my favourite novels from the original Clone Wars run.

Like Iron_lord I've always just woven both together -- and back when I read them, wasn't really thinking about "continuity" much at the time, so was happy to accept any of the little things that didn't perfectly mesh.

Dantooine, having been a site of Jedi learning and wisdom for millennia, is by 22 BBY a light side nexus in perfect balance with the Force, allowing Jedi to accomplish feats otherwise impossible.

LoE is one of my favorite SW books period. I was really disappointed by S3 of the MS. Mace grabs wires from inside a Vulture Droid and flies it around Courscant, shooting at enemies?

Labyrinth of Evil is my favourite (and imho most readable) novel in the pre-ROTS run. Tartakovsky's Clone Wars were also really nicely done - sometimes over the top epic, but hey, it was supposed to be Samurai Jack in GFFA. Even though there are continuity clashes if you focus on both, I think both were introduced into subsequent works and interwoven nicely that it doesn't really matter. Like two versions of the same story basically. So I agree with Iron_lord both are the real deal in a way.

This thread should be locked as none of those things are now canon. They were done when GL had the license, now he sold that and Disney is the new owner and as such the old EU is Legends, no longer valid. TCW is the only thing that is valid from that time period, along with Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir. Until the story group says otherwise, the micro series, LOE, and all that pre-stuff is no longer canon. They can be mined and used to serve the new canon though, stripped to serve it newer incarnation. So its pointless to have this thread when none of it is legt anymore. I don't like anymore than some of you but that is what it is, so I wouldn't even bother to answer anymore which is better or worse, because they....no longer count...The story group has the final word, and those that say well, I can keep my canon....You do that, but wait till later stories come later on that start to swiss cheese your own canon.

Dude, I'm not saying you can't discuss EU in the literature thread, but this thread is ridiculous. In the last several years we've had a number of these micro vs LOE stuff, and I use to entertain them, but now whats the point. It don't count towards the new way of doing things. Its like me saying which is better TFU creating the Rebellion or some other source? You don't realize that all this is going to be retooled in a way. How many times haven't I read how some of you dislike Mace force pushing thousands of droids? Or how better the novel is? Or how GT got screwed with the allotted time, yet won awards for his shows, while TCW took foreever before it got something? Or how Mace pulled the cords and flew the vulture droid? Yet, failed to critizce the third Bane novel on how Bane was able to defect every rain drop with a lightsaber. Or Dork 81 and his force pushing 17 Imperial class star destroyers with the help of some 18 jedi to the other side of the galaxy? I'm just saying, leave this subject matter alone and move on. We keep going back to this every so often and for what? Story group brushed it aside.

For old time sake, if you want to know which is better the answer that I choose is none. LOE is the best tie in novel to a movie with the exception of Darth Pleguies which was fantastic. The micro series was awesome in its own right because Genndy was only given a morsel of time to do what he did, and you have to understand that star wars animation prior to that was very lackluster. Ewoks/Droids. and the little Holiday Speical Boba Fett short have not been given the proper recognition nor release that it deserves. Star Wars mainly stayed clear of animation until the micro series and what Genndy did was unforgetable, whether you agree with it or not. He not only boosted the cartoon network ratings at the time, but won three emmy's and an annie award for 25 chapters worth of limited animation. For just three seasons and a little over 2 hours worth of animation, they did what TCW couldn't do with a movie (4 Episodes) and 121 additional episodes. It wasn't until that show got cancelled that it started to get nominated and win emmy's Other than that it lost out on annie awards year after year. I also want to point out that the micro series at the time, many people thought that it was way better than the entire PM and AOTC movie put together. Some even credit the micro series for bolstering the viewership of ROTS, after the debacle of AOTC. Whether this is true or not is a matter of opinion I guess and my word against yours, but the only thing that was better than the micro series was the first KOTOR video game. That was it.

So while I chose none as being the best, it was because I hold both of them in great regards. LOE was down right the best tie-in novel I ever read (before Darth Pleguies) and damn right it should be included as canon, but to do so would mean that you would have to include other things that are in the novel that are not canon and from the looks of it , all that stuff will never be canon so they just eliminate the whole thing by not including any of it.
The micro series on the other hand, words can't describe the appreciation that I have for it. It made star wars into a brand for animation and spurred GL to create TCW that we just got and now we are into Rebels. Not to mention the Family Guy, Robot Chicken, and Phineas and Pherb spoofs. The micro series success was responsible for star wars to start working its way into animation despite much of the resistance from those of you that only wanted Dark Horse to be the lead story teller of EU content. Many of you only wanted the novels and comic books to be true the star wars storyteller and were taken aback at the mere thought of having star wars done in animation. Just like the micro series had its part, TCW was the begining of the end of for the EU. Why, look at the number of things that it changed, re-wrote and completely re-told and you'll have your answer.

    Dude. Chill.

Current writers appear to be treating as much of the pre-SG Prequel Era material as possible as having happened in general. Luceno's Tarkin makes references to many events in the CW Multimedia Project novels, as well as his own prequel-era novels.

It appears the idea is that what has been written is the 'default' as what happened, until something of necessity overwrites it. And in that case, only the material specifically overwritten is viewed as 'tossed aside'. While the works aren't strictly canonical, they serve as a decent 'historical' roadmap of sorts. The cool thing is, now we're not required to make sense of all the contradictions in the Legendsverse. We can enjoy them of their own merits, and acknowledge that it's not always going to be consistent.

I'm just now reading through the prequel-era EU books, and very much enjoying them, even though I'm well aware of their non-canonical status. I'm also a big fan and supporter of the Story Group Canon, and the new direction heading forward. It's not a mutually exclusive thing.

Until someone says otherwise, for example, I acknowledge events in the Republic comics as giving legitimate expression to the first encounters with Ventress, etc.

I haven't read LoE yet, but plan to very soon, and very much look forward to it. Also enjoy watching the Micro Series.

The official thread was locked before some users on this site were born, but I just realized LoE came out 10 years ago this week.

And thus commenced a decade of endless Coruscant Battle canon conflict and Grievous groupie fan art. Frankly we don't know which is more unsettling, but anyway THANKS LUCENO.

And for those of you who haven't read it (cough-@Taalcon -cough) YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED AND BE BANNED. Banned like a Neimoidian who lost his mechno-chair. That will always be the canon reason TCW ended.

Happy 10 year anniversary to LoE then[face_party]

As for which Battle of Coruscant version I prefer, I'll have to go with LoE. I like the micro series a lot, but obviously LoE portrays it more realistically and believably than the micro series and that's really the only reason why I choose LoE. One thing I find LoE lacking though is
not explaining how Grievous got his cough in ROTS, something that the micro series made pretty clear. Now it's been a while since I've read LoE, but I don't remember that being portrayed in the book. I hope my memory serves me well, otherwise please correct me

God I cannot stress how much I hate the term Dude. My name is not Bill nor is it Ted and I do not surf [face_plain]

Anyway back to the thread both are fantastic but I would argue that Labyrinth is the best of the 2 and really ties in well the most.

Labyrinth of Evil is great. But the Clone Wars micro-series was Gennady Tartakovsky doing Star Wars. So...

It seems to be layers. Microseries gives one approach. Republic + CW Novels give another approach, Republic Command and TCW give yet another.

Even though I've already seen all of TCW, I'm now doing a Clone Wars deep dive, wherein I re-watched the microseries, am now reading Republic and the CW Multimedia Project novels, and then plan to read Republic Commando, and re-watch TCW. It's really fine being down deep in the Clone Wars era. I think next to the TOTJ/Old Republic period, it's my present favorite Star Wars era.

I like to hope that if TCW had reached this point in the chronology, it would have tried to incorporate all the previous interpretations.
