I think the $64,000 question here is...

    Is it pronounced " LAGO"

    or

    "LEGGO"

the way it's written, it should be pronounced "LEEGO", but it's not...weird word "Lego"

it's like some people saying BOBA Fett, others say Bobba Fett....

so....how do you pronounce Lego ??

    :D

Quote from wikipedia about the phenomena of Shibboleth ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shibboleth )

In which case, it is our duty to pronounce it as Lago, even if we're wrong ;)

    Actually, I don't believe so ...

This from the LEGO builder's forum:

The name LEGO comes from the Danish words "Leg Godt", which means "Play well". In Latin it means "I put together".

In other words it is pronounced "LEG-GO" NOT "LAY-GO" .

LEGO is always shown in UPPERCASE. There is no such thing as LEGOs, it is always LEGO. Like sheep (singular) and sheep (multiple), not sheeps.

I think there's something in that for all of us! [face_tongue]

Yet a core group seem to refer to them as such...even in ads! I think it's a USA thing.

I cringe when I hear them referred to as Legos...gnnngngn.

I realise that this is one controversial subject in pronouncing this world wide known product.

Simple spelling alone looks like LEG-O or as Ze fwench would pronounce it le-go

I however (since DLA was a little takka) have pronounced it as LAY-GO

And that's the Bottom Line cause Alfy SAID SO !

    Leggo.

    But I say laygo...
We sound different to the rest of Australia because we weren't firstly settled by CONVICTS & therefore have CLASS. Perhaps to the point of speaking like we have plumbs in our mouths... If we are guilty of having a better class of citizen than the rest of Australia, then throw the book at us.....

Bah for the unwashed masses living outside of our borders...

It's Lego (Leg go) in every sense of the word.

There also right, anyone that was born in another state laughs in South Australia's direction because of that.

mind you we laugh at the word Fritz as well.

As an Italian I feel a need to comment. Leggo is an Italian invention, so like the sauce it's pronounced Leg-go, (loosely translated it means: I read. But it was a company name for kindergarten toys, not just the bricks.) But hey, it's all the same connector brick thingies.

side note...to those who voted "other" how do you pronounce it if you don't pronounce it leggo or laygo ?

Firstly, I voted 'other' to be cheeky. Secondly, the Poll asks if you say it LAGO or LEGGO. LAGO, to me, looks like 'lahgo' which is just a ridiculous way of saying it LOL

But yeah, I say LAYGO, just cos it sounds better, and everyone I know seems to understand it when said LAYGO. I remember once asking a friend if they liked Lego (I said it LEGGO) and he said 'nah, Dolmio is better'

    Nuff said :p

Well actually, "lego" can mean either bequeath or gather/choose, depending on what conjugation group you're looking at and the context :D

And that's what I get from doing Latin as a major :p
