I'm reading on these boards that Anakin ascends to the rank of Jedi master and is in no need of ObiWan as a trainer. How is this possible?

We hear it from Vader's mouth in ANH: he was still the learner the last time that we see them together in ROTS.

Am I off track here or what?

He's a Jedi Knight, but not a Jedi Master in Episode III--despite the fact that he thinks he deserves to be. As for being the learner, it does appear that Obi-Wan still acts as his friend and unofficial mentor in Episode III, and their relationshp carries on even after Anakin's promotion, so there's still a learning curve going on.

What really gets to me is when Gillard says that Anakin is a better fighter than Obi-Wan. The reasoning Lucas came up with for Vader being able to throw objects at Luke but not Obi-Wan was that Obi-Wan was more powerful than Vader. Vader was a four, Obi-Wan a six.

Well Obi-wan would be able to deal with flying objects a lot better. At that point Vader was also not trying to kill Luke, he wanted him beaten, battered, and broken. Luke was young and naive at that point, Obi-wan when they met in ANH is a very experience jedi master and warrior. He won't fall for the same stuff.

I also imagine that Vader feared Obi-Wan to some degree. Here is an old man who should be dead showing up on your master's new pet project for some strange reason. This man was also the one that almost killed you in the past, you only being saved by the suit you wear...

I wouldn't take that line literally... meaning Obi-Wan is still his Master. In way he is, because Obi-Wan is a Jedi Master by ROTS, Anakin only a Knight. They're probably even both on the Council, but Anakin will always be Obi-Wan's pupil, no matter how far he surpasses him in combat skills. Before Anakin became Vader, he spent the vast majority of his time with Obi-Wan and the Jedi as a Padawan, so this line makes total sense.

Well Obi-wan would be able to deal with flying objects a lot better.

That seems to fit quite well with Obi-Wan being a 6 to Vader's 4.

Just because Vader refers to Obi wan as "the master" in ANH doesn't mean he was technically still his master. Yoda calls Dooku "my old padawan" since he trained him in the past. Just shows the small amount of people that seem to have relevance to the GFFA....

    At least IMHO...

It's interesting with how it ties in with AOTC. He constantly saying "I'm ahead of him, I'm ahead of him", referring to OB1. It seems this line is like him saying, "I'm better than you and there's nothing you can do about it".

Anyway, I think Vader is just being symbolic, telling OB1 that he's in control now and not the other way around. I think he's trying to incite OB1, but of course OB1 would never fall for that type of suggestion now.

    "The circle is now complete."
"You should not have come back."
"Your powers are weak, old man."

Was Vader in the armor BEFORE The Duel with Obi-Wan?

    No.

Obi-Wan was still the Master of the Force at that time.

Now Vader thinks he's mastered the Force because he is a Sith and Obi-Wan doesn't understand "the power of the Dark Side."

Sith seem to spend much of their time congratulating each other and taunting the Jedi about how much more powerful they are now, like they're trying to convince themselves. :)

Like any good bad guy! "Activate the unnecessarily slow-moving dipping mechanism!" ;)

Besides, Obi-Wan will always be Anakin's Master. There's no changing that, and most Jedi wouldn't want to, whatever level they reach. Had Qui-Gon lived, I think Obi-Wan would ever had refered to him as Master. Now, Anakin on the other hand (congratulated ever on by Palpatine) is fatally focused on getting ahead of all his peers and superiors. It doesn't mean more than that. Plus, I guess Vader is genuinly pleased to sense how much weaker Kenobi is than the last time they met. After all, the last time Kenobi beat him...
