I recently read that the Leatherback Sea Turtle may go extinct in the Pacific within 10 years.

Now I'm not really an environment nut, but I believe strongly in conservation of Earth's animal and plant life.

I'm doing everything I can to contribute to the effort to save the Leatherback. Specifically, I'm avoiding Shrimp and Tuna, as the way those animals are caught can result in the destruction of many other animals, including the Leatherback. In fact, for every pound of shrimp caught, there are 9 pounds of other animals that are caught and thrown away. Also, I'm making it a point to dispose of my plastic bags properly, preferably by burning them, especially since I'm close to the coast. Plastic bags blow into the sea, where they are mistaken for jellyfish by Leatherback turtles, and result in the animal suffocating.

If you care about the Leatherback, and have a Myspace account, please visit http://www.myspace.com/mrleatherback, become his friend, and learn other ways you can help.

    I second that.

Here's a question... isn't burning your garbage harmful to the environment also? Something about polluting the air?

Probably, but not as much :p

I just hate to see Earth's animal life going extinct. In 100 years or so, there may be ways to purify our air, but if we lose the leatherback, we can't get him back.

The only shrimp I advocate eating are the ones raised in the shrimp farms of the deserts of West Texas, artificially dug, and not affecting the coast.

That's great news, TBF. With enough awareness, the Leatherback could make it.

There is serious talk of cloning, actually. We used to discuss this at this other board of mine that I haven't been to in a long time.

But what I remember from our discussion was, some scientists are trying to clone the Sand tiger shark to bolster natural populations, and depending on how successful this may be with them, it could be used on other wild life such as the leather back.

The solution is to find a deadly substance that looks look a hamburger and feed it to unsuspecting humans, just to make things even.

Oh wait, we have that already. It's called McDonald's.

I'd tell Wanderguard that his taste buds wouldn't tell us what turtles thought of the taste, though.

However, since you're evolutionarily closer to turtles, why don't you tell us TBF?

Maybe its just their time to die off? Did anyone think of that? Nooooo...they just immediately see how humans are bringing harm to the species and place all the blame on us! This is an outrage! I'm writing my congressman!

If you want to save the turtles then eliminating shrimp from your diet will have no direct effect. Whatever shrimp you don't eat, someone else will eat it. Why don't you go down and help clean up the beaches? At least you will actually be doing something to help the cause.

Not if it was caused by global warming. [face_whistling]

Anyway, thanks for making a thread about this, Wandergaurd. I added Mr. Leatherback as a friend on my MySpace. :)
