Can anyone give me a chronology of the lightsaber(s) Leia uses? She seems to jump around from red to blue to red randomly and I can never remember what color lightsaber she's using in which story and how she got it. Thanks!
I believe she's had about 4 or 5. Luke made her a green one (Thrawn Trilogy), she then had a blue one for some time after that (She may have just changed the crystal herself with this one, but I remember a few novels after the Thrawn Trilogy mentioning her blade as being blue). During the Corellian Trilogy I believe Luke made her another one which was red, and from her till the Vong War I believe she was always mentioned as having a red blade, so that was probably the same one. Then during the Dark Nest Trilogy she began training with Saba, and during that time she built a new blue lightsaber and has been mentioned as having a blue blade since then. And I haven't read it in a while, but i'm pretty sure Vima-Da-Boda gave her a lightsaber during the Dark Empire Trilogy, which takes place after the Thrawn Trilogy so that'd be another blade as well.
The lightsaber she received from Vima was destroyed by Palpatine. I think the red bladed one was destroyed in Balance Point, but I could be wrong about that.
I think you're right about the red bladed one being destroyed in Balance Point, it was Tsavong Lah who did it during their duel I believe. If so, that'd be another blade she has, as i'm certain that she's mentioned as wielding a red bladed lightsaber after Balance Point.
I believe that Tsavong captured the lightsaber along with Leia and then destroyed it at the end of his Holonet broadcast at the end of Balance Point, actually.
Eh, same ending with Leia creating a new lightsaber. So that'd be 2 red bladed ones during the Vong War. 1 green bladed one during the Thrawn Trilogy. A blue bladed one after that up until the Corellian Trilogy (Though she again could've just changed the crystal from the green one Luke gave her) She made another blue bladed one during the Dark Nest Trilogy, and finally Vima-Da-Boda had given her one years earlier which was destroyed. That's at least 5-6 lightsabers over her career. Not bad. Gamiel Her her brother's no slouch in the lightsaber department either! He's had quite a few in his day.
I know for a fact she uses one during the Force Heretic Trilogy. During the second book, Refugee, when dealing with some Ssi-Ruuk.
I can't point to the source... I know it's one of the WEG sourcebooks, but that has a short passage in-universe of Leia constructing a lightsaber. God damn my memory
Because that sort of thing was oddly un-stigmatized before the prequels. Luke uses a Red Shoto against Lumiya in the Marvel comics, as well. On the flip side of this, Jerec's merry band of Dark Jedi don't use red sabers either, Jerec himself notwithstanding. Lightsabers being Color-Coded for Your Convenience didn't happen until TPM.
Didn't know that. You know, the more I think about it, it really wasn't until AOTC that a "Prequel Aesthetic" emerged in earnest. All of the things we complain about with regards to contemporary EU ripping off the Prequels, we're really only talking about Episodes II and III. Phantom Menace was a remarkably different beast in many respects.
Luke built her first red one for her, and this was some time after he himself had used a red shoto. As the others pointed out, before the Prequels you had Jedi using blades of numerous different colors, Sith and Dark Jedi too. In fact, I believe the first image we saw for Darth Bane had him with either a blue or a purple blade.
Episode I was shot on 35mm film and used physical sets and practical effects with CG. Episode II was when he started shooting digital and became more geared toward CG with most locations, e.g. Kamino, Geonosis. Episode II is when we saw an army of Jedi limited to blue and green and Lucas told Samuel L. Jackson that good guys use blue and green and bad guys use red. Before that, Ki-Adi-Mundi had purple, Mace had blue, Plo Koon had yellow, and Adi Gallia had red. Jedi Starfighter made the switch to blue for her.
You are evil. Therefore you must use a red crystal and/or red focusing lens in your lightsaber. No exceptions. You are good. Therefore you must use either a blue or a green crystal and/or lens in your lightsaber. Unless your name is Mace Windu. Then you can use whatever color you'd like, because in real life you are Samuel L. Jackson and that level of celebrity comes with privileges. Are you using a red lightsaber? Then you must be evil, because only evil people use red lightsabers! Are you using a blue or green lightsaber? Then you must be good, because only good people use blue or green lightsabers! Are you using both a red and a blue or green lightsaber? Then you must be Anakin Skywalker. It's all in the Handbook for Dumbing Down Visual Media for the Masses.
I'm not necessarily troubled that Lucas took that route because whatever, but I really don't understand why the Expanded Universe required compliance with it. I can understand why they took the G-canon characters and altered their lightsabers to match the films, such as the aforementioned Ki-Adi-Mundi and Plo Koon, but I don't understand why non-film characters that will never appear in the films need to have either a blue or green lightsaber, or even why a character like Adi Gallia would need a blue lightsaber considering that she doesn't appear in the films apart from Episode I. It seems like continuity is handled unintuitively or even obtusely on occasion. If Lucas says something on camera as some sort of universal truth for his movie, then that must be true in the Expanded Universe because it's caught on film and the EU would be making Lucas a liar if it didn't follow it! It is just a strange set of priorities and it cuts both ways, though the EU is more often limited to violating Lucas in spirit but not in law, so to speak, while the EU is forced to adhere to unnecessary restrictions that are peculiar in their insignificance. Lucas says the Emperor doesn't come back as well and the EU doesn't go out of its way to correct this, but if he says the Jedi only use blue and green then that needs to be fixed immediately.
Well, all lightsabers were red, blue or green, even in the EU until....Callista? who had a yellow one. I remember being very surprised that other colors were even possible when I read whatever book that was in, during the mid-1990s. And technically, going by movies and the Clone Wars, the only canon colors are light blue, red, green, blue, purple, lime green, yellow, and silver. Oh, and the Mandalorian darksabers. ORANGE SABERS FOR EPISODE IV!

So, yeah. Thrawn trilogy green, apparently disappeared -> Vima-Da-Boda saber, unknown color due to the nature of the DE comics, destroyed by Palpatine -> some blue lightsaber, just randomly appears and disappears -> Corellian trilogy ruby lightsaber, destroyed by Tsavong Lah -> NJO ruby lightsaber, taken from Leia by Saba in DNT -> post-DNT blue lightsaber, created by Leia.
