Forget about LOTR, harry potter or spiderman!
AOTC is s science fiction movie so it is time to see how well it does compared with movies from the same genre:
    (note: these are some examples)

    TITAN A.E:

one of the best movies of 2000 and beside AOTC the best sci-fi movie of the last 3 years. with a superb space chase through crystal asteroids. ( too bad GL did not use this for Jango-obi wan chase. remember disney`s star tours?)

good but not in the same league.

    Wing commander:

Awful. I know they had only 30 million dollars. and some ideas and special effects are good but simply awful. freddy prince jr. ?!?!?!
there is one scene when the female wing commander is chasing a rocket in an asteroid field. compare THIS with AOTC. And then tell me AOTC is awful! Ha !

    the winner is AOTC.

    STAR TREK NEMESIS:

Did not see it, so I will not judge about the movie. It looks promising but I will not watch it. My first impression: it is .... Star Trek.

    ---------------

    Forbidden Planet:

    classic!
A lot of dialogue and acting reminds me of AOTC. Special effects are old but charming.

    -----------------

Many, many other movies out their ( lost in space, event horizon, galaxy quest, satrgate...) but I am surprised: VERY few competition for a Star WARS movi. Hollywood seems to dislike or ignore science fiction.

It's almost a law of physics that 9 out of 10 sci-fi/fantasy movies stink.

Here's my list of some of the sci fi movies that are better than AOTC:

    2001
    Alien
    Aliens
    Terminator
    Terminator2
    Star Wars, ANH
    ESB
    ROTJ
    Jurassic Park
    Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still
    The Thing (John Carpenter)
    Metropolis
Logan's Run (yes, I am serious)
    Star Trek 2
    MIB

I think, in general, what Star Wars movies have that other science fiction movies DON'T have is a sense of joy and optimism.

Anyone that lists MIB as being a better film than AOTC loses every shred of credibility. He's even serious, which makes it all the more scarier.

Forget listing MIB...LOGAN'S RUN is the credibility killer.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this thread won't live to see 100 replies.

Call me crazy, but I think AOTC is my favorite movie of all time. I know, I know, it's incredible that someone could actually have that opinion, given this is an AOTC forum on a Star Wars messageboard. It seems like the more proper thing to gush over stuff like Spiderman, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and the like. But like I said, I dare to be different....

You're not alone here, RoyalGuard. AOTC is my favorite movie of all time too. It's amazing isn't it? There are people who post on a SW website who actually like SW.

I was thinking this was a comparison of the qualities of science fiction movies as they applied to AOTC, not a "Versus" thread.

    Oh well.

    Alien
    Aliens
    Terminator
    Terminator2
    Star Wars, ANH
    ESB
    ROTJ
    Jurassic Park
    Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still
    The Thing (John Carpenter)
    Metropolis
Logan's Run (yes, I am serious)
    Star Trek 2
    MIB

Jabbadabbadoo: interesting list, and I whole heartedly agree, with the exception of MIB! ;)

To that list I would add:

    E.T.
    Close Encounters
    Ghostbusters
    Blade Runner
    Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
    Invaders From Mars
    Flash Gordon

All those films I had more fun watching and would choose over Attack Of the Cartoon Clones!

    Ok, I'm making a go. :p

    2001
Didn't get it. Someone explain it to me. Ok, it's a movie about the evolution of mankind. Great. That doesn't mean they have to spend 20 minutes showing two space ships dock set to classical music.

    Alien
Very good movie. When everyone was rushing to make their Star Wars (ANH) rip off, this one went horror. Brillant creature design by HR Giger. Still, basically a haunted house movie in space.

    Aliens
Ok, I liked it, but what more was it really than a bunch of space marines shooting at aliens? A very well done and visually stunning movie about space marines shooting at aliens but none the less, a movie about space marines shooting at aliens.

    Terminator
Awesome movie. Like Alien, a dark and violent response to SW's happy space world.

    Terminator2
Superior to the original, added to the story in a logical way.

    Star Wars, ANH
I haven't really ranked the SW films in my mind but as far as influence and changing the industry, ANH will probably never be topped.

    ESB
Agreed. I haven't ranked the other films, except this one.

    ROTJ
The Luke/Vader/Palpatine were some of the most dramatic and emotionally charged scenes in the genre. But the ewoks and repeat of the ANH battle take points away.

    Jurassic Park
A benchmark in visual FX. That's about it.

    Forbidden Planet
Don't remember enough about it, I'm ashamed to say. I do know it paved the way for shows like Star Trek.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
That movie just ended too abruptly. They're not going to let us fight. Ok. Good.

    The Thing (John Carpenter)
Meh, overrated. The FX were poor even for 1982 and it was basically a remake of In vaders of the Body Snatchers and every other Cold War era people being possessed movie.

    Metropolis
Probably one of the most revolutionary films of the century. It had an android in it, before the computer was invented. Showed a city planet with flying cars (well, planes) 60 years before Blade Runner and had a large impact on German expressionist-influenced directors like Tim Burton and Ridley Scott.

Logan's Run (yes, I am serious)
Get out of here. Slighty clever concept but essentially a long chase scene. Sounds like another movie about a piece of jewlry....

    Star Trek 2
Well, I do agree that this movie is a classic. Revenge, Love, Loss...and one of the most quotable films of the 80's. And of course, the immortal line. "KHAAAAAAN!". Hell yeah.

    MIB
    Linda Florentino is hot. [face_plain]

Let's watch as folks list films they think are better than AOTC (Terminator 3, both Matrix sequels) that haven't even been released yet. Can you be any more hard-headed and plain biased than that?

Oh yeah, Matrix II will be good!

I would put David Lynch's Dune and AOTC on the same level, as they both have excessive special Effects and a poor script.

    "Alien(all of them)"

, Do you really mean all of them, smauldookie?

3 and Resurrection sucked, IMO, and they don't hold a candle to AOTC.

I actually like Total Recall better. Starship Troopers wasnt bad either. In fact the second part of AOTC reminded me alot of ST.

Of course, you forget - ROBOCOP!

Actually, for nostalgias sake, I have more affection for these films:

    The Dark Crystal
    Labrynth
    Krull

    2001 just freaks me out.
event horizon is one of my favs.
alien 2 aliens is the best of the series in my opinion.
    same goes for T2
anyone ever see femalien? hahahaha its porn by the way.

    Pitch Black
    Inner Space with dennis Quaid.
    Tron

Then Of course, anything with Ray Harryhausen effects like:

    Jason & The Argonaughts
    Clash Of The Titans
Sinbad & The Eye Of The Tiger
    7th Voyage Of Sinbad
    and his dinosaur films

Don't the Superman films count as Sci-Fi? If they do, then the Batman movies do too, and Spiderman.

You guys have to be kidding me? MIB? Logan's Run? Those were awful movies. So far no one has listed a movie that comes close to the level of AOTC, with the exception of the other Star Wars movies, E.T. and Close Encounters. The rest of those films, like most SCI-FI are medioacre to just plain bad.

2001 and Blade Runner are extremly over-rated.

Terminator 2 is a great film but if fits in more with the action genre than it does SCI-FI.

Star Trek 2 is the best Star Trek film but not in league with the greatest SCI-FI films of all time. It's only memorable to Star Trek fans and not your average movie-goer.

Alien 3 and 4 continue the trend of bad sequels to imaginative originals.

Jurrassic Park will always be a favorite of mine but just like the Alien series, it suffers from bad sequels with extremly lame plots involving characters that are forced back into a bad situacion through some unbelivable measures.
