I heard no one could get through to him and I've seen a couple of pictures of him in his home at England, bald, fat and everything! And if I am not mistaken, the last report of him ever showing up anywhere was in the studio during Wish You Were Here when he was jumping up and down brushing his teeth! Him and his damn walls! Let's try to contact him! Who's with me?

He's practicing detachment. I bet you could stick two firecrackers up his nose and he wouldn't even know it.

Okay, let's all form a circle, light candles, join hands, and drop a hell of a lot of acid, and maybe, just maybe, we can get through to him.

Then we can tell him how great David Gilmour is!

Syd's doing ok, provided no one brings up the Floyd, which actually triggers weeks-long bouts of depression. He's focused on his painting, though he's said to be suffering of diabetes-related vision problems.

Funny you should mention Syd Barrett; I recieved the Shine On box-set in the post just yesterday.

I don't see what the point would be in trying to contact him, though; not to mention that he's probably on another planet, mentally, after thirty years he'd be such a different person that there'd be no point anyway. Personally I'd be more interested in contacting Lee Mavers (of the La's) instead, as there is at least a chance of him releasing some new material, while there's no chance of that happening with Syd.

Oh yeah, I just have to say that Dave Gilmour is directly responsable for nearly everything I don't like about Pink Floyd. Those godawful wankey solos just do my head in at the best of times, and that last couple of Floyd albums were possibly the finest examples of urinating on a great musical legacy i've ever seen.

For our uncultured members at the JC, Syd Barrett is the "Crazy Diamond", the one who Pink Floyd "Wishes were here".

I don't think he'd really respond to much of anything you did to him. He hasn't really "been there" for many years now. This guy is should be the poster child of the anti-drug campaign. I mean really, do you want your mind to turn out like his?

He's brain is probably callouse and stuff!

And about David Gilmour, I'm pissed at him just as I am pissed with Axl Rose even though Axl is worse. He just puts down Pink Floyd with no reason and gives this "I'm 55 years old!" crap and then does a solo project. So basically if he does a solo project then the 55 year old man won't be touring and doing any more than he would be if he put Pink Floyd on it? Ha! Let's see what "Old Men" like Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and B.B. King have to say about that! They're actually busy doing something! Stupid Gilmour!

These "Old Men" of Pink Floyd are strange, yes. One guy with a callouse brain, one guy making excuses, two guys on the side waiting for the planets to align(Mason and Wright) and Roger Waters actually doing things! YAY! From interviews I've seen on VH1, Roger Waters seems like a new person! YAY! Let's contact him too and eat dinner at his house! In fact, let's have our little tour and eat dinner at the homes of these guys! Then maybe we can have dinner with Guns N Roses too! And maybe even Led Zeppelin! YAY!

    Poor Syd :(

That kind of reminds me of my socialness

And I also once heard that Syd was asked back into the band during Wish You Were Here and he said no, yet I also heard that he once asked "So, when are we going to add the guitars?" and they replied "They're already there, Syd." or something like that. Hmmm, what happen? ?[face_plain]

    Please. Syd as brilliant.

But Gilmore is responsible for what made Pink Floyd great. His music was great.

Pink Floyd after Barret left would not have been great without David. And it would not have been great without Roger.

    Those two are Pink Floyd.

I love Roger solo and I am glad he went solo, because I am sorry, as great as Animals, The Wall and Final Cut were, it was not Pink Floyd. It was Roger Waters going ego-maniacal and basically going solo but keeping David around for his guitar playing and musical ability. The 4 songs that became hits on The Wall were written by Roger and composed by David:

    Young Lust
    Comfortably Numb
    Run Like Hell
    Another Brick part 2

There last album as Pink Floyd was Wish You Were Here. The last time all 4 of them collaboratd and before Roger went mad with his ego.

I mean, David's music on Wish You Were Here and Dark Side Of The Moon was hypnotic.

And David had the vocals better than Roger. I mean, cannot imagine anyone else singing Money, Time, Wish You Were Here, Young Lust, Welcome To The Machine, Every Color You Like, Comfortably Numb, etc, etc.

And Roger has a good voice too and I can't imagine anyone else singing the songs he did vocals on.

They both worked of each other and when they both sang during a song it was awsome.

Don't knock Gilmore. You can't have Pink Floyd without him.

    And same with Roger.

BUT... Division Bell was closer to the original sound of Pink Floyd than it was during the last 3 albums with Roger involved. I mean, PULSE was a hell of a live album much closer to Pink Floyd.

I love The Wall. I love Animals. I love Final Cut. But I loved them as stand alone works. They were so far away from what Pink Floyd was and David and Rick and Nick hated that and also the fact that it was Roger's excuse to do solo work but keep David and the name around.

    They both have their merits.

David and Roger were responsible for making Pink Floyd what it was.

The Syd Barret period was a brilliant period, but it was psycadelic pop tunes and Roger had little involvement in that.

Syd left and the band was reborn to what it is until Animals came.

    Don't knock david!

    Hey, watch your mouth >

I'm not saying David sucks, I'm saying he's gotten grumpy and obnoxious recently! He's one of my favorite guitarists, but his personality NOWADAYS are ridiculous >

And the greatest song on The Wall is actually Mother. It seems like there's a little bit of both Gilmour and Waters in that one, but I like it because it's...

    And because the lyrics are

Yeah, Mother is great because David and Roger play off each other.

Hey, I did not use foul language at all. I watched my mouth. I just vented my rant.

But come on, how about Roger? He is know not only to be the bleakest guy in rock, but is also one of the grumpiest guys in the world. He blames everything on Pink Floyd and puts David down all the time. Why do you think David got grumpy all of a sudden? And Roger has been mocking him since he left the band. And even sued him for keeping Pink Floyd alive making claims that Pink Floyd was his band and his only. Man, Rick and Nick were in the band longer than Roger.

Take Waters out of post-Syd Floyd and you lose the band's atmosphere, ambition and intelligence. Take Gilmour out of post-Syd Floyd and you lose a hundred identikit solos, some good arrangements and a couple of decent pop songs. Gilmour has his talents, certainly, but they're far better suited to improving the works of others then creating something new in it's own right. Barrett and Waters were both unique talents, both musically and lyrically, while Gilmour is just your average guitarist and songwriter. He just can't be placed on the same level as those two.

All Momentary Lapse and The Division Bell showed me was how little imagination Gilmour has. The Division Bell sounded like old Floyd, sure, and that's the whole point; rather then trying to create something new, they were conciously trying to make a record with the classic Pink Floyd sound, re-using all the old gimmicks (sound effects etc) just for the sake of it. The band may have moved on from their 'classic' early 70's sound from Animals onward, but all that tells me is that back then Pink Floyd was still a genuine creative force, while in their 90's incarnation they were just dinosaurs cashing in on past successes.

Like Short Round pointed out, Gilmour clearly doesn't give a crap about the band anymore. If they ever do reform, it'll be for the money alone, just like last time.
