I want to discuss a topic that I have long wondered about in the Star Wars movies.
As we have seen in the EU, both Jedi before and after the Empire have lightsaber colors other than green and blue, namely yellow, orange, crimson, magenta(Yes I think it's stupid to have lightsabers of the same color that are just different shades) but there are other colors. Although I understand that Lucas wanted to prevent a rainbow of lightsabers, I really loved the other colors. I also think it was incredibly stupid of Lucas to give ONE jedi a purple saber. So what do you guys think? Do you prefer just blue and green, or would you have liked a broader range of colors?

I think both are good as long as Sith are the only ones with red sabers(though I know the EU has had red saber wielding Jedi.)

Yea but technically the Jedi arent wielding "red" sabers, they are crimson(Adi Gallia) or Magenta(Leia Organa Solo)

There's always going to be that part of me that would've liked to see an orange or yellow saber in the films, because I like those colors over blue and green. But at the same time, I am glad that they went with blue and green vs. red. It makes more sense symbolically, and it just keep things more simple. The screen would just look way too busy if they used a great variety of colors for a scene like the arena battle.

I hadn't thought of how busy it would look on-screen, and blue and green being the only colors may have looked a lot better than the EU colors.

The only reason that Mace Windu wields a purple lightsaber is because he specifically asked George Lucas for one and Lucas agreed.

Well i guess it would look busy onscreen, but i think sometimes Lucas can be ridiculous. He gave Sam Jackson a purple saber, but couldn't give Nick Gillard a yellow lightsaber? Theres a story behind how Mace got his purple crystal, why not another elaborate story for Cin Drallig?

Yeah, just pour out a box of Mike and Ike candy if you want to see what it would look like. :p

Back when Episode I came out, the official Ki-Adi action figures came with yellow sabers. I always thought that color fit him perfectly. Wish he had a yellow in the films.

Plo had a yellow or orange saber too. Ki-Adi also had a purple saber in the comics.

I prefer the rainbow of colours as someone put it, Lucas (pretty much) stuck to blue/green/red which makes sense for the films as it is symbolic of the Jedi/Sit, but over the whole EU I'm glad there is much more variety.

I love silver lightsabers ... or silverish-green ones. Yup, rainbow would be much nicer, but keep red for the Sith (make it tradition or whatever). But probably for on-screen ... just two with an occasional different one is easier.

I like the EU sabers, but I have no problem with how the lightsabers are depicted in the films. The green, blue and red can seem a bit boring at times, but you never have to wonder if someone's a good guy or a bad guy. Red lightsaber = Uh oh. :p

It also makes sense that in the films you see a lot of the same colors, blue/green/red. Those are much more common crystals then the purple/yellow/and silver ones. Padawans much go on an adventure by themselves to prove himself, in the process obtaining a crystal. Some, like Mace, were lucky and got a rare crystal. I think the reason the sith used red cytals is because they have dark properties and can only find them oh a sith planet, which Jedi do not go on. This is all EU so....

    EDIT:

Sith crystals are not natural, they are synthetically created, IIRC we see Maul creating a crystal in this fashion during the TPM novel.

Really? I always thought they were formed near volcanos on the sith planet. My bad.

I can't remember the exact details, but it has to do with creating the crystal in an oven in conjunction with meditation, IIRC the process can last a few days. Though I assume this doesn't bind the crystal to the creator as Palpatine was said to have made powerful crystals for his apprentices, other than Maul who does his own.

We see Maul doing this in TPM novel, but we also see Luke doing the same thing in SotE to create the green crystal for his RotJ saber, and really stretching my memory I think Jaina Solo creates her crystal this way as well.

They can do silver, but black doesn't work because there's no true black light.

Corran's is a bit special, being dual phase, silver in one phase and purple in the other, guess he was inspired by Gantoris (well Exar Kun). Though I assume he mainly keeps it in the standard silver phase as the YV called him Silverblade.

The EU after episode six really messed up everything, and now it is at odds with the Prequels. Lowbacca had a bronze saber. BRONZE.
Y can't they keep it pure

The EU had established the multitude of lightsaber colors before the prequels. And even after TPM the EU was still putting a variety of lightsaber colors in the hands of Jedi council members, e.g. yellow for Plo Koon, purple for Ki-Adi-Mundi, orange for Yaddle, crimson for Adi Gallia, etc. It wasn't until AOTC that it became clear that blue and green (aside from Mace's purple) were the only colors there were for the Jedi, and red the only color for the Sith.

I think the EU tries to reconcile the change by saying (I might be a little off on the details) that Jedi prior to 1,000 BBY used a variety of colors, but during the war with the Sith many of the crystal caves were destroyed save for those on Ilum which only possessed green and blue crystals. Then after Luke rebuilt the order, new caves were found and synthetic crystals were also used, allowing for almost an endless variety of colors. However, this doesn't address the fact that Plo Koon had a yellow saber during the time of TPM, etc. I suppose there is no reconciling that fact (unless it has been and I'm just not aware) and maybe the variety of colors at the time of TPM just has to be ignored.
