Just curious.. I believe standard length is 10 inches for the hilt? What does everyone suggest? I used to buy a straught 12 inch pipe, but then I realized it is just way too unnecessary. 10 inches is a good length, but I guess it is mostly based upon one's preference.

10-12 inches is the standard. You can go shorter, or you could even go longer.. it's just a matter of preference.

My lightsabers are made of the 12" pipe.. we didn't even need to trim them down, the work just fine.

I prefer 12 in. for singles, and as of right now, I use 24 in. for double, but I'm thinking of going shorter.

    ::puts 2 hilts together::

Yeah.. 24 inch seems a bit much. Maybe 20 would be better?

I dunno, I have no intention of making a double-saber. I just don't need one.

*Shrug* Depends on the type of fighting that you're going to be doing with them, too, and the size of the person that's using 'em. Ever saber's unique. For example:

If you are Vaportrail, you enjoy using sabers the size of Nebraska.

Exactly so. I was just introduced to a 10 inch saber, and it just seems more confortable. But of course, that would be my preference. Just 12 inches seems like a lot of room. So I'm still experimenting with it all.

I prefer to use the shorter lengths to match the ones in the movies. 9-10" is my goal (hehe), but for the props that hang off of belts, I use ~12" hilts, and for handles to fighting props I use more sturdy larger hilts ~13"

I like an 11 or 12 in hilt for single bladed, and 20-22 inch for a double bladed. length of blades on double bladed I like it 2.5 ft long.

Depends on your fighting style I suppose. If you're doing long, sweeping power slashes, the longer is better. If you're more into the "Perry, perry, thrust, thrust- Good!" school of thought, shorter works. I'd make stunt sabers pracitcal and beauty shot sabers pretty.

    "Perry, perry, thrust, thrust- Good!"

The misspelling makes this SO funny.

Standard sizes set aside, I prefer a hilt that is somewhat proportional to the wielder. To me, it looks better on film.

can you pick it up? can you swing it? ok, good :)

It's really not that complicated. but if you want a technical lenght, its somewhere around 10-12 inches for a normal blade and 22-30 (i think) for a double bladed saber.

I guess 10-12" for a single-blade saber is the going standard, with 18-22" an acceptable size for a dual-bladed saber.

Like I said before, I think the hilt should be sized more with the size of the wielder in mind. Even though the saber toys you can buy are all about the same size regardless of wielder, if you take proportions and wielder into consideration, you'll see that Yoda's saber in AOTC was a bit smaller than the average saber.

Also, take into consideration the fighting style of the wielder. The one problem I still see in many of the films I've watched is that all the sabers are the same general size. According to the history of the saber, there have been numerous sizes to encompass saber purposes that follow what short swords, long swords, bastard/hand and a half swords, etc.

I would personally suggest using a hilt size which compliments the wielders height and fighting style. It will look more realistic on film. I really think people should break away with just using the standard single-bladed saber size idealogy. The more films I watch that use the exact same sized sabers despite the wielders size, the more I look for a sticker on the saber hilt with an "OEM" brand name on it. If you take a look at some of the footage shot behind the scenes of Episodes I-III, you'll notice that there is a small difference in size between the "mounted on a belt" prop saber and prop saber used in the fighting sequences.

In the end, it's how it looks on film that matters.

All that decides hilt length should be the preference of the user. If you want your "style" to be "I'm swing a baseball bat" then by all means - make a short hilt with no grip.

For reference, the hilt length of my iaito (dull katana) is 11" from the tsuba to the end. I find sabers that are significantly shorter than this are lousy for a Japanese style.

Yeah, like Hasbro sabers are to Clay Kronke, and VaporTrail's sabers are to André the Giant. :D

Well, the original sabers were 3-cell flashgun tubes.

Now, I got a lot of 17 flashguns on eBay(mostly Heilands) that were pretty dang cool. 6 3-cells, a couple 2-cells, some odd smaller stuff, and a Heiland 5-cell--my Wookie Saber! Figure what a 3-cell maglight length is, than add 2/3 onto it.

What I can't figure is why a flashgun would need that much power. Oh well.

When Ghosts of the Republic hits the net, you'll be able to see it in the trailer & some of the commedic snippets.
