If you've ever played Jedi Outcast you know that you can toss your lightsaber at a whim and then catch it after slicing some dude in half.

How come the only time we see a Jedi throwing his saber is Yoda (and it is a cool scene) but we never see anyone toss one like in the game Jedi Outcast.

We see Vader toss his in ROTJ but again we don't see it come back.

Are Jedi incapable of this? (do to limitations on the ethical use of the force or combat situations) Or do we merely not see it in the films?

Yes, the Jedi can move things with their mind, read others thoughts, and deflect laser bolts at lightning speed, but they cannot throw a lightsaber.

    [face_plain] to you, good sir.

    Little harsh, no?

Well we did see Vader throw his lightsaber in RotJ ... and I think in ESB, right? Either way, all indications seem to say that Jedi can throw a lightsaber, they just choose not to in the films. They use the Force as their ally, for defense ... never for attack. Throwing a lightsaber at someone might be considered to be a little too proactive for a Jedi.

Welcome to the forums Tommy, thanks for taking my post completely out of context.

If you have something meaningful to add, please do.

How am I taking it out of context?

You're asking why Jedi in the movies don't throw lightsabers like in the video games. The obvious answer of "Because George Lucas didn't write a scene like that" evades you, so I'm helping you out.

I dont see why that cant. Other then the fact that its against the Jedi ethics. They use the Force for defense not offense. The reason you can use it in the games is because it looks cool! And Yoda is allowed because he is that damn cool!

Gee thanks for the help, you were so polite. I don't think we'll be needing your assistance any longer, other people have had far more interesting things to say.

Don't take any offense, thats the truth. I'm just trying to help you out, I know your new and still getting used to the forums and all....

When does he throw his lightsaber in ESB?

ZI think he meant ROTJ. When Luke is on the ramp above.

Well he did reference ESB and I don't think there was a lightsaber throw in there. I wish it would have shown Vader catching the lightsaber though the technology wasn't there and that discussion is for another forum.

I would think the lightsaber throw would be advantageous against battle droids but then again it would leave you open for attack.

I wish Obi-Wan would have tossed his saber down at Anakin in ROTS, its the least he could have done for the guy but alas... thats not how the story goes!

Well, we know that Kyle and Jaden are capable of it. Jaden is a mere Apprentice so we can assume most Jedi can do it.

Kyle and Jaden arent the only ones. Every Jedi/Sith in every Star Wars video game can throw their lightsaber. Bastilla, Revan, The Exile, Anakin, Obi-wan, Atton, The Handmaiden, Malek, etc. All of them can throw their lightsabers. Why dont Obi-wan and Anakin throw theirs in the movies? Cause they choose not to.

I guess I'll have to go with that explanation, I really wish they could have put it in there but ah well... the Yoda saber throwing is cool enough i guess.

Yeah, Yoda rocks! Maybe in the upcoming TV shows, there will be some saber throwing. If not, theres always Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy.

Although, according to my little brother (meaning I dont trust it), Obi-wan throws his saber in either AOTC or ROTS. Of course, this is most likely a screw up.

Well strictly speaking, Obi-Wan does throw his saber, but not in the attacking sense. He throws it to Anakin to fight Dooku, although that just seems to cause him to get his arm cut off...........

Honestly, I may be called a wee bit boinky with this, but...

Although I can't for the life of me find the DVD anymore, I'm quite sure that at one point on the Yoda/Dooku duel in AotC, the Count actually threw his saber, but it can barely be seen. If I recall correctly, at some point, Yoda starts hopping off the wall with the camera following his movements, and you can see Dooku's blade try to hit him. But the blade completely spins around, showing no one actually holding the handle, which could only really be seen well in a frame-by-frame analysis. I always thought that heer Dooku threw his saber there.

If someone can check this out, frame-by-frame if possible... well, I'd personally appreciate it.

oooh that sounds interesting though I believe Dooku just swipes at him.

Then again I haven't looked into it (frame by frame) so it could very well be possible.

Can someone check this out? I don't have the dvd here at work. :(

One other thing, If a jedi or sith threw his or her lightsaber and it was knocked away, that jedi or sith would be pretty defenseless, even in that split second it would take to pull it back.

    That can happen in JK2
You can lose your sabre temporarily, if someone else knocks it out of mid-air.
sometimes there is a glitch, and it doesn't come back. depending on who is around, you are probably screwed [face_praying] [face_laugh]

The power levels in the game are distorted anyway. How can a Jedi throw a sabre spinning through the air at someone 20 metres away, then pull it back to them instantly ("Luke in Hoth cave" style) - without actually appearing to be concentrating .
If you are powerful enough the sabre even chases the target for you [face_laugh]

I'm pretty much in the camp that throwing the lightsaber broaches on
aggression. Yoda was defending himself, so there is some grey area
there, but i don't think it's a good idea to teach younglings and
padawans to A) give in to their aggression and B)give up their weapon.

Ya know thats what I thought, it would seem quite aggressive though we see Yoda toss his. He and Obi-Wan also use the force throw (against Sidious and Grevous). Both these situations called for it but I do concur that this type of thing wouldn't be included in a younglings training.

Has anyone tracked down that Dooku footage? I haven't been able to play any video games, watch starwars or just do nothing at all with my new significant other. Must get rid of her!

Agreed. Along with a padawan throwing a lightsaber is almost like an invitation to any enemy to attack him or her.

Well whenever we see A Jedi use their lightsaber in the films its for close combat, duels, escape routes or reflecting blaster shots.

Jedi's have patience, they arent in a hurry to fight someone. If the oppent jumps away and awaits the Jedi's next move, the Jedi will probably stand and do the same, because Jedi's dont attack, they just defend.

Vader uses it in ROTJ because Luke jumps away, and he wants to demonstrate how powerful the darkside is. He also just wants to get Luke down in fighting range so he can attempt to bring out more anger.

lol Thats funny and it reminds me that I need to get glasses.

Is there any difference between the two DVDs themselves? I remember that scene, I swear tonight I'm going to sit down and watch the scene over and over again.. no distractions this time.

We had some really good responses and I couldn't agree more that throwing your lightsaber is touching the darkside, just like pushing with the force its walking a thin line because its supposed to be used only for defense.

But the word defense has so many connotations, the best defense is having a great offense sometimes especially as it pertains to dueling.

i.e. Kill them before they kill you
