It's Chatwin vs. Marsters in Dragon Ball Z

20th Century Fox has set Justin Chatwin (The Invisible, War of the Worlds) to play Goku and James Marsters ("Smallville," "Angel," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") as the villain Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z.

In the big screen adaptation, Goku is a powerful warrior who protects the Earth from an endless stream of rogues bent on dominating the universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name.

Actor/writer/director Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle) is producing. Final Destination helmer James Wong will direct from a script he wrote. Ben Ramsey wrote an earlier draft.

The story is based on Akira Toriyama's popular manga that has spawned graphic novels, a long-running TV series and more than 25 video games. The Jump Comics division of Tokyo-based Shueisha published the "Dragon Ball" manga.

With shooting scheduled to begin later this month, Fox will bow the sci-fi/adventure worldwide Aug. 15. Chatwin has already begun training with 87Eleven, the stunt performance company behind the action sequences in The Matrix, The Bourne Supremacy,Mr. & Mrs. Smith and 300.

It comes out August 15th, 2008. I'll be interested to see how this turns out. I like the TV series. Marsters as Piccolo is good casting.

Although I have no intention of paying to see or admitting I've seen the Dragon Ball Z movie, I did think Kung Fu Hustle was like a live action Japanese cartoon when we watched in film class a few weeks ago. I know the guy's not directing, but it still seems like a good idea for him to be on board.

Piccolo was a villian in the Dragon Ball series. This movie is about the Dragon Ball Z series. [face_talk_hand]

P.S. Stephen Chow? Awesome Sauce on a fantastic sandwich!

I hope they use a revolutionary style of mostly still shots.

This is the first in a projected series of 15 feature films, each to progress the same storyline slightly with a single 90min fight scene featuring appalling Engrish dialogue and several explosive bursts of mysterious energy that take 25min to "charge".

A video game on all next generation consoles, PSP and DS will accompany as well as a line of "Overly-Long Power Charge" action figures, which involve pressing a button on the figures back and a small globe in the fist glowing 25min later.

Piccolo was a villain in the beginning of the DBZ series. He became good after Vegeta showed up.

With Piccolo being the villian, this should be called Dragon Ball instead of Dragon Ball Z. Anyways, it should be interesting to see how it turns out. I wonder who they will get to play Krillin, Bulma, etc..

No, he still had bad motives after Raditz showed up. He was training Gohan for his own purposes (and to beat the Saiyans). Gohan was like his Sith apprentice.

Only after Vegeta Showed up was he a good guy.

Considering he never committed a villianous act in the entirety of DBZ, I think it's safe to assume that the first good thing he did, i.e. joining with Goku to defeat Raditz, was his first step to becoming a good guy.

And, going with your argument, he became "good" while training Gohan, which would still be before Vegeta showed up.

    Emmy Rossum Talks Dragonball Movie

Emmy Rossum (Poseidon, The Phantom of the Opera, The Day After Tomorrow) has posted a message about her filming and preparations for the Dragonball movie on her official MySpace page:

Sorry I've been rather quiet for a bit, I've been working on a very exciting new film that I'm shooting outside the US. I'm working with the great Chow Yun Fat and I'm very excited about the role, which is so different than any role I've ever played. I love the character and I'm excited to get to share something so fun with you. In prep for the film I've been training very hard, learning how to fight, fire a gun, weapons training and even some martial arts. It's fun to play such a different character when I am such a pacifist in real life.

Written and directed by James Wong, the big screen adaptation co-stars Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Jamie Chung, Eriko Tamura, Joon Park and Chow Yun-Fat. Fox will release the film on August 15.

Actually, he became Goku's uneasy ally when Raditz showed up. He trained Gohan for a year before Vegeta and Nappa arrived, and really showed good intentions during that fight when he gave his life to save Gohan.

He never did anything all that evil though. The elder Piccolo was the real villain.

This entire debate involving Piccodedo or whatever his name is, is completely Greek to me. No idea what's being talked about but it's entertaining to read.

You know if they downplay the ki attacks and simply stick to Dragonball it self (not Z) then I can see this movie working.

I'm just glad Vejita isn't in it. He's my favorite character from the series, and to see him butchered on the big screen would make me want to go Super Saiyan four on somebody.

I really, really, really hope this movie turns out crazy-good. But a big thumbs down for Emmy Rossum. Yuck.
