As the title says, I am looking for the opera type stuff you see in trailers and epic films. See, I know tons of them and would recognise them immediately if I heard them, but I dont know their names. So could you help me? They can be copy written or free use music, doesnt matter. Some examples I can think of that I know the titles of are Duel of the fates, The One Winged Angel (from FF7 adven children) and Navras (from the Matrix). As I said, they are in a bunch of commercials, like this one for Spiderman 2-

Anyway, I would really appreciate help. Thanks!

Everything sounds more important when set to O Fortuna.

There are a few songs from E.S. Posthumus that you'd like, specifically, "Tikal" and "Pompeii". "Ghost Love Score" by Nightwish is great too, for more tragic situations. "He's a Pirate" and "Skulls and Crossbones" from the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack is good swashbuckling fight music. "Burly Brawl" from Matrix Reloaded rocks.

And the song from Matrix Revolutions you're thinking of is actually "Neodammerung". "Navras" is a remix of it that's in the credits, and is more of a dance song than a fight song.

None of that is really operatic.

Anyway, most of E. S. Posthumous' stuff rocks pretty hard.

Not a lot of E.S. is really fight music, though.

Yet I couldn't tell you what it IS. It's just awesome.

Here, I have Unearthed next to me. I'll go song by song.

    1. Antissa - This song is just far too soft and there's no "thump" elements that a fighting song requires. The flute or whatever woodwind that is doesn't help much.

    2. Tikal - I maintain that this is great chase/fight music. It's got the beat, the tone, and the chorus flaming up at the end is a good transitional tool for people working it into a fight scene.

    3. Harappa - This begins as a good post-fight cliché sad music, and then turns into something that isn't quite strong or profound enough to be fight music.

    4. Ulaid - Good music for the summary of events at the end of the movie where everyone goes there seperate ways, a la LotR. Also invokes fond memories of Braveheart.

    5. Ebla - I'll give this one to you. It starts out with a "dead man walking" thing going on, and would work well as a last-ditch suicidal hold-the-fort sort of fight music.

    6. Nara - This is, in my opinion, the single best music for solemn credits one can use, but it's no fight music.

    7. Cuzco - Like Nara, this has a credits feeling going for it. Can't say why, though.

    8. Nineveh - Alright, this too is fight music. What kind of fight, I've got no idea. Maybe a chase scene. I like the violins in this.

    9. Lepcis Magna - Parts of the song are fight-worthy, and the other parts are buildup-to-fight music.

    10. Menouthis - Begins with an awesome "Oh snap, the bad guy just revealed himself!" and then turns into a rocking fight song, with a salsa element to it. Good for cinematic fencing.

    11. Extremoz - This has a great "Look at the damage being caused...in MONTAGE!" feel to it, like the end of The Two Towers or a montage of destruction in Armageddon.

    12. Pompeii - Definitely the best fight song on here, and the only one that can fit that true "epic" feel.

    13. Isfahan - A good way to end the album, with another "the characters go on their seperate ways" thing like Ulaid, but much more tragic feeling, a la the Grey Harbour (or whatever it's called) in RotK.

So I'll give you five and a half out of thirteen.

Look into music by these two companies:
    X-Ray Dog
    Immediate Music

They are companies that do music specifically for movie trailers. Probably half of the music you hear in movie trailers was done by X-Ray Dog (Narnia, LOTR, King Kong to name a few) You can't buy their music, they only send it to movie studios to use, then when the studio wants to use something they make a contract. But these two companies probably made the music you want. You might be able to find some of their tracks by looking around on the internet.

I like the Jurassic Park soundtrack as well as the music from The Lion King and Aladdin. They have some good tracks that could be used as fight music or trailer music.

Mulan probably has some good tracks too from the Mongol invasion.

    Opera? Opera!

Try Mussorsky's night on Black Mountain, Borodin's Polovetsian Dances, Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Scythian Suite.

O Fortuna as mentioned is from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. He also wrote Catulli Carmina, which is not often heard.

No, O Fortuna is Carl Orff. As for more amusing revelations for it, it was composed in the 1940's.

    Oops. I was wrong. 1930s.

Yeah, I went on a huge O Fortuna kick a while back...

Looking for nasty stuff, O Fortuna is very good. In general, anything from Carmina burana is very good, such as part II. In Taberna (In the Tavern). It goes major at one point though, so you might not want to use that, but it is very Operattic.

I must also correct someone that the Rite of Spring and other Stravinski work is Ballet. Still, If you're looking for a movie scoring sound that isn't acctually movie, Stravinski has a wonderful movement in "the Firebird" ballet that is included in the suite. It's called "Infernal Dance of Kashchei's Subjects," and is very in your face musically.

I don't know much about big choral works...But Carmina burana is a big one, I also found one from Nabucco, Act I called "Gli arredi festivi." Some parts are more bombastic at least.

sorry I can't offer more to you. If you want orchestral music that is minor and in your face, I've found a few, but its a lot harder to find than you might think.

Hi guys, thanks for all of the help. It is hard- I have been able to track down a couple of the songs you have suggested so far though (O Fortuna, and some others) I found the sites for those guys like X-Ray Dog-that is what I am looking for-too bad they dont have downloads of thier songs for trailers. If they exist, they are sure hard to find. Also that Unearthed CD is really good too. Again, unfortunately I cant find any of those songs either...looks like I need to stop hoarding my few quarters and by the CD afterall! Anyway, thanks!

Anybody ever hear of Apocolyptica? They do string versions of metal songs and some classical stuff too. On top of that, it's all overdriven, distorted strings. Totally killer. Their version of "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" is about as gnarly as string music gets.

I don't really know opera music. I was always more of a Foreigner guy myself...man, a fight set to "Double Vision" would kick @$$ with double the ampersand and 7.8 times the cash money symbols. I have no idea what I just said.

    Peace Out,

    Mark "The Admiral" Rosenthal

If you want to find X-Ray Dog music easier, here is a page that has the names of all the tracks from each of their CD's:

    http://www.gracenote.com/prof/music/search.html?q=X%2dRay+Dog&f=artist&&s=1&n=0&

If you want to know what song was played on what movie trailer, go to this site and look up the movie:

    http://www.soundtrack.net/trailers/

For instance, in the King Kong trailer, Dethroned by X-Ray Dog was used, so you might do a search on Google for Dethroned.
