Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone had, or knew where I could find the cymbals sound they often use in movie trailers to hide a cut. They either use that sound or a drum sound, which I already have. I tried everywhere and i just cant get the appropriate sound. (Yes, i even tried google) It sounds like the cymbals are played backwards but I tried that and I still can't get the right sound? Does anyone know the sound im talking about?

    Asked and answered, it seems

    ...no.

You can't hide the cuts some other way?

Do you have an example of some trailers? I don't know what you are talking about.

take the original sound you're trying to imitate, flip it backwards, and see what it sounds like.

Yeah. It's called a reverse cymbal. You can do it one of two ways.

    1. Apply a reverse-sound effect to a recording of a crash cymbal.

    2. Play a crash cymbal with padded mallets in a crecendo pattern.

Don't know why you want to use that to hide cuts though.

I appriciate the help but it doesnt sound right when I reverse the crash cymbal sound. It sounds like a backwards cymbol with a sudden cut.

An example I could think of that uses this sound is this trailer reedit of the shinning, im sure alot of you have seen it, it was a popular parody a couple months back.

    http://www.tatteredcoat.com/archives/2005/09/28/the-shining-redux/

Look a the scene where Jack is sitting on the bed and it dissolves to white, then to the car on the road, and its played again at the end when it cuts to the Title. Thats the sound im looking for, alot of people dont notice it, but it adds a very nice touch. Its a really generic sound that is used in a ton of movie trailers.

I know exactly what you're talking about; infact there must be a whole bundle of "movie trailer sounds" somewhere.

Single drum hits with big echoes, stylized wooshes...

Wish I could point some out to you, but I've never been able to find any except doing random searches on Sounddogs.com

From the sound of it, you wanna take a cymbal hit and reverse it. Now throw another one playing normally at the end of it, fade out of the normal one relatively quickly at the end, and throw a quick crossfade in there to hide the seam. Done.

    Lemme know how it sounds!

    two ways to do this....

one: crechendo cymbal roll with soft mallets

two: cymbal crash with a long reverse reverb to create the crechendo effect.

either will give you the effect, each with a slightly different "color"

1.) How do you pronounce "Cymbal"? Like... Schwarzenegger's last name in Kindergarten Cop?

2.) Why do you want to "hide" a cut with a "Cymbal" sound?

3.) You can usually SEE that a shot was cut by looking at the difference in camera position.

    Somebody explain please.

I think he's talking about an audio cut. A music change for instance from one extreme style to another. (Say, orchestra to rock)

It's an effect used by the News industry all the time too just as transition material. I don't really like it, but it works.

    1. "Sim-bull."

    2. I like how you tried to familiarize us with the way you'd pronounce it by comparing it to an obscure Schwarzenegger movie. Oh, Germans.
