For those you interested in Lucas's inspiration for midi-chlorians, here's an interesting program that discusses the biological basis for this concept: http://www.radiolab.org/story/cellm...&utm_campaign=daMost&utm_content=damostviewed

What is addressed on this program is an unlikely event that allowed multi-cellular life to develop after life had existed in a single-cellular form for over 2 billion years.

Though the subject matter may sound dry, as the program addresses a symbiotic relationship that occurred between 2 types of single-cellular organisms hundreds of millions of years ago, it's actually a fascinating account of what made the development of all plant and animal life possible.

I think this program gives some idea why Lucas finds the idea of midi-chlorians to be miraculous, as without the development of this symbiotic relationship, life, as we know it, could not exist. The program also discusses what is the true "spark of life," a concept Lucas embodied in the energy field of the Force and even in Anakin's rebirth as Vader in a Frankenstein's monster "It's alive" type moment.

I suggest anyone who has the time give the program a listen.

Midichlorians would've been a great idea...for Star Trek. I can see Data & Geordie standing around talking about cellular biology, & symbiotic relationships between microscopic organisms. For Star Wars...a very bad mistake IMO.

The portrayal of midi-chlorians is, to me, completely in line with the nature of Star Wars, since the focus is not on the "how", but on the "why".

I guess I never really understood the problem with Midichlorians. Unless everyone in the universe has some potential to use the force that only needs honed in someway, it seems obvious (to me anyway) that there must be something about that person to set them apart.

Ok b4 GL put that infamous hyphenated word in TPM. Was there ANYTHING that sed ANYBODY can become a Jedi in the EU?

Besides killing the mystery, a lot of people hate the MC's because now u have 2 have a certain amount of "Force Bacteria"

they never said that. they only said yoda had a lot and anakin had more than any other being. it's not about if you can use the force or not, it's about your potential. no one else had a midi count as high as yoda until anakin came along but that doesn't mean you become a jedi just because you have the abilities. many people can become amazing athletes but not automatically. some people have more natural ability than others but those people still have to train and learn and practice.

midis are only discussed so that people understand anakin was created by the force.

    Yes.

Y'know, I think the problem with midi-chlorians is that...people don't understand it? The criticisms are aimed at what people think the midi-chlorians are, not what they actually are.

Nope. Starting in 1977, Lucas stated in his guidelines for the EU regarding the Jedi and the Sith, that certain aliens are more in tune with the Force due to having different brain than most other species. In the mid 90's, though, Kevin J. Anderson put it into context when he introduced a device designed to detect the Force in people in his "Jedi Academy" Trilogy.

When Han and Wedge were scanned, they read as normal people. When Luke was scanned, the results revealed that he was strong with the Force and even that he was a Jedi. When Luke scanned his student Kyp Durron, the results were similar but the color of the results changed which indicated that he had the potential to fall to the dark side. Which he did. It is unclear if Anderson was aware of the possibility of Force detection that was going to come, or if he was just lucky as hell. Lucas, though had come up with the Midichlorians which was different, but it could determine how strong one could be. But not which way their path goes.

The Midichlorian count indicates if one has a strong enough connection to the Force. Qui-gon used it because of what Shmi Skywalker said about not having been impregnated by someone, which lead to Anakin's birth. A Midichlorian test is not always required for determining Force potential. Other tests are required, which is why the Council tested Anakin as they did.

Kanan also tested Ezra in a similar manner.

Ahhhh. Another fine example of GL not paying attention to the EU. If he red a few books I'm sure he'd gets less backlash with a "Force Detector" over "Force Bacteria"
