Has anyone ever noticed the change that Luke has after ESB? All through A New Hope, Luke calls him "Ben". I think this is because he sorta knew of, if not knew already, Ben Kenobi as this crazy old hermit out in the desert.

3-4 years later, in ESB, Luke still refers to Obi-Wan as "Ben". He says it on Hoth, he says it on Bespin, he says it on Dagobah.

However, after Vader's revelation to Luke about being Luke's father, Luke seems to have a different attitude toward Ben. No longer does he look to "Ben" for help, but after Yoda's death he hears "Ben"'s voice and says...."...Obi-Wan."

    Anyone else notice this?

I think he always used the name 'Ben' out of respect. When he was pissed, he said 'Obi-Wan.'

I noticed this myself years before the prequels. I always saw it as a rite of passage for Luke--like through his training he has learned to view Obi-Wan as his true self which is Obi-Wan, not Ben.

I think he knew him as the old hermet Ben that lived in the hills, but as Lukes powers grow in the force so grow his respect for the Jedi Obi Wan

Plus when Luke talked with Darth Vader (during fighting) Vader never called him Ben, when he told Luke he was his father after that Luke keep saying Obi Wan why didn't u tell me not Ben, but I do agree with
Why call him Ben the whole time and now call him Obi Wan

Well it does take time to get used to things. Like when a girl gets married and changes her last name. Or when the guy you always just called "Ben" turns out to have a screwed up name like "Obi-Wan."

And it's also a respect thing. By the time he's a full Jedi, he won't call him Ben.

He did refer to him as Ben later in the Dagobah conversation. "I can't do it, Ben"......"I can't kill my own father."

ben was his friend he never knew an obi wan. so when he called him obi wan it was realy out of disrespect. formality in anger sort of thing. like calling your friend paul smith mr. smith instead of paul.

Why did Obi-wan choose the name Ben anyways?

To hide his identity from the Darth Vader, The Emperor, and the Empire? Which is why he settled on the outskirts located, remote planet of Tatooine within the first place?

I think Luke skywalker kept on refering Obi-wan kenobi as "Ben" is because Luke has only known Obi-wan to be "Ben".

I see it as Luke called him Ben when he was nice, he liked Ben as he remembered him. When he got all pissed off about Ben lying to him, he calls him "Obi-Wan." If I'm correct that's the only time he calls him Obi-Wan in the entire trilogy.

Also note the tone of his voice, he clearly isn't pleased.

I think Luke did a lot of maturing and growing up after V. He does seem to have a better grasp of the Force in IV.

His Jedi skills are much better in IV. After all, he did construct a new lightsaber on his own. I wouldn't trust the Luke in V to do it.

The novelization of IV expands on Luke building his lightsaber in Obi-wan's cave on tatooine. So he did become more familiar with Obi-wan during that time.

Dang I never realized he had changed from Ben to Obi Wan. In ROTJ if he called him Obi Wan at the begining when he first appeared it does seem like he did it to show that he didnt really consider him such a friend anymore. Then at the end when he goes back to Ben he might have let the lies go and considered him a friend again.
