I wanted to creat this thread of Luke Skywalker now that the Saga is complete, for now.;) And this seems like a good place to talk about Luke skywalker and his story in the saga from ending of ROST to then ending of TROS. The story of Luke Skywalker, the son of a legend who was more or less space jesus. His mother was Queen and then a senator. He lived fpr almost 20 years as simple farm kid and got roped in this galactic civil war by this crazy old hermit named Ben. We learn he was once the legendary Obi wan kenobi and was jedi knight like his father. He gets in this conflict and sees his mentor vanish infront of him and thinks Darth Vader cut him down who he later finds out is his ver own father Anakin Skywalker. He taught of the ofrce and how to be a jedi knight by grand master Yoda, but Luke stuborn and arrogant and odn't listen to Yda, so he shows and slience him by scolding him. He later redeems his father by his love for him and Vader's love for his son. The Emperor was defeated and soon the mighty empire fell. Luke was visited by the spirits of his former master and his father while he went looking for jedi artifacts and later started trainning a new generation of the jedi knights. But even with them there he felt the burden of rebuilding the jedi order and chose to isolate himself and the jedi order witch might have been his first and one of greatest mistakes. He's got alot of guilt that he's covering up. He did rebuild it and maybe soon would set the jedi free to roam the galaxy and start expanding. But evil forces had taken hold of nephew in form of Snoke and Palpatine and trough him ended the new light in the galaxy and started a new empire in form of the first order. Luke blamed himself for his part in almost killing his prize student and the slaughter of the others. Until on day a young fore sensetive girl showed up named Rey. She began to spark some hope in him again as tought her of the force and jedi of past and their order, talks of him as being this larger then life then he's supposed to be. He dosen't come with her when sees he's nephew again as reflect on bad memories and his great error and mistake. Grand master Yoda later knocks some sense into him and talks of failure and that their stundents grow beyond their masters. Luke takes his old sage masters advice and shows the galaxy what a powerfull jedi knight can do in a non violant way being passive, he tricked his former student and distracted him so the resistance could live to fight another day. He later gives sage advice to his fomrer short student and gives her things she needs to get on her way to her destteny as a jedi. He lifts her up in the force with his father and the other jedi to fight and stand up againt the evil that has plagued the galaxy for too long. When Rey takes on the Skywalker name and it¨'s legacy Both Luke and Leia gives their belssing.

There's a few Qoutes from both Rian and Filoni about Luke's state of mind in the sequel trilogy.

So since no has commented yet here i go first. I love the idea of Luke with all the legend of him and he all going for him to rebuild the jedi order, he made one mistake and it was a costly one. He feared the return of a Vader-like figure and tought he could end but then realised his failure and mistake. Filoni compares him to Frodo Baggins and i love the idea of it, they both felt their burden of they journey's and decides they need to both leave everything behind. In GL drafts he was supposed to be this lone samurai waiting for a girl ho he train after he failed the others.

Could he be still deemed a legend had he not passed? Had they not killed him off would he be merely a hero of the Rebellion? It could be viewed that the much maligned Rian Johnson is responsible for elevating Luke’s status from heroic Jedi to Galactic Legend.

Personally I, like many others, was disappointed with Luke’s arc in the sequels. I would have loved to have seen him and the old gang back together kicking all kinds of ass. But it wasn’t to be, and if the trade off for that is Luke attaining legendary status in GFFA, then I can somewhat begrudgingly accept it. Luke deserves to be a legend. Sports stars aren’t legends until they retire, heroes aren’t legends until they die.

King Arthur rests on Avalon until Albion needs him again. Maybe Luke can rest within the Force until the Galaxy needs him again...

It's kinda ironic that Luke talks of being a legend, the one who redeemed Darth Vader and killed the emperor. He believed in his legend and reality came in and brought him down. Then he olny became a legend when he stood against the first order with lasersword. He did what Kenobi did on a grander scale and let the force take him, like when Kenobi and Yoda welcomed it and he became. the legend.

In my opinion, Luke's status as a legend only died in his mind when he felt he failed to live up to his status as a legend. While his popularity as a legend may have faded, his status never did. Luke's standing against the First Order with a lasersword brought his legendary status back to the forefront, but it had never been in doubt.

I'm sure Luke was a legend before he died. Remember the moment Rey met Han:

He's carrying a map to Luke Skywalker.
You are the Han Solo that fought with the Rebellion. You knew him.
Yeah, I knew him. I knew Luke.

    And later:

Ever since Luke disappeared, people have been looking for him.

There're a lot of rumors. Stories. The people who knew him the best think he went looking for the first Jedi temple.
    The Jedi were real?

Crazy thing is, it's true. The Force, the Jedi, all of it. It's all true.

All of those lines sound to me like Luke was already some kind of mythical folk hero.

Yeah to others he were but to himself, he was a failure as he failed his newphew and his other students, he failed master Yoda and the jedi order as whole in his eyes. But doing what he did on Crait cemented him futher as a legend in the eyes of all maybe even himself after he forgave himself.

In the book Bloodline (one of my favorites), it really delves into this whole idea that Luke became a legend in the time after the defeat of the Empire. So the way I see it is that Luke was a legend already before the events of the ST (in fact, who knows what feats he had accomplished during those decades!?), and perhaps the galaxy as a whole didn't really know where Luke went-therefore having no idea he had fallen into this pit of depression or whatever. Even Han said only those closest to him suspected where he went. So by the time the beings at large throughout the galaxy learn about Luke's deeds on Crait, they're not remembering the defeated Luke we saw in TLJ-they're remembering Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, the way the galaxy has always known him. To me, this makes his actions on Crait even MORE meaningful.

Look at the broom child scene in TLJ. Kids were playing with Luke Skywalker action figures and talking about his deeds. As Yoda would say, "Legend, Luke is".
